On a more serious note, and I don't want to step on any toes as far as other countries' customs, but though I haven't had a boss in a long time, I never bought a boss a gift. #1, bosses Hopefuly make more than their underlings, and if anything the boss should buy a gift for their underlings, because it is the because of those underlings and their performance that that boss has a job.

I buy my underlings a gift, and I tell them, and I'm dead-ass serious, do not buy me anything. Now, my asst, having a streak in her similar to mine, in that she'd rather beg forgiveness(which neither one of us ever dies..LOL) than ask permission, buys me a dozen balls for Christmas, though with the Christmas bonus that I give her, that's ok.

But I would say a nice card would suffice. The other thing is do you have co-workers? That might put pressure on them to buy him/her a gift also, and the fear that not doing so might hurt their career.

This is just me, and Brad, I don't mean this towards you, but as I worked for Fortune 500 companies(Actually, they were fortune 10..LOL) and we never did that. If someone did that, I'd look at him/her as a kiss-ass. My gifts to my bosses was my performance. I put a lot if jingle in their pockets. They should been byin me gifts..LOL

After the whole Yeti incident she should get a very nice bonus!

I was thinking the same thing re the kiss-ass thing, and I certainly take no offence to you sayin' it. We are a small specialised team (three of us) and have a far more collegial relationship than boss-underling. I guess it's not a typical hierarchical relationship so it is certainly not the norm.

I guess I was more asking about the etiquette in the States as that's where the e-newsletter originated from and wanted to get a grip on whether it was just a marketing ploy or something that people would actually consider doing (buying a putter for their boss).

I used to have a partner that golfed & I did buy him a Scotty one year because he actually played outa a nice club(just joined) and his wife bought him one of those Cally starter sets(I think it was a War Bird, if that sounds right) and he had this horrid, driving range type putter & I was like, "Dude, the clubs are one thing(They actually looked ok for his level) but ya can't show up at your club with that putter.LOL he proceeded to lose the head cover(someone probably stole it..LOL) during his first round. And someone in his foursome commented that his putter was nicer than the other 13 clubs. LOL

My dad & his partner exchanged gifts, and it was funny cuz they both play outa the same club(me too) and a few years they were in the pro shop at the same time buyin each other gifts(sweaters, wind shirts, balls, etc) ..LOL

But I've never really heard of an underling buyin a boss a gift.

Well, Tis' the season to get coerced (read: screwed over) by marketing tactics, so it looks like that's probably what this is. ;)

Heh. Just something I've never actually seen happen anywhere I've been so it sort of boggles my mind when people not only get them, but plan on getting them.

On a side note, has anyone ever done any Business Intelligence analytics courses and found them useful? One of the things that I find, whether working directly for or as a consultant is the requirement to change the message about IT to get people to understand it's purpose. Given that almost everything I purpose is speficially for business cases, I keep wondering if having that sort of background, or ability to gather and mine those types of numbers would be useful.

I was speaking of the absolute repulsiveness of a holiday that now begins two months, TWO MONTHS, before that day.

That too.

Aside from everyone driving like a Dickensien lately we've added a new layer of Xmas fun with the minion. We now have family members fighting about how gets to buy her what. Seriously. Two of them started screeching like a scalded racoon. Had they been in the same room I don't doubt there would have been hair pulling.

It's appalling and it's not improving my theory about the holidays and people's general attitude.

Oh yea, the other twist to my bonus model is that the consultant's are responsible for the client making the appropriate payment in a timely manner. I don't have a billing department or Accounts Recievable Department.

Fascinating.

I've seen other places try that but never one that actually made it work.

I've got a question that needs answering: What's the etiquette around buying a Christmas gift for your boss? I've done it a couple of times but its usually something small. The reason I ask is I got a golfing e-newsletter this morning suggesting that one of these puppies would be a good gift for me to buy my boss:

untitled.JPG

I'm thinkin' that buying the boss a putter is a bit extreme, and I'm also thinkin' that if I did buy one of these (Musty Putter) then its highly unlikely it would leave my possession ;)

What's the go though - do you guys buy your boss a gift for Christmas?

I could so see buying one of these for my boss. Of course, the fact that I am self-employed has a lot to do with it. I never bought my boss a gift. I figured he already knew what I made. If I got him something expensive then he thinks he paying me too much. If I got him something cheap, he thinks I am a cheap b@tard and he is paying me too much. So you were damned if you do and damned if you don't.

My role is in a govt health department, and there is no such thing as a bonus - aside from having a job ;) We do get remunerated better than some other public service organisations, but that is commensurate with the responsibility I guess.

I've only been in one role where we had bonuses, so I've never been in a position to miss them...that said, if someone wanted to surprise me with one then it's unlikely that I would refuse it... ;)

1. Christmas presents for boss nothing bigger than chocolates or yer kinda sucking up. now in Nidine's situation she's close/buddies with her boss guessing like RP's assistant. In that case little more personal is ok bottle of scotch etc.

2. First year in a while no Christmas bonus. Parent company is claiming not big enough earnings across the board. However I did get 11 weeks vacay this year so I'm not complaining. I also got some large account bonuses for OT worked so it makes up for things.

NYC is great. Did the Museum of Natural History today and it was pretty impressive. I gotta dump the converse because my legs are killing me. we walked the 40 blocks there and back plus did times square and Macy's again. Nidine did all this in wedge boots and she had to by flats halfway through. Our poor feet and I thought we were golfers....

Didn't do steaks, we had to eat sooner and went to an Irish Pub. One of the best burgers I've ever had.

11 Weeks Vacation?!?!?!!! How long have you been there, 93 freaking years? Holy smokes. Not that I can complain, I have worked about 11 weeks this year, but even when I had a real job where I had to be some where everyday, I did not use all of my vacation. I used to joke that when you were gone there was no one there to cover your butt if something came up you were supposed to do.

I work for a digital agency:

www.blastradius.com

I get 3 weeks vacay. This year was my 4th year and after the third & every 3 there after we're entitled to a month sabbatical as well. So that's 7 weeks. On top of it, one of my accounts requires me to be on call every Sunday for possible website updates. I get a half day lieu for being on call and a full day if i touch a computer. So all in all this added up to just under 11 weeks. I promise you next year this won't be happening.

We've totally forgotten what's important. And we have no one to blame but ourselves. I believe that this is a societal thing, and it runs much deeper than a Holiday or Holiday season.

About 15-18 years ago, my sister who had 3 daughters had a little girl come over to spend the night as often happens 10 year olds. Then this girl asked to spend the next night. Still not too unusual, so she told her to call home and ask her mother. She gets on the phone and finds out all is ok. Then she asks to spend Sunday night. She says to ask her mother. She gets on the phone and my sister took the phone from her. It turns out she was calling time and temperature. After doing some digging, my sister finds out that this little 10 year old's mother had been in jail for 3 months and her father was also gone to the big house. This girl was living in a shed, getting food at school and showering at school during the week and going home with different girls on the weekend and getting her clothes washed. Throughout this time, she did not miss one day of school.

My sister was pissed that her mother would do that to her. She ended up going and getting custody of her, keeping her mother away because her mother only wanted her because she got more welfare. The all happened a few weeks before Christmas. They asked her what she wanted for Christmas. She said her own sheets. She had never slept in a bed with her own sheets. Wow, that still moves me.

They went that night and bought her new sheets of her choice. It is now all these years later, this girl, now woman, has graduated from college, has three children of her own, and was recognized by Lowe's Improvement Center as the best teacher in her school system earlier this semester. She thanked her mother and father for her award, my sister and brother-in-law.

Wow. I cannot imagine. What an experience! When my son complains if he doesn't get something he wants I try to remind him he has so much more than so many kids. Like that song says. "It's not getting what you want. It's wanting what you've got!"

That's one thing when you're talking about things. Another thing entirely when you're talking about the people in your life. So easy to take it all for granted.

But, those guys are a dime a dozen, no offense intended. The guys that I need can go toe to toe with a CEO, then leave his office and walk down the hall & take over a board meeting.

Currently my bread and butter. Love that aspect of my job more then anything to be honest. They're about the only people who I can loosely talk tech but the business case behind the tech and nod their heads. It's rewarding.

As to your other post about Xmas and the gifts, 100% agree. And the thought of the person "winning" and being happy about it? Ick.

Mornin Gentlemen. Question: Getting up for my 3:30 bathroom run, I forgot that I fell asleep with my phone on my chest, so when I stood up, it goes face(screen) first onto floor & you can guess what the cracked screen looks like.

Can I get the screen repaired or am I screwed to either live with it or replace phone?

Thanx much

Fairways & Greens 4ever

You can have it repaired. I have heard of people doing it anywhere from $15 to $95 and last week while Christmas Shopping I saw a place in the mall called iPhone Repair. I am not sure what they do but if I were to guess...

You can also visit the Apple Genius Bar. and even order the screen on eBay and fix it yourself. I do not recommend that you do it yourself. With you computer skills you may end up installing two screens.

But with all things, Google it. "Broken iPhone Screen" and find your options.

My kids routinely bust the screens on their phones. They can get repaired - it ain't cheap, though. Depending on where you are with your contract, it may be less expensive to upgrade. My son has also purchased replacement phones inexpensively at Pawn America.

Inspiring story Rick! These are the things that will have a ripple affect far, far down the road. This woman's grand-children will help other people, just as your sister did. As they say, a rising ride lifts all boats.

Rick, thanks for posting this. It's stories like these that put life in perspective, and remind us to appreciate what we have and to be a good person. Your sister and brother-in-law are saints.

Back when I was in 7th grade, my mom took on one of my brother's friends who had been abandoned by his parents. Unfortunately, the story did not end nearly as well and he eventually had to leave. I won't go into details, but the point is that what your sister and brother-in-law did was far more difficult than anyone can imagine without having been there. As I said, they are saints.

IMO bring it into the Apple store. The glass is very specialized. I wouldn't bring it to a third party.

Alternatively, if you've had it for 2.5 years, your battery is probably hurting and you're due for a new customer phone deal. Upgrading won't be drastically more expensive than replacing the glass, especially if you factor in the cost of replacing the battery.
