Had a quick lesson today

First day out today. Finally...we had some sun in Western, NY. It felt great and made a lot of good swings for the first day out. I noticed that long irons were really lousy today. I got in touch with an old friend who is a PGA professional in Eastern Massachusetts. Sent a video and he explained this so easily it makes me wonder how I missed it.

 

I have two photos of the swing and it shows me pulling the butt end of the club to the ground. It creates a ton of lag but causes me to flip and get stuck.

 

Back to lower body and getting my elbows closer together and I think it'll be a good way to pave the way to a better swing. Thanks to PGA staff who are willing to offer quick tips and advice.

He's a good man and always pays it forward. I stopped wearing a glove about 8-10 years ago. It felt much better and the Tour Wrap 2g grips were super tacky.

It is still amazing to me still how the trained eye of a good instructor can see such small "flaws" in a golf swing and be able to suggest proper adjustments. It shouldn't be so amazing to me because I wind up doing the same things as an "instructor" in just about every sport I've participated in and can see things many others can't...! Golf is still voodoo for me i guess.

 

Anyhow, let us know how this tweak goes for ya. I may need the same help...

The easiest way to explain it is he can put into words what I am thinking. Some people have the gift to just translate that foreign language.

I couldn't agree more. It's tough watching golfers continue to take lessons and not improve. A good lesson to all in seeking someone who is relatable and can communicate effectively to help!

Looking good! Noticed the first pic on the side by side photo had you a little steep where the butt end of the club was pointing a bit inside of the target line. Second pic looks better on plane. Nice job!

I agree with Ping Apologist, it is amazing what an experienced golfer or instructor can see in someone's swing.  As a newbie to this game, I am still trying to grasp the swing basics.  Thanks for the post and the great comments.  It helps me see some of the intricacies of a swing.

Do yourself a favor and get a few lessons.

 

I spent the first 2-3 years I was playing fighting a massive slice. I tried every Youtube tip I found and was frustrated beyond belief. It was ridiculous.

 

I knew someone who was a former head pro and mini tour player and he offered to give me a few lessons. Within 3 swings he stopped me and pointed out that my shoulders were pointed 30 yards left of my target. I was so wide open that a slice was inevitable. Not once had I ever considered that as a reason for my slice. I went from shooting 115+ to mid/low 90s not long after as a result.

 

Seriously, think about a few lessons. Don't spend years and countless range sessions frustrated and discouraged like I did.

That's good stuff right there! I've had a "mini" lesson when I had a Pro evaluate my equipment (post sale) that turned into more instruction than checking lofts & lies. At the time, he gave me great advice on a better grip, swing plane and several other things to help me. At the time, I was still very green and really didn't grasp everything he was instructing me to do. Now that I've had a bit more experience, I now see that he was spot-on with everything and I'm ready now to take some more lessons with some better understanding on what the heck they'll be tweaking and why. It was also funny that I ran across this video series from Rick Shiels the other day that is exactly everything he was having me try!

I have started taking some lessons. I have only had 2 lessons so far, but I am loving it. It is definitely challenging to change aspects of my swing, but I am already seeing some improvements. My consistency has decreased, but that is to be expected in the short run.

Good for you! That's great to hear. Your body is learning and adjusting to new things, so it'll take some reps to develop that muscle memory. But you're going to build the foundation for a much better swing. Good luck!
