mr.hicksta
I played in two person scramble today at Mamala Bay and had a blast. Driver is still erratic as all hell, but I had a lot of fun. Highlight of the round was on hole 3, a par 5. I mashed my drive down the middle, leaving around 190 to a middle pin. I smoke a 5 iron that hi the front of the green and rolled to the back and then I hit my best putt of the day for an eagle! I was putting out of my mind most of the round and it's always nice to have confidence in the flatstick. Now I just need that same confidence in my full swing! cjeffs12
I have been playing/practicing quite a bit lately, but unfortunately I have had some very frustrating rounds. The last 4 or 5 rounds I feel like I have never swung so good in my life, and my ball striking has been phenomenal. My scores have been consistent and my handicap has fallen, but my scores just haven’t been where I feel like they should. I’ve had my pity party, and moved on, work will be busy the next two days so it will be a much needed break. On to the positive side of things, I know that better scores will come, and I’m for once really loving my swing. Also, highlight of the round last night was where I was an inch from holing out from 94 yards!! My regular winter and summer courses don't have combo's on the scorecard either so I started by circling the holes and making my own. But by now I know them without looking of course. One of my playing pards turned 80 this spring and gets it out there pretty well for his age but I finally talked him into playing a combo from the senior tees and the most forward tees. Thankfully he is secure in his masculinity and after playing the longer par 4's from the red tees (still unfortunately called Ladies tees by too many) he enjoyed it much more than all Senior tees. But he likes to talk and like you sometimes forgets to move up a tee until I remind him. Popular Post chisag
... I played a practice round yesterday because I am still recovering from Bronchitis and a little weak but my energy is starting to come back. Some holes I played a couple balls and some only one. After hitting quite a few miserable shots I started to feel better about my swing by #7 and then did something I have never accomplished in all my years of playing. I holed out an 8 iron from 157 for an eagle on the 8th. #9 is a short 472 yd par 5 and after a decent drive and an excellent 5 wood I had 15 feet and made the putt for 2 eagles in a row. I have had 2 eagles in a round a few times but never 2 in a row. Playing alone it was pretty anticlimactic. ... As they heat increased to 106* and I sat waiting on the tee for the groups in front of me on the next par 5, I carded a double bogie without a penalty shot. Poor drive and punched out followed by a nice 5 iron that hit a slope and bounced 45* left into a bunker with a deep lip and I had to play sideways leaving a 101 yd 50* wedge that I hit long leaving a 30 footer from the fringe that I copied up and tapped in for a double and I really hate bogies on par 5's let alone doubles. Skipped the next 2 holes to get around the logjam bypassing 3 groups and had the last 4 holes to myself. Hit more poor shots than good shots as I was really tired by then and the heat was getting to me. Just a reminder of how crazy this game can be. mr.hicksta, Josh Ross, GaDawg and 9 others 12 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... AutoFlex Dream 7 SF405 Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... JerBooth
Last Wednesday was my first 9 holes since last year. October 2021. Why so late some may ask? I suffered a significant rotator cuff injury. Inflammation of my supraspinitus and infraspinitus were the culprits and super painful. I thought my golf season was done for. Lots of physio and strength training and a go ahead to try and play. Take it easy at first and see how the shoulder reacts to ground interaction. It all went well. 3 holes only my first time out 3 weeks ago, hurt a little and the swing was a little stiff. Ramped up to trying 5 a couple weeks. Shoulder was a little tired after 5 so I thought, that's it. Last Wednesday rolled around, shoulder felt good, so I told my wife I'm going to play 9 holes. No driver or 3-wood, both have X-Still shafts, Irons and hybrid only. I went out and shot a 40 on a par 36. Kenny B
Shot 78 with one double and 4 birdies! Woo Hoo! My wife was a little peeved as I get a hug for each birdie. That ties my all time number of birdies in a round that I had last year. I had 3 birdies twice this year. Really hitting the Macgregor irons good and had to adjust my distances a little bit since I seem to be compressing the ball a little better. Popular Post edingc
My wife and I had a nice vacation this week. Shot a 40 on the back at home before leaving, but most importantly figured out my driver somewhat and pounded a 295+ one near the end of the round. I didn't really intend to play golf at all while away, but my wife encouraged me to bring my clubs. I'm glad I did as it was a blast. First, we visited this awesome little par 3 course in Traverse City called Bay Meadows where I was able to really give the Edel wedges I'm testing a good workout. Took less than an hour to walk, and I hit some good/some bad shots. One really bad 8 iron lead to a bogey, and my putting was terrible. Shot a 29 (+2) with seven pars and two bogies but had a blast and nearly holed one with a perfect 9 iron from 160. Hope to be back. Such a cool little place (they also have a slightly longer "executive" nine as well), with some rolling topography. While we were out for coffee one morning, my wife asked where else I could play. She found a course further north called Sugar Loaf, which was built in the 1960s at the base of a now-closed ski resort. Naturally, there were a ton of elevation changes, most noticeably on No. 17, which is a 618-yard par 5 with a massive uphill shot to the green. I played from the back tees, and I believe based on rating this was the toughest course I've ever played (6,787 yards - 74.2/139 rating/slope). I ended up going 47/45 -> 92 (+20) without losing a golf ball. Most of my strokes came on two holes, a triple bogey when I hit the false front of a green three times chipping and had the ball come down and a quadruple bogey on the aforementioned No. 17 above. I hit a perfect drive, perfect layup, but my 7 iron into the elevated green came up just short and rolled down into the long grass. I ended up taking an unplayable lie and then unfortunately 3-putted to top it off. Really interesting course with the back nine being very tight with no where to miss and the front being more open but still penal. I drove the ball incredibly well (including catching a downslope and running out to 320-ish), but my irons were low/left most of the day and my short game/putting were not crisp at all. So many strokes left out there right around/on the greens. Still, playing this course showed how far my game has come in the past couple of years. I could have never dreamed of playing from the back tees at a course like this from ~6,800 yards and not lose a single golf ball. Walking away with a good sense of accomplishment but of course disappointed I couldn't break 90. My ideal length is around 6600yds depending on the par 4's but I am comfortable down to about 6200. That means for my 2 favorite courses the most fun is a combo round with 9 holes from the whites and 9 holes from the silvers. But depending on how I am playing and who I am playing with, I enjoy all white or all silver too. I have even moved up to the gold tees with some super seniors and felt like Rory LOL. While I prefer to hit a 4 or 5 iron and even my DHy to the most difficult par 4's on the course, I certainly would not want to hit long irons or hybrids and worse fairway woods on all the par 4's. And by the same token I would not want to hit mid and short irons into every par 4 either. ... I think more players should look at a combo round and it doesn't have to be 9 and 9. If two of the par 4's are egregiously long for your ability, move up those two holes. If there is a shorter par 5 you might be able to reach into from the next tee up, play from there too. The scorecard is just a suggestion if you aren't seriously keeping a handicap, and even if you are there is nothing wrong with a fun round that you don't count for index purposes. I am so with you on this - I’ve started playing 9 holes on Sunday afternoons with my son and some friends. We mix and match tees regularly - My club is a big course - even the whites are too much for me anymore in that they wear my fairway woods out - The par 5’s and par 3’s are relatively short so that means some very long par 4’s to get to 6,200 - 5 over 400 which is long at sea level. We see what the wind is doing and then set our course from there - it has 5 sets of tees so it’s really fun - we will sometimes play an over 400 yard par 4 - sometimes we will play a par 5 from the front tees and call it a 4 and a par 4from the tips and call it a 5. The idea is to set a course that allows us to use all of our clubs - my son gets a different set up. CarlH
Stunk it up today. No idea what was going on other than it being VERY hot outside, but I shot 44 on the front with 3 double bogeys and 40 on the back with 2 more doubles. Feast or famine today. Popular Post sirchunksalot
I've been off work all week and finally got out to play 9 today. It's been crazy having to deal with a sick cat and the weather hasn't been too great either with almost daily storms rolling in. It was beautiful and extremely muggy out. It's 90 with a heat index of 101 right now. Needless to say, I didn't take the push cart. Today was the best day I've had on the course in a long time. I shot 47, hit 2 greens, and putted 17 times. I'm disappointed in my putting because I had 3 first putts inside 6 feet and 2 putted all of them. Between that, a horribly chunked 6 iron, and a duffed chip it could have been so much better. I'm not going to complain though, because I didn't lose a ball. I continue to be impressed with the MaxFli Tour ball. I had some major tour sauce on a couple of shots and the second photo was from 25 yards and the second it came off my 52, I thought it was going to roll out for miles. It checked aggressively and stopped 6 feet from the hole. I've been working the last couple of weeks on establishing a better pre shot routine, keeping the club more square in the takeaway, and not swaying. It's starting to pay off and I was rewarded with the best day with my irons I can remember. I also was approached by these fellas and wish I would have had something to give them. cksurfdude, edingc, GolfSpy_APH and 10 others 12
PMookie
Played at our public course this morning with a couple guys I always used to play with. Another round of “golf swing” after the 5th hole all the way to 15. The course is in such horrible shape that I just can’t even bother trying. Popular Post mynerds
Shot a true 58 (no mulligans, no kicking of balls, no shenanigans at all) at the municipal 9-hole, which is fairly typical for me. However, I had the worst day putting for me (four 3-putts) and at least 5 penalty strokes. I had a legitimate birdie shot on a par 4, hit 3 fantastic drives off the tee including the 1-handicap 386 yard par 4, and my PW was absolutely dialed in the entire day. I'd really like to break 50 there this year, which I think would be a fantastic achievement given where I started this winter. EDIT: Uploaded my scorethrough the CDGA and it showed an adjusted score of 49, probably adjusting for maximum hole scores or some handicap rule I don't understand. Oh well, here's to /sort of/ breaking 50! It's amazing that you can go to extremes like I do. You get excited to go play, either alone or with friends. Then you get on the course and realize it's in bad condition and then you just go through the motions because you paid. But you really don't care. Popular Post Golfspy_CG2
Still scrathcng my head over yesterday, I played the best golf of probably the last 10 years and the worst golf of probably the last 5 years. All in the same round. Don't believe it, this might explain it. 38/58 for 96 Yep, The 38 was nothing specacular, just fairways/greens two putts a couple birdies mixed with a double bogey thrown in. The 58 was all over the place. 3 lost balls on one hole, 2 more on another, a few heavy chunks here, at least 4 putts that looked ike they were dead center 6 inches away and somehow still missed. During the front 9 I really did a good job of not getting ahead of myself and trying to focus on one shot at a time. If I missed the fairway the thought was, ok just get it on the green or close enough where you can get up and down. On the back 9 it was more of a--don't do that again, or you idiot what were you thinking, make a turn, check your alighment...blah, blah all that type of head stuff. I will say it got very hot and humid the last 3 holes and that was definitely a factor on my last hole which was the one with 2 lost balls and a chunk--all that after piping one of the best drives of the day..ha Oh well, tomorrows another day. Other than the heat, a pretty common problem. (I am trying to decide if I want to play in 111* today myownself) After being sick for 3 weeks and losing weight, strength and energy my first round back was abysmal but I just accepted my limitations and played golf. To be clear, I was not a happy camper taking bad swings and hitting poor shots but knew attempting to fix anything in the middle of the round is a recipe for going down a rabbit hole. Next round was better and while I shot a 74, it was all smoke and mirrors as I can honestly say I didn't hit any shots up to my normal standards. Kinda funny but the 3 high index partners I shared the day with were amazed at my play as they all shot over 100. Perspective. ... Hitting an excessive draw starting on one side and finishing on the other a good 15-20 yds short of my normal drives were excellent tee shots to my pards although very disappointing for me. But I played the round as you did your front 9, one shot at a time and was able to either scramble for pars or marginal approach shots left a tap in after a long lag putt, along with one bird and 3 bogies. Practicing golf should entail all the work you are willing to put in both physical and mental but playing golf should always be attempting to hit the best possible shot you are confronted with at the moment and never addressing your last swing/shot or your next swing/shot... just the swing/shot you are playing. Obviously it is one of the difficult parts of golf, ignoring a bad swing or horrendous shot when you play your next shot.
