Splatt
G’day golfers. Next up on the PGA Tour, we’re heading to Torrey Pines in San Diego and the Farmers Insurance Open. Similar to last week, the Farmer Insurance Open is played on multiple golf courses, Torrey Pines North and Torrey Pines South. The pros will alternate North and South on the first 2 days with the final 2 rounds being played on the South course. · Torrey Pines North, Par 72 & 7,258 yards · Torrey Pines South, Par 72 & 7,765 yards A whopping 507 yards difference between the 2 courses means different strategies for each, and at over 7,700 yards, the South course is one of the longest setups on the Tour. Torrey Pines is always a fantastic venue for this event, but the courses are pretty popular with us ‘normies’ as well; the South course had 80,000 rounds of golf played on it in 2022, and the North course had 91,000! That’s a lot of lost Pro V1s. The Farmers Insurance Open starts earlier than normal and is the only event on the Tour calendar that is played from Wednesday to Saturday. Gotta get out of the way of the NFL juggernaut. Would you be able to concentrate on your shot, or would you be looking at the view? Luke List won this event last year for his first-ever career win after 206 starts, and he did it in dramatic fashion, too. He started the day 5 shots off the co-leaders Will Zalatoris & Jason Day, but a final round 66 for List would be enough to force a playoff with Zalatoris, even if he did have to wait 2 hours for Zalatoris to finish his round. I imagine List had a lot of time to think during those 2 hours. The playoff lasted one hole and the approach shot to the green was the deciding factor. Both pros were in the fairway bunker from the tee, but List left himself a 1-footer and tapped it in, while Zalatoris missed his putt. For me, a 1-footer isn’t a tap-in, I’ve 3-putted from closer. Field Highlights · Jon Rahm – Topping my highlights list again after his 2nd win in 2 starts in the 2023 calendar year, Jon Rahm is the man to beat this weekend. He looks unstoppable at the moment and, unfortunately for everyone else in the field, he also performs well at Torrey Pines. He won here in 2017 and his other 4 results have been T-5, 2, T-7, & T-3. Also, the 2021 US Open was held at Torrey Pines and was won by, the man himself, Jon Rahm. · Jason Day – He has hit a bit of form recently. Is Jason Day back? He also finished T-3 here last year after starting the day as co-leader. Hopefully, his form can continue and he can get another win after a few years of missing out. · Max Homa – Already has a win under his belt at the 22-23 season opener, The Fortinet Championship. He also finished T-3 at The Sentry Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago. Homa is capable of turning it on and rising up the leaderboard in any comp he plays in. · Justin Thomas – JT is back for his 2nd comp of 2023 after his T-25 performance at The Sentry Tournament of Champions. JT played some solid golf at The Sentry but just couldn’t seem to get his mojo going. He’ll be interesting to watch this weekend. · Collin Morikawa – He’s back for his first tournament after his collapse on the last day at The Sentry Tournament of Champions. Morikawa started the final round at The Sentry with a 6-shot lead over his nearest rival, but it all fell apart with his wedges and his putter, and he set the stage for a comeback victory for the ages for Jon Rahm. I’m sure this will still be very much fresh in his mind, so it’ll be intriguing to see how he plays, and if he can put his disastrous round behind him. The full field list can be found here. For those participating in the MGS Pick ‘Em competition, this is the last event before the competition starts at the AT&T Pro-Am next week. Who would you pick this week, and how would you do? GolfSpy_APH
I know Torrey has many split on weather it is a "good course" or not, maybe mainly for majors. However it certainly has a great name for itself and has some great views. Let's hope to see another great finish. As for my picks I'm going Cam Davis, Tony Finau, Max Homa, Taylor Pendrith and Theegala... Or Stallings. 3 Quote as of Oct 31, 2022 (Past WITB) Driver: TBD: Follow here: Driver Shootout! Splatt
I'm still mad at Theegala for last week. Ruined my multi, haha. For picks, I'd probably go JT, JJ Spaun, Jason Day, Kurt Kitayama, and Rahm-bo. Hard to think Rahm would make it 3 in a row for 2023, but, I wouldn't put it passed him.
