I always look forward to hunting season because the course clears out a lot on weekends. If I my make a commentary on deer hunting. ... I don't have anything against hunting or guns. I don't hunt but I own several guns and lot's of ammo. What I just don't get is the way deer hunting is undertaken these days. (at least here in my neck of the woods.) Guys don't really hunt. They put out feeders (bait), hide in a blind, and then wait for the deer to walk up and blast them. How exactly is target practice like this on live animals considered hunting? Ok, let me have it. I'll go back to golf.

One of my golf buddies just returned from a week in Ohio where he killed 5 deer.......using the same "skill" that you described, bait & blind.   The only thing they conquered is their ability to withstand the colder temps.

I'm not a vegan so I've got nothing to say about people who actually eat what they shoot.

It's just not for me.

I've got a Ruger M44 carbine, a single shot bolt action .220 Swift (Remington 40XB action on a fancy Herter's Catalog  stock), and a Browning Medalist target pistol.   Bought them all decades ago as a kid.  Don't remember the last time they've been out of their cases.

Never shot a living creature, though.

I live in Ohio. Most of my buddies are hunters. I am not.... I hate cold weather! Anyway, baiting is only legal on private land in Ohio. Salt licks are legal anywhere. As far as I know, Tree stands and blinds have always been the method for deer hunting in Ohio. I know that sometimes a group of hunters get together and push/funnel deer toward a certain area where other hunters are waiting. My hunter buddies said that it is almost impossible to stalk a deer on foot because their hearing and sense of awareness is just to keen.

I love hunting season because it is started off with THE Social Event of the Season. Beer Camp.

30 years ago, we gathered together the Friday Night and "Deer Season" would open the next morning. Guys were there to prepare the camp for the season, and lots of drinking and eating and partying. To the point that it was probably not smart to have loaded firearms the next morning.

So 20 years ago, the event was changed to "Beer Camp." This takes place the Thursday Night before Opening Saturday, which is normally two days after election day. The event has become huge. Local politicians are usually there, even had a US Senator before. A wild hog is shot and BBQed. Dove and quail are prepared, venison chili from last year is cooked. Cases of beer and whiskey and a good time is had by all. Last year there was close to 100 guys there, but this year the weather kept it to about 40-50 guys.  Oh yeah, no women allowed, and I doubt any would want to be there.

I have not actually hunted in a long time, but Beer Camp is a must.

I grew up hunting deer, turkey and bear but have not been in the woods for well over 15 years at this point.  Last year I hunted with my grandpop he got an 8 pointer and I got a nice size 7 pointer.  Miss the fun of going away for a week in the woods, but not so much the hunting part.  I am more of an indoor target shooting guy these days.
