How to remove old epoxy from shaft

Recommended Posts

Im thinking of taking my current set and adding tip weights instead of having the lead tape on them and was wondering how to remove the old epoxy from the shafts?

A couple of options...

- heat it up and use a pick to clean it out.

- Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the inside diameter

- Get a shaft cleaning brush from someplace like golfworks

Personally I use a combination of the first two. I just take a drill bit and drill out the inside if there is a solid plug. Then use a metal pick to get any other big chunks. If there are a few little bits still stuck to the side I wouldn't worry too much. Just heat up the shaft a little bit before putting the tip weight in and it should re-adhere to the sides of the shaft so you don't get a rattle.

Thanks guys. I figured a drill would work but wanted to make sure. I'm worried about heating them cause of the paint that they are coated in

Remove the epoxy from the shafts, or from the hozels? Wasn't sure from the OP.

Shafts: Lightly scrape the old epoxy or sand w/fine grit sandpaper. Take care to not get through the coating into the fibers.

Hozels: Graphite or steel shafts? If graphite, you really should use a shaft puller. You don't need to use one with steel, but it wouldn't hurt. Drill and/or hozel brush should be fine.

Golfworks sells an epoxy solvent (take care on painted surfaces):

They also sell hozel cleaning brushes (which could be used along with the solvent, or by themselves):

The last one looks like a plumber's brush that you could find at Lowes, etc. that might work as well.

I forgot you had the super sweet blue shafts on your irons (which I'm extremely jealous of by the way).

Yeah, I'd be careful with too much heat on those, stick with the heat gun rather than the torch and you should be ok. Then use the drill bit and metal pick to get out the big stuff. Just make sure you use a slow speed on the drill bit and don't wiggle it around too much.

Theoo, whether they are graphite or steel, just use your hair dryer.

It's much safer than a heat gun and they'll still melt out pretty nicely.

Apply for just seconds, and use tooth pick to feel the hardness.

Ya....just drill it. You don't have to make the inside shiny clean or anything.
