When the time comes to replace my current irons, I will seriously consider Maltby. I typically play a few clubs from the smaller manufacturer. Just last year I retired my MacGregor wedges and a year or two prior, my MacGregor driver.

If you're interested in just dipping your toe in the Maltby pond, I've started a thread that's gotten some pretty good traction. It's a review of the TSW wedge that was recently released. This wedge is probably one of the best looking AND performing in the market.. by market I mean ANY club manufacturer. You can have one built with a Stock shaft for $45 or go premium shaft for around $60.

This club has very quickly elevated itself to "Cold Dead Hands" club and is probably my most favorite and most used in the bag.

It came in! Actually came yesterday so I was able to build it last night.

KBS Tour 90 S flex 3i shaft. With the GW collared stock ferrule.

It's hard to know from the pictures on GW just how "players" these really are. Well this should hopefully give some perspective.

I know it's not a 1/1 comparison but they'll be relatively close. The W/S are considered "player's" game improvement irons. The DBM are a hair smaller. Both are 4 iron heads. The Cleveland is a 3 iron. The Cleveland Tour Action MB blade is probably one of the most compact blades ever produced.. that I know of. The TS-1 is right between the DBM and Cleveland.

This is truly a beautiful looking iron! Looking at it in person, probably one of the best looking on the market. Fit/finish and lines are just checking all the boxes for me. Top line and sole width are just spot on!

I'll try to get it to the PGATSS in the next day or so to see if I need to adjust lie angle. As always, I'll have the guys there scratching their heads and questioning their own existence when I bring in a club that they've never heard of or seen and looks like something they should be selling for $2K for set. 0804201010a.jpeg

Those TS-1 irons are just stunning. Love the new button medallion they use now.

I am seeking advice from the Maltby veterans. Which 56* wedge is best suited for high handicappers? I am thinking about ditching my current 52* and 56* for just a 56* and I think I want a Maltby. I hear the TSW is not as forgiving and is best for better players. What say you?

My current Maltby lineup consists of all KE4 Tour+ irons, 4W and 3h.

The M Series + is certainly the way to go. You do have some choices on how much help you actually need.
The longer the sole the more forgiving they will be. Even the Tour model sole is longer than the TSW.
If you have room in the bag i do recommend keeping both a 52 and a 56 to give you more options on the course. The other chain of thought is to keep it simple and only have a 56.

I play the TSW and am a higher cap but my wedge game is one of my best parts of my game. I am unable to help you out with other wedges but the TSW are great

Unfortunately I don't have any advice to give on which Maltby wedge best fits your criteria but it looks like @Popeye64 made a good suggestion based on Maltby's write up on the M Series Wedge. That said, I actually feel like the TSW is more forgiving than it may appear. I've had quite a few approach shots that I hit off the toe and was amazed at how little distance was lost.

I'm with you though on the 56* only theory though. I've been playing the TSW 56* exclusively for a couple of months now and my short-game's actually improved! In my case, more options meant more clutter in my head. I will throw in the caveat though, to be sure and choose a club with good versatility. The grind on the 56* TSW allows for so many options so I'm really able to use it as a 52, 56, and 60*. The nice thing though is instead of trying to decide which club to use for the shot, it's which shot to use with the club. 🙂

Keep us all posted on what you decide!

Thanks for the advice. I currently have a set 49* plus the 52* and 56* previously mentioned. For my chip shots around the green and short pitches I have more confidence in the 52* than the other two. But I feel like the 49" can fill that spot just fine and free up a spot in my bag. The 52* is kind of a crutch.

So I just pulled the trigger on an M-Series+ Mid 56° wedge. It was recommended as the best choice for my situation. I wasn’t planning to buy today, but Golfworks has their 20% off custom shop orders going right now. Had to go for it.

I would consider myself a higher handicap but dropping. Have the TSW wedges and really like them. I have a 54 and 58 with kbs tour S+ shafts that seem to pair nicely together.

Love the lineup, how do the F5, DBM and TS1 compare?

So unfortunately I can't truly compare the TS1 set. My only field sample is just the 3 iron but from my last round, using in place of driver, the thing is just what the doctor ordered! I was hoping to get between 230 - 245 total distance and it delivered. I'll elaborate further on my opinions here in a bit.

So my current gamer set is the W/S Tour FG F5's. I played the DBM's for about 2.5 yrs and just loved the hell out of them. I loved them so much that I encouraged my dad to buy the exact same set, shafts and all. Well last year, I was doing what I do, and was rummaging through my local Offer Up posts, and a guy was selling a literally unused set of W/S F5's, 4 - GW for $125. The price seemed too good to pass up so I began to do some research. I didn't know much about the clubs but they looked great and the reviews were all saying "GET THEM!" and on top of that, the stock lengths and lies are just right so it was just plug and play. Between them and the DBM's I'd say that the W/S's are more forgiving when it counts. Heel to toe is just a hair shorter on the Wilsons. Top line is a little thicker but not off-putting, and the offset is very minimal so it didn't really feel like I was going back to a SGI by any means. The W/S's are 8620 "Forged" and DBM's are 1020. I'm not a metallurgist but my understanding is that the 8620 might be form-forged or even pressed but not a true forging. That said, the W/S's actually feel softer and springier than the DBM's. The lofts on the Wilsons are actually weaker by 1* and about as conservative as lofts get but I'm finding myself hitting the ball higher and consistently further than the DBM's. That said, there's definitely more going on with the W/S's as far as tech goes so that is probably why I'm finding them to be more forgiving and better feeling. DBM's are just no frills and no-nonsense. With the Staffs, My handicap has really come down. I'm not going to say that it's completely because of the clubs though. I put a lot of work in and joined an exec course a few months back so my course time has increased to about 2 rounds/wk vs 2 rounds/mo. With the improved game though, I don't feel like the W/S's are holding me back nor are they too little club for my game. They really deliver on the marketing claims of being a "player's" "GI" iron. Those 2 titles probably aren't meant to coexist but Wilson mad it happen.

Now for the TS1's, I'm really looking for something right in between the DBM and F5's. I still love the no B.S look and approach of the DBM's. No, they're not blades and are probably barely CB's but they're just pieces of soft steel made to hit a golf ball. That said, I've also come to appreciate some of the forgiveness and feeling of the F5's. The tech really does help when there's a missed hit off the toe. I still play the DBM's a few times a month and usually shoot around the same score as the Staffs, but I notice myself scrambling a little more. Luckily I'm pretty dialed in with my TSW wedge 🙂 (shameless plug). The TS1's just seem to be that mix of simplicity, feeling, and tech all wrapped into one package. I'm definitely set on getting the rest of the set built and have a feeling that it might be happening sooner than later.

That might be the case. When I made the order, I got the confirmation and noticed that all the grips were on backorder. GP tour velvets.. WTF?! I requested them to be uninstalled and would swap them for the GP microsuedes at PGATSS.

Well a phone call sorted that out. They were able to switch the TV's for the Microsuedes and put the order back on track.

That said, if you ask for them to be sent separately, you'll likely have to pay double shipping.

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..
