  1. BIG STU

    Random Thread

I may have told this before but it is funny A friend of mine about 15 years ago now got paired up with this nice couple from Canada down here for the winter. He was a retired RCMP Police Officer and she a retired school teacher. If you looked up retired school teacher her picture would be beside it. She had some new orange Top Flite golf balls. One of the par 3s have some houses beside it and one guy was working in his yard. She hit her ball in the yard. She went to the fence and asked the man if she could have her orange golf ball back? He told her no that tough luck it was on his property it was his now. She said ok and walked back to the cart. She proceeded to pull another Orange Top Flite from the sleeve and proceed back to the guy in his yard. She hollered at him here and threw the new ball at the guy. He said WTH? She replied not cracking a smile " Any one who is as big of a prick as you are needs 2 balls." Me and my bud about fell off the cart laughing. Her husband told us that guy ought not to have gotten her started.

    Making my own putter

How does my toe hang look? 1st pic is with 2 x 6g weights. 2nd is 1 x 6g heel, 1 x 2g in toe. Approx 35° and 27°. Wouldn't think 4g could make so much difference Shaft just arrived so had to do a quick check as I had no idea what I would get... Big sigh of relief that it's not rubbish. Off the the pro shop to get it finished off..

I'd trade my HIO for your index/ability/consistency in a nanosecond. I'm honestly just stoked that I had witnesses, even cooler that the group ahead of us waved us on. I always had a fear that I'd make one playing solo, or that I'd just never make one, but I had come to peace with that idea. I would love to consistently threaten shooting par, and even break par on occasion. My HIO was dog lucky: high, 3y cut into the wind that DUNKED in the hole (with the Covid foam in it) how can you get any luckier? As I mentioned, we were playing greenies and my mom's cousin had just hit it to about 5' so I said prior to hitting the shot, "well, now there's no pressure because I'm not getting inside of that." The proceeded to dunk it with minimal damage to the cup, almost a swish: Also, an albatross/turkey vulture is 100x cooler and while I had come within inches on at least three other occasions to making a HIO, the closest I've ever gotten to an albatross is like 8 feet, once.

  8. COBRA GOLF LAUNCHES LIMITED EDITION RICKIE FOWLER PROTO IRONS Carlsbad, Calif. (January 25, 2021) – COBRA® Golf, a leader in golf club innovation, unveiled today its highly anticipated, limited-edition COBRA RF Proto Irons, a design collaboration with longtime COBRA ambassador and five-time PGA TOUR winner, Rickie Fowler. The RF Proto Irons are a replica of the head design that Fowler plays to provide golfers with an opportunity to experience what it feels like to play the same tour-caliber irons trusted weekly by one of game’s most popular players. The design is the result of multiple shape and spec revisions that evolved over the span of 12 months to get the perfect iron. The process involved COBRA engineers and longtime Director of Tour Operations, Ben Schomin, working with Fowler every step of the way, applying his design direction, turf-interaction feedback and aesthetic preferences to the overall design, which underwent 32 iterations before arriving at the final version, hence the Rev33 stamp. Interestingly, the entire set is designed around a 7-iron appearance, Fowler’s favorite iron shape. Atypical of most iron sets, which feature progressively rounded edges as you transition from the long irons to short irons, each RF Proto iron (4-PW) is designed with distinct sharp edges on the toe and topline area to suit Fowler’s eyes. They also deliver zero visible offset by ensuring that the hosel was developed with no taper. Perhaps the most striking feature of these irons is their distinctive, head-turning copper finish that was hand selected by Fowler after considering dozens of finishes. “We have been working with Rickie on these irons for quite some time, and we feel they represent a fitting tribute to our decade long partnership,” said Schomin. “We worked closely with Rickie to determine his favorite features of several of his previous sets that we were able to combine into one very sleek package. These are a must-own for better players who appreciate the finest of iron craftmanship or Rickie fans who would jump at the opportunity to own the same sticks their favorite player uses.” Like any Tour Player, Fowler demands perfection when it comes to shaping. With the RF Proto irons, COBRA delivers the ultimate precision iron, fit for a Tour player or better golfers. Each iron is forged two times from a soft 1025 carbon steel and is then machined using a 100% CNC milling process. The entire milling process takes a total of 155 minutes per iron and produces the most precise shape and specs without any inconsistencies. Like Fowler’s gamers, this CNC milling process is used to deliver the most exact specifications and shape that Fowler designed. To aid in pure shot making and offer some added stability, the RF Proto Irons, like his gamers, utilize a tungsten weight that is positioned out on the toe to better center the CG, per Fowler’s request. The result is an iron that delivers superior feel and precision throughout the set. For the collectors, the limited-edition RF Proto Irons are shipped in a high-end, custom box, which celebrates the partnership between Fowler and COBRA, complete with a card of authenticity, stamped by R&D and autographed by Rickie Fowler, for an unboxing experience like never before. The standard offering features KBS C-Taper shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet ALIGN grips equipped with COBRA CONNECT. A full selection of custom shafts and grips are also available. The standard set features 4-PW and retails for $2,499. Available in RH only. Beginning today they are available for pre-order through cobragolf.com and will begin shipping and be available at retail on Friday, January 29, 2021. For more information on the RF Proto Irons and all of COBRA’s products, visit www.cobragolf.com.

  9. OK, this one was terribly unexpected, but the price was good. Trade/re-sale value is still pretty good, too, so I'm not out a lot if it fails. Time for a driver shootout! Saddest thing about this purchase? Largely driven by the fact that I love how the Optifit hosels don't change the shaft/grip orientation. Having a mis-aligned shaft/grip drives me nuts on my Cobra (I know, I could pull and re-orient, but...).

... LOL, that would work for me. I do have 6 pair of Ecco Biom Hybrids with 4 in rotation and 2 in reserve so probably set on shoes. Of course I am always very happy for any golfer that gets a HIO. Thanks for the well wishes and while I have mentally given up on a HOI, anything is possible. ... I have 2 Albatross (double eagles) and while some say that requires more skill, and admittedly it does take 2 really good shots, I was certainly not aiming at the flag for either one just trying to find the green and just got lucky. OTOH, I have had good yardages and aimed right at the flag hundreds of times and a HIO remains elusive. In 35 years I have scared the hole coming up 1" short twice and spun back an iron hitting the flag stick and bouncing away a few inches once. My cousin who has never broken 100 has 4 HIO's. I saw him top a 5 wood down a hill from 160yds, jump over a little stream, bounce on to the green and roll in the hole. He was pretty stoned as usual and shot 103 that day. A second HIO came after a 30 yard slice hit a tree, bounced back on the green and rolled in the hole. Without the tree he would have missed the green by 40 yards away and in the woods. Ya gotta love the Golf Gods.

  13. I'm being purposely ambiguous, as there is some work to do on my end over the next month or so, but I spent some money today on several items I'm really excited about. I wasn't planning on it, but I wasn't happy with how my bag was going to look heading into the season. If the person in customer service was right, UPS should be dropping off the first (and arguably most important) box yet this week! More to come... I promise.

  14. My goals for 2021 are pretty simple Spend some time every day working on some aspect of my game. Full swing, short game, mental game, or strength and flexibility. (24/24 so far) Remember why I started playing this game. Get back to golf being fun. Enjoy my time at the course. Try to recognize that shooting low scores is not as important has having a good time. Play some great courses in the PNW. Good luck to everyone in 2021!

Recently watched a review video from TXG (i know some ppl like them and others dont) but it gave a great perspective of the new drivers on the market from Cobra, Mizuno, and Srixon when compared to Titleist. They made it known that there are 7 excellent drivers on the market! Will be very interested to see how the 2021 Most Wanted Driver test goes and if these companies send out Drivers for our Forum members to test! Could turn some heads!

Appreciate the insights guys! I think I'll pass on the ramset since I don't have a the gun and it would get pricey to hang just a few cabinets. Might use the tapcon to install 2x4 french cleats and get them nice and level, then hang the shelves - that way I could always change/remove them down the road if I need to.

    How'd you play?

One of the last rounds I played this year with 3 others at a private club and there was a guy playing solo behind us (it was 40 degrees) and we could see the green of the par 3 we just finished from our tee box and one of the guys in our group went "holy sh*t, he just made that!".... the guy who hit the ball didn't even react and when he got to the green the 4 of us gave him some applause but he was kind of ho-hum.... I suppose if you're playing solo it doesn't have the same effect.

  20. I decided that my wife's yoga mat would do me more good than her.. split in half and taped end to end makes a perfect 10' runway. Rolls true at about a 10. Added marks at 10', 5', and 3'. 3-5 footers have been the my nemesis. One of my goals for 2021 is to make my weakness (putting) my strength. After spending a week with this setup, the Puttout, a new toe-heavy blade putter, and a putt stroke overhaul, my round on Saturday I already noticed my putting had had improved night and day. Feel like I still have some work to do but everything already feels so much more comfortable. Super stoked!

Hey guys, got a question for the brain trust - buddy gave me some old cabinets that I am hoping to put into my basement workshop. It's all hallow cinder block walls down there, so what type of anchor should I use to hang the uppers? Looking at tapcon, toggle bolts, concrete anchors...gets confusing! They will need to hold a decent amount for tools, batteries, clamps, solvents, screws, etc... Wouldn't think any single cabinet would hold more than 200lbs, though. Also been thinking about a french cleat system to make hanging them much easier, or even putting up a rough framing wall in front of the cinder blocks and hanging the cabinets into the wall studs. Welcome your thoughts as I finally build out the new shop!

2 Albatross is amazing. I’m going to forecast your first HIO. Long par 3, water front and left of green, pin cut on the left. You’ll aim for centre of green, pull it, think it might be wet, get a kick back to the right and into the hole. After that you’ll have one a year for 3 years. So remember this whenever you play a long par 3 with water left

  26. So I have been working on my coaching points and wanted to share an update! My shot shape has become more predictable and better. My snap pull hook is slowly disappearing as a slight push with a draw has become more prevalent. Still have the wild pull here and there however my last 15 shots today where very tight and solid. With 7 Iron for example my Distance has decreased from 210 yards with a SD of 22.9 to 185 yards with a SD of 6.7. way more consistent and repeatable distance with much less fatigue. Additionally my miss 30.1 Yards to the left with a SD of 21.5 down to 1.9 yards to the Right (improved shot shape and trajectory) with a SD of 14.33. Still a lot of room for improvement but the grooving of the new swing has gone well to this point.

  27. Ha, you know me too well. To be honest, had I found a composite shaft that worked during the 2019 fitting/G410 purchase, I'd probably be content. But then there is the length question, the window of opportunity reality, the slew of MGS Official Testing, and, of course, the BIG question whether any can compete with PING .

  28. I'm thinking that by the time you decide on which club you want to pull the trigger on, you are going to realize that the next cycle release is only 3 weeks away and might want to test all the next cycles clubs too. Given how long those ping eye 2's stayed in the bag, I think you have about 7 more years and 16 more fittings before you get a new set

  31. They shouldn't be of course but we are all different in the way we attack the ball. My misses tend to be thin - I found that thin hits were often weak and right with the G30 - they are pretty much hole high and a bit left with the D7's. My thin may be different from yours though - I also find that I can get away with a tad fat and bit on the toe.

I prefer using powder actuated nail gun “Ramset”. They make charges for all different concrete including block. Or tapcon works too just a little more tedious. Will cost a little more if you have to by the gun. Made finishing my basement super easy (if you do get the trigger one not the hammer one)

  42. Back under the old handicap system, you were supposed to play to your handicap about 25% of the time (https://www.oga.org/back-basics-handicapping-101-playing-your-handicap). I haven't found an update to that logic since the change to the WHS. Looking at my last revision, 3 of my last 20 scores have differentials at or below my index, and another two scores are .5 or less above my index. So I guess the 25% rule is pretty much still in tact.

At the time, I was a huge Mizuno fanboy and wanted Mizuno golf shoes but they obviously arent available in the states, so those were the next best thing. They actually worked quite well and I wouldnt hesitate to do the same thing again if I didnt want traditional golf shoes (saddle shoes).

It does amaze me how many how really good golfers I know haven’t had a hole in one, and conversely how many very mediocre golfers I know who have had several. Pretty sure your eagle count would top the vast majority of us here on MGS. Can’t help but think you may be slightly more jealous of @yungkory’s shoe count than his hole in one. Hope you get your hole in one soon and celebrate by buying a few pairs of shoes

There used to be a do that lived off the 11th green at a course i play in E. Wash quite a bit. the dog would grab the ball and run back by his house, and lay down.. All you had to do was walk up to him and he'd let you grab you ball, he thought of it as a game to get attention.. never take it so you could not find it just off the green to where he would lay down... the owner let a bucket on a post just on his property with a sign about the dog.. "If my dog took your ball feel free to replace it, also local rule is to place it as close to original spot as possible.. P.S. dog love to be petted..".. you could always find proV's in the bucket, the owner would pick up more from the pro shop as the bucket got low..

  47. I'm staying out of the officials call thing - Allowing a guy to catch a 53 yard TD pass with a second left in the half and then fumbling the ball deep in your own territory to start the second half? The refs didn't do that. Being unable to protect your QB consistently all day and eschewing the run while it was working fairly well and never throwing a screen? The refs didn't do that. Kicking a field goal with the ball on the 8 yard line and giving the ball back to Tom Brad with less than 3 minutes were left in the game. That is up there with one of the worst examples of game management that I have ever seen. Unless someone saw a ref handing the Packer's coaching staff a stack of 20's on the sideline that wasn't there fault either. No wonder Rogers in up in the air with what he's going to do going forward today. I was flabbergasted at the way the Packers shot themselves in the foot all day. Some of that credit belongs to the Bucs as well - they have great receivers, their defense was as tenacious as modern rules allow and there's not much you can say about the clutch performance of their QB on third down or O-line in consistently giving him enough time to complete down field passes. You loose because you loose

Frustrating problem: I laid large (18"X18") on our enclosed Lani using premixed thinset and the tiles are still not set after a couple of weeks . I assume it's because of the amount of thinset (the concrete had a lot of dips) and the outside temp in the evenings. I'll never use premix for outside use again. Hopefully I'll be able to grout this weekend and upload some pics.
