Putting Magnets in a Velcro Enclosure Headcover

Wondering if anyone has put magnets into their velcro enclosed putter headcovers? It drives me NUTS that the scotty headcover is velcro. I don't have much experience with sewing, but have a friend who is a seamstress on the side and I'm sure could take the velcro out and replace with magnets. Just wondering if anyone has done it, how many magnets you used, etc,?

 Basically  make  pouches with velcro on each side to attach to the current vecro.  depending on size I would say 3 each side.

I had my wife sew in a bigger magnetic closure on my head cover.  You can find larger flat magnets on Amazon. I had a Stitch putter cover, but the magnet was too weak.  She did use a sewing machine for it.  I tried Velcro first but the magnet and the Velcro wasn't great.

For last week I did put my Ryder Cup (Whistling Straits) Putter Cover in the bag.  Its magnetic and its awesome, so I might keep that for a while, since it looks nicer than my Stitch or my Scotty red head cover.

@Tom the Golf Nut & @cnosil looks like great minds think alike! This looks like a super simple solution. 

@KC Golf when you said the magnet and Velcro wasn’t great, what do you mean exactly by that? Just to make sure I am understanding clearly.

Great question @Jnoble89! I bought a magnetic headcover for my Scotty, because the Scotty Pewter velcro headcover kept falling off & it drove me nuts! I'm going to check out the conversion @Tom the Golf Nut posted! Let us know if you do indeed buy it Jason!

The stock magnet on the Stitch putter cover has a relatively weak magnet so I find it sometimes falls off.  I bough5 it a couple of years ago so May be it has changed.  Didn’t lose it since other people picked it up and gave it back to me or found it in lost and found.  So a larger magnet was sewn in by my wife.

The drawback from using a magnetized closure for head cover is ripping the material after frequent usage.  Velcro could be replaced but the ripped material could not be easily repaired.  Save your Scotty head cover and use aftermarket head cover featuring magnetized closure.  

Not just for saving the head cover from wear and tear, but the Scotty head cover is an advertisement for unwanted attention.  Thief on and around the golf courses are on the rise.

I would be tempted to go with an aftermarket headcover vs adapting the Scotty just for resale value.

I ended up ordering those Velcro magnet patches that both @Tom the Golf Nut & @cnosil linked. That way they can just be removed without affecting the original state of the Scotty cover. Will be actively looking for an aftermarket one most likely as well!

Most of the guys in our group will remove the OEM head covers from driver, fairway woods, hybrids and putter and replace them with generic head covers.  A popular theme on the head cover will be the local sports teams.

This is frequently practiced after someone's driver/putter was stolen at the bag drop area, one incident was right in front of the club house.  The club house has installed video cameras but it's better than paying the deductibles on insurance to replace the stolen golf clubs.  A golf bag containing a few thousand dollars' worth of golf clubs will attract opportunity thievery.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that too much as I live on my course and my clubs don't leave the back of my cart. So very rarely are they unattended. That being said, it certainly is something to keep in mind.

I like the velcro on my putter cover because the pushcart I use has a velcro lined pouch that is a good place to attach my glove and putter cover. I'm curious why the velcro drives you nuts?

I have had an aftermarket magnet closure cover on my spider tour for a couple years now and just prefer it to velcro. Easier on/off IMO and I can just stick it to one of my irons when it's off. Also all velcro covers I've had, it wears down quickly.

I have never had a magnetic putter cover so I’m sure I’d be the same way if I did have one! Let us know what you decide to do!

I actually already ordered the magnetic velcro patches that @Tom the Golf Nut & @cnosil linked earlier in the thread. Should have them sometime next week!

I've done it. I have this headcover. Eh. Link won't work. Your average Rose and Fire headcover with velcro though.

I removed the velcro with a seam ripper, made a small 1/4" or so slit in the fuzz, inserted the magnet, and the hand sewed around it. A couple things I would do differently when I do it again. One, that fuzz interior is really low end stuff, and that goes for all manufacturers including Scotty. You really have to get the needle under it. I used a magnet that about 3"x1/4"x1/4" from Amazon. They work VERY well. Unfortunately, the fuzzy interior is wearing between the two magnets. If I go this route again, I will sew nylon strap to the fuzzy interior, should last forever. I can get some pics if needed.

Just a quick update on this thread. I used some velcro attachments from Kicks Covers that I got on etsy that you just put on the velcro. They have been working FANTASTICALLY without modifying the stock Scotty headcover. 110% recommend them if you're like me and prefer the magnetic closure but have a Scotty.
