Practice Round Shorts...!

I don't see a problem with it - it's only a practice round- I'm against shorts during tournament play though.

But a practice round is just training to get ready for the tournament, to get yardages and get to know the course. Give them a little break. It's not like they are wearing t shirts or swim trunks like SBK17

Then it's probably more of an USGA issue. In Germany, they require you to pass a written test with rules and etiquette. And you have to score X amount of Stableford points to get your golf permit.

 

Granted, a lot of clubs just want more members so they hand out permits like candy as long as you pay. But the regulations are there nonetheless.

 

And serious clubs will also ask for minimum hcp to let you play during weekends.

they're not out there whithout belts and shirts hanging out.  there is a way to wear shorts and still look professional.

these guys have clothing sponsors that don't want them looking like sh*t on the course.

 

and comparing to Arnie ... didn't he have a smoke while he played?  CAN YOU IMAGINE if someone lit up IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROUND... how "unprofessional" would that be ???

Holy crap this thread is going nuts. I apologize that I fell multiple pages behind and didn't read them all, but had anyone offered this point?

 

 

Regardless of tradition, the course is still the workplace for professional golfers. These guys are out there setting an example for millions of children as to what being a professional means. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have to wear dress pants at my professional desk job. Let someone walk through here with shorts and they'll be turned right around by their supervisor. Consider the practice rounds "casual Fridays" for us civilians. For us, you still better at least wear a decent pair of jeans and never shorts.

 

Does it hurt the game? No. Does that mean it's OK? I still say no.

I'm sorry that I like traditions, but they look like a bunch of goons out there. The game is already being ruined by the non ball maker repairers, slow play...etc.

Relax, you clearly wanted a certain level of banter.  Your first half-a-dozen posts paint that picture quite well.  Wearing shorts isn't going to "change the sport".  There simply isn't any correlation between wearing shorts and not fixing ball marks or slow play.

 

Nothing I have said within this thread was intended to be combative.  It was all intended as good-natured banter.  As a society, we don't always have to agree.  Quite the contrary, actually.  It's productively healthy for open dialogue in a functioning society. I disagree with most of your opinions about "change" and "tradition".  It doesn't make me wrong nor you right.  It is what it is!
