How do you select your wedges?

Recommended Posts

Do you primarily stay with the same manufacturer as your irons? Do you select them based off of loft to space your degrees properly? Do you go to a demo day or get fitted?

I go to the demo days to see if I like the look and feel. Then I buy them to fit the distance gaps I have at the top end. Bounce is determined on the course conditions I will most likely play. I am still playing the original Titleist spin mill wedges, but I am looking to replace those this year.

I do loft for yardage and bounce angle for turf conditions. I go 50, 56 and 60 and play a course with deep bunkers, very tight bent grass and some thick rough around the greens. So I make sure my 56 has at least 12 degrees of bounce to handle the thick stuff and my 60 is only 4 degrees bounce to help me with tight lies. A lot of players have gone to the 64 to escape the bunkers but I don't want to take the 75 yard shot out of play so make do with the 60.

Yeah I bought some Ping I200s this year 5-UW and the lofts are roughly 4 degrees apart. I purchased some used Ping Glide wedges in 54 and 58 but it looks like the distance gap UW and 54 is roughly the same.

I will stick with a model that works. I will scout eBay for a model from previous years even long after they are "old". If something performed well and the grooves can't get any bigger or sharper on new models then I've got nothing to gain 👍

Since we don't have a golf store nearby, I go mainly off of reviews. The closest GG is about 90 minutes or so away, so once I'm interested in something me and my buddy will make a trip to check things out.

I really want a set of the RTX 3 wedges, but I know I should hold off.

We're lucky here as we have a regular circle of 20 or so friends who play together regularly. The driving range is always a mini demo day, with everyone feeling free to just grab from anybody's bag and try anything.

Nobody is worried about someone putting an idiot mark on their driver or putting bad mojo on their putter.

So for me I tried a friends 50* SM6 last year and was hitting crisp chips and pitches off just about any lie. It was the first time I had ever hit a Vokey wedge. I was hooked on the feel. I've always liked a 4 degree wedge gap. So the next day I immediately ordered a 50, 54 and 58.

I go a lot based on reviews, and I'll pop into a Dicks' Sporting Goods and try to hit some on the monitor. Have never been fitted for wedges (or really any club for that matter) but for me, wedges are mostly about how they feel in hand.

The wedge has to sit right. I'm a low bounce guy on my wedges so if I see too much of that leading edge off the ground, I get worried. Then I make sure that I can hit all of the shots that I want to. I always liked the V-sole on the SCOR wedges, but I couldn't flight the shorter shots, so it was out. Make sure it fits your eye and your swing more so than trying to match a wedge to different course conditions.

I used Vokey SM5 wedges they were awesome, went for a set of RTX 2.0 simply because I could order them dead cheap, they were awesome.

Ordered RTX 3 raw on release again because they were dead cheap.

They are good but struggled with the v.sole in 60* in firm and dry conditions. Now it's wet (winter) it's awesome.

Ordered a milled grind 60* LB to relieve the issue I had with the v.sole and it's was awesome but struggled when the ground became very wet, so put the Rtx 3 back in the bag..

My point being, almost any brand wedge Will suit anyone, just get the correct grind and lie angle (most important) then get used to it.

May take a little bit to figure the sole out but 95% of the time it will work very well no matter what it is..

Of all the testing I have done callaway seems to spin the most but for me Cleveland were very close and by far the cheapest...

I'm a club fitter and have most wedges available for testing and a GC2 for data.

The trick is getting used to the sole .

I feel there are two ways to set up a wedge set. Either 52-56-60 or 54-58, although I'm seeing lower lofts on 9s and PWs now so a 50 may be required depending on the set. Personally I have 54-58. After that was decided I looked at bounce. Munis and publics don't get enough water so I wanted low bounce to be able to trap the ball on hard fairways during the summer. I found that Vokey had the lowest bounce with 4 degrees on the 58, so that's what I bought. I just replaced it and 4 is still the lowest, but if some other OEM offered less I'd switch.
