I looked up pictures of the Wilsons... And WOW! 

 

What a fantastic looking set of sticks! Although I have to say, I have never seen a golf club as pulled together as these Hogans! With the black/red ferrule, black/red lettering on the club head, black/red grips on the clubs (NDMC on my set). These are just SO well tied together!

 

Still. Wilson Tour 100's... Wowza!

So for the guys waiting to see what we have come up with, something we are going to do is give everyone here a little snapshot of our thought process in the pre-review time. Basically an update of what's fresh on our mind when we start to attack our review.

 

I've been spending a ton of time over the weekend and through today trying to think about that. I want to give everyone some nice, enticing insight, but my head is still processing everything with these irons.

 

So instead of giving you a quote straight out of my review, I'm going to give everyone some straight truths that I've noticed and that are playing a huge role in me forming my opinion on these irons.

 

So here we go...

 

First? These irons are different. Man are they different. I sell Toyota cars for a living, and if any of you have ever made the switch from a domestic (for those of us in the US) to an foreign car, do you remember having to relearn something as simple as turning on and off the headlights, activating cruise control and using the windshield wipers? It's amazing how many people I have to teach those basics to.

 

And it's eye opening. Because playing these irons is kind of like that. Things are different. And that's a beautiful, yet frustrating thing to deal with.

 

Second? A legacy. I can't put enough emphasis on how important this is with these clubs. I use SOO many different products on a daily basis. From deodorant and shampoo, to a certain kind of pen, cars, notebooks, foods, instruments, shoes, bags, clothes, phones, computers and so much more.

 

But through all of that (and I'm an avid consumer of products, I know, I'm a materialist.) I can't think of a SINGLE thing that I've encountered through all of those products that feels so... important to someone. These irons sitting in the trunk of my car   (don't anyone get any ideas now) have a man's name on them. Sadly he has passed on, but these clubs are important to people. 

 

I promise you will see more on this in the review...

 

and finally the last thing swirling in my mind as I dive into this review headfirst, is how is the Hogan brand positioned to weather the landscape of the golf future? Does the product deliver on that idea, and are these irons a proof of concept on what Terry Koehler is selling to us all?

I've been trying to get out on the course as much as possible so I get a subjective/objective reviews of the Ben Hogan irons/wedges.  Here's a little snippet of my review...the rest to come next week!

 

"My preconceived notions of the brand were that they would come out with a very high quality product that would stay true to the Hogan roots.  Like almost all of the other Ben Hogan irons, I thought they would look amazing.  I expected a classic look/design with a hint of modern technology.  I must say they definitely delivered on all fronts."

Yes, they are songs from the movie.  If you haven't seen it, you are too young.

 

I would suggest you find an old movie house that's showing it around Halloween.  Be warned though, that it does get messy inside during the show.  Wear something appropriate!!
