Why is there a procrastination as to the next Ryder Cup Captain?

All the reports indicate that Tiger will be the next Ryder Cup Captain if he wants it. Supposedly there are negotiations going on between his camp and the PGA of America. My question would be why? Does he want to be captain or not. Just make the decision to accept or let someone else do it who has a schedule that is quite not as busy.

Why is it so important that one is named now?  Still have a year and a half until the RC.

Tiger probably wants to evaluate if he has enough game left to play in the majors next year, and if so he wouldn't want the time commitment to be captain.

My guess is that it has to do with the PIF negotiations and the Tour/LIV split. Tiger, I think, wants some resolution of that before he commits to the captaincy, since he's on the Tour board. Bigger issue to him than who picks the Ryder squad.

Report just came across my computer indicating Tiger has refused to be the captain for 2025. I guess he could have told the PGA of America a bit back with this decision.

SI is reporting the Captain will be Keegan Bradley. If so, I love it. St. John's guy so local ties, he loves the Ryder Cup and he was terribly unfairly snubbed last year, so this reflects acknowledgement and making it up to him.

Personally I think Kuchar would be a great captain. His match play record at the Dell was amazing 35-8-5 and could give players who have struggled an advantage. To my knowledge he is well respected but far enough away from the clique’s to let nepotism drive picks.

I think Keegan is a great choice. He's an older, respected player, and doesn't fall into any of the 'boys club' groups like certain other players may have, so you'd expect to see his picks actually reflect the best players the USA can field

100% agree.  Its a little disappointing purely because i would love to see him play another one but he is an outstanding choice.

I think if he's in form by the time it rolls around, he could always be a playing captain. Not sure if the rules specifically exclude it, certainly was a thing in the earlier days of the Ryder Cup, and Tiger did it as the President's Cup captain in 2019

Nice to see a 38 year old with credibility who isn’t part of the old boys club. 
 

PGA of America did well by this one. Keegan will select a team based on merit.

Happy for Keegan. Lots of rave reviews about his drive and passion. Looks to be an upgrade over Zack Johnson and I’ve read he isn’t one for politics. He has “Just Win” mentality. Maybe that passion will wake up the US Team. Many of the old hands just aren’t getting it done.

I'm surprised Tiger turned it down and would like to hear from him why he did.  I also think Keegan is a great choice and suspect we'll see a whole new cadre of vice-captain selections.

I think Keegan will be great. He's got a fire and a passion, and clearly loves the Ryder Cup. Plus probably knows Bethpage Black better than just about anyone, and will do whatever it takes to win.

I wonder if we'll ever get to see Phil Mickelson as a RC Captain...

He is certainly competitive, high-spirited and has his own ideas.

It would be interesting to see if he unites the troops or divides them.

I guess it's a moot point for at least the next two years.

Totally agree with this take. I also believe he will take the 12 best players the US can field and not play favorites as it seemed ZJ did. Building a group that meshes well is important, but you cannot leave guys home that are flat out better players. Full Swing magnified every move ZJ made by 100, but he really did make an a** of himself, or at least they portrayed it so. 

One thing is for sure, I am fired up for 2025!

I love that he said this at his press conference.  The 12 best players, period.  

Cannot wait…maybe I can talk my wife into a NYC trip where dad takes the train east to Farmingdale for a couple hours

Rooting for Keegan to make the team through the points scale they have in place. I don't know of any other captains who have also played. I think Tiger turned it down because typically captains are retired players and Tiger doesn't want to admit he is done playing...competitively. When the whistling straits Ryder cup was going on, I submitted to be a volunteer for the Bethpage black ryder cup.

As the Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America and if Phil hasn't burned all bridges with them, then I would say never say never. I would love to see Bradley pick Phil as a Vice Captain especially if he is true to his word about picking the twelve best players and that includes a couple LIV players.
