Your Brand Opinion: PXG Golf

Recommended Posts

We are going to start a little series of these to get your takes on different brands. Good, bad, great or ugly - we want to know your take on the featured brand.

PXG golf has obviously been a bit polarizing over the years, but they make a good or even great product. So what is your take? Does the marketing cloud judgement on performance or are you able to separate the two?

The marketing is something else that is for sure.  I am not the intended audience for their product.  If I say my real thoughts I’ll probably get cancelled.  They no doubt make some quality products, but that is all I have to say about the brand.

I currently am playing PXG Gen 6 irons and really enjoy them. When I was considering new irons it was between the Gen 6’s and Titleist T350’s, but it was the fitting experience that swayed me to the PXG. Both sets were priced basically the same, so that did not come into play. My fitting experience for the T350’s was at a “big box” golf store and was lousy, the PXG experience was special.

PXG has always been an intriguing brand for me. The logo and marketing is a bit loud, but I also appreciate that. I have found solid performance out of their clubs and used them with great success. I love the way the company has evolved over time and adapted to a larger market. Their story and progress for me has been fascinating.

Of course their involvement with the Forum has increased my respect and knowledge of the brand. They are extremely responsive, very easy to work with and from our experience with the testers make sure the PXG experience is as good as the product. This has been something that has stood out to me and is greatly appreciated!

I said in my intro that I had always seen PXG as high priced and loud.  They are no longer the highest priced, still loud but not the most expensive. I do really appreciate what they do for our military and first responders and wish more companies would do the same. They deserve it!

I can say, going thru the testing for the Gen 7 irons, PXG has blown me out of the water. From day one, the communication, fitting and performance of their irons has been amazing. They pushed the limits!

They are also doing a fitting special.

PXG has always come across as a very loud, expensive, and “in your face” brand to me which is not my style. I never cared for the look of their irons and nowhere near me has them so I’ve never had an opportunity to try them. PXG did get onto my curiosity radar what their prices had a huge drop a while back but alas, I have not had an opportunity arise to try any.

I'm a big PXG fan.  They dominate my bag, from my 611 driver (amazing results!) to my 5- and 6-hybrids (311 XF's), followed by my PXG 311 XP 7-PW, and my Sugar Daddy II 50*, 56* and 60*.  I was fit for the driver and irons, and highly recommend going that route.

While I've recently replaced my PXG 4-hybrid with a Ping G430 SFT 7-wood, I passed it along to a retired military playing partner, who was playing with 20 year old clubs, and I don't think I could pry from his bag if I tried!

My only regret is buying a new(non-PXG) putter two months before the new PXG Allen putter was released.  That one looks sweet, but I don't think I could convince my wife that it's already time for a change.
Since being fit for my driver and irons, I've had my first (and only, so far) sub-72 rounds.  I'm 68 and the improvement is amazing.  Yes, I'm sold on PXG.

PXG is an easy target for criticism.

I like how they’ve positioned themselves in the market.  You have to stand out in a crowded field and they do.  It’s not for me but it’s definitely for someone else and they’ve found their someone else.

At first, I did feel they were WAY too pricey for my taste. As the times changed, the rest of the market has increased their pricing and PXG has stayed high in some aspects (Sugar Daddy series) but still offers a pretty solid alternative in a much more palatable and competitive price range. Over time, I really dug into their story and was excited to finally stop by and give the Gen 4 driver fitting a shot. The experience was amazing in getting fit for a driver and hybrids, then add in the heroes pricing and you have a winner in my book.

What I have appreciated over the last few generations to now is their no apologies approach to trying something new and innovative. They got flak for lower lofts, for injected faces, for busy aesthetics, for loud campaigns. Yet, here they still stand holding their own and continuously iterating on the prior generations bringing something new and fresh to the market. Overall, their clubs perform rather well and offer quite the assortment of themed accessories and still too pricey attire. Did I mention they even do putters? Now going after a segment no one else has tried other than LAB in balancing the club for the swing path. You can go to PXG and walk out with an entire bag of clubs from putter to driver, a pretty fancy bag, towel, hat, windbreaker, balls, alignment sticks, glove, and markers, all branded in PXG. All they need are the shoes and you can be completely decked out in PXG, just as loud and in your face as the brand wants to be.

On my second set of PXG clubs.  After the customer service and fitting for my Gen 3 set of Driver, 5 & 7 woods, 4-PW, GW, 54 & 58 degree wedges and putter I was sold on PXG - great experience.  Playing my PXG's resulted in my first hole in one!  I was just recently fitted and received a full bag deal on the new Gen 7's,  This time I went Black Ops Driver, 4 & 7 woods, with the Sugar Daddy wedges (50,54 &58 degree) and the new Allen putter, which were included!  These clubs are second to none. Bob Parson's story and his military and first responders support only enhances the brand.  PXG is my brand.

As previously stated by @Mac attack, their personalized service and fitting process swayed me to be a big PXG fan and drink the PXG Kool-Aid!

My entry into the PXG family started by buying used PXG irons and woods from eBay.  They performed for me, so this year I decided to go through the fitting process for Gen7 irons and Black Ops woods.  It was one of the best fittings I have ever been through.

The fitter at PXG in Atlanta took the time not only to try different iron models (Gen7 & Black Ops) with different shaft options and lengths but actually bent the lofts and and lie angle right there.  No lie board or guesswork.  Everything was backed up by results from a Trackman launch monitor.

PXG is very innovative and not afraid of pushing the envelope.  Bob Parsons is the Eli Callaway of this decade.

a. Iron specs (flex, length/lie). Regular graphite shafts, +1" in length & 2* Upright

b. Driver specs (loft/flex). PXG Gen 6 10.5*

c. Dexterity (right or left-handed). Right handed

d. Where You Live Jefferson, GA

e. Your handicap or average 18 hole score. 18.6 index

f. Putter - Too many to list! But all are fitted with FlatCat grip.

You can always say that for good or bad, everyone into golf is very aware of PXG, and as a non-established start up, that’s what they really needed to do. To make golfers aware of their products and technology so they could become legitimized with the other equipment manufacturers/sellers. They were not infomercial clubs and their advertisements let you know they had a different mission from the beginning.

I’d say they succeeded because they’ve gained market share and can’t be cast off as a player in the equipment space.

From a personal standpoint, I snagged a Gen 4 XF driver for my wife when they were very discounted because the specs matched well for her swing speed and needs and it performed well for her. I just ordered it off their site and it was at the house in 3 days. I’d consider their clubs for my own use, but the closest PXG fitting location is Houston (3.5 hours) and they are not a fitting option at all retail locations near me.

Currently in the bag:

They have a few locations in San Antonio for fittings  (Based on your profile location).  I don't have any "official" stores in Austin either but my fitter does 3 different locations around town and 1 was outdoors and 2 indoors.  Have done both types and the service was amazing.   With the fitting special it may be worth the short drive to SA.

I have been to PXG HQ in Scottsdale for a fitting and I will say they are very professional .  While I did not purchase their clubs I felt that they were excellent products .  I believe they do confuse consumers with the labeling of their irons .  I am not a huge fan of the screws but they do not come into view at address. I understand that they use them for fitting so it makes sense .  It seems that their pricing is more competitive these days .  I may revisit them again in a year or so .  I really like my new Wilson Dyna Forged irons so I will not be changing for a while.

I agree that they make great products. It's not for everyone, but then again neither are the other OEM's and DTC's.

I've learned to just let the marketing stuff flow over me and for the most part ignore it. Some of them have been humorous in the past, but it hasn't altered my opinion of PXG. Bob's a character and it just fits his personality.

I wouldn't think twice about looking at PXG these days. 0211, Black Ops, Gen X, SD/Forged wedges, etc, etc. They make quality products, have an incredible fitting experience, and their CS is excellent (almost, but not quite Sub70 excellent). People have had a hard time getting past what PXG was early on, but that's their mistake now.

I'm also a huge fan of what they do for the military, first responders, and other "heroes" with the discount and other off the course stuff they do. I really don't know any other brand who does what PXG does for heroes.

PXG is who they are as a brand, if it jives with you, it jives. If it doesn't, there's likely not anything that changes that for you.

As far as the product, they make a solid golf club. I am intrigued by them for newer stuff, although they may not be the first choice at times.

I love PXG. When I was getting into golf, I stopped at our local store because it was less than 1/2 mile from Golf Galaxy. I had never hit anything other than PING at that point. PXG let me hit their Gen 6's and they felt great. So, I asked the woman working there, why should I choose PXG over any other company? Her response was 'Because we are right here if you need anything. You can buy from big box stores or whatever, but once you pay that it.' A month later I went for a fitting and bought some clubs. A month after that, the clubs went on sale. So, I contacted PXG asking if I could be reimbursed or something having recently purchasing clubs. They didn't give me money back, but they gave me store credit equal to the difference. A year later, I was looking at new clubs because PXG wasn't performing how I had hoped. So, I started trying other clubs and was considering New Level irons. I ended up going back to PXG and speaking with them about the issues I had with my clubs. We scheduled a complimentary spec check and got the clubs performing to my expectations. Additionally, they gave me a free box of their new balls.

Long story short. I have had great customer service experiences with PXG and for that, they have earned my loyalty and money.

PXG has never really moved the needle for me…still think of them as an expensive brand even though I know that isn’t the case.

I know many that swear by their clubs and the fitting process.

I also couldn’t stand the look of the irons with all of the screws in the back…just a visual thing for me.

I did one of there free fittings and enjoyed it. It was quite educational. When I was done they had me in their clubs from Putter to Driver and bag for $7k. I would say a bit expensive. But my numbers on the trackman were better.

My initial take was that Dr. Parsons was a bit brash and pushed the limits with his marketing. But over time they products caught up with the hype. They were certainly out of my price range but when he created the For Heroes program the equipment became obtainable for me. I have owned several PXG clubs. I currently game a Black Ops Driver, 0311XF Gen 5 3-wood and an 0211 19* hybrid. I did have 0211 irons but those were replaced by the Paradym X irons I tested for the forum. I had a great fitting experience for my driver earlier this year. I am hitting my driver better than I ever have. I am very happy with my PXG clubs. On a none golf related note I’m very impressed with the philanthropy shown by Bob and Renee Parsons. Especially towards the veteran community.

I currently game Gen 6 combo set.  The fitting experience moved me from Mizuno.  Great experience and follow up.  Free lie and loft check 1 year after, second to none customer service and experience. That's saying something this day and age. The PX long irons are solid and explosive.   The P scoring irons deliver accurate high launch with excellent performance.   I'm sold, marketing or not these bad boys get the job done!

For the most part, I avoid brands that I see too much marketing from. For example- the fruitphone brand. I feel like products from brands that market too much are more expensive simply because they are paying for commercials. I often find better products that are cheaper. I don't go too cheap, though, because I feel that there can be a significant difference in quality. It's a constant balancing act. PXG? Their products are expensive. That's part of the reason that I was so intrigued by the chance of testing the Allan. It was a chance for me to try something that I would never buy simply due to price. Then I can see for myself if PXG is more than just hype and marketing.

I have only ever hit a PXG Driver from a buddies bag and it wasn’t very impressive. The feel and sound off of the face was different. Though, this was one of their earlier models, the new ones could be better than that.

There is a running joke about PXG, but I do believe that there is probably more to the company than other people think. I’m sure that they have some quality to them if players are winning on tour with them like Jake Knapp.

Watch for fitting specials (I paid $7.50) and prior year model sales, you won't be disappointed. I had no intention of buying but the feel and performance blew me away.

I switched to PXG after an enlightening fitting experience. It’s more than the usual, pick from 2 shafts and change the lie, that you get from other brands. They customize the head, shaft, length, grip etc. It’s truly fitted for you and it got me 10 yards on every club. As I got older I wanted to get some distance back. The clubs are nice looking. The downside is their swag, like bags etc to match your clubs, are over priced.
