The 1 iron challenge

So looking for a one or two iron to replace a 5 wood (better to punch out from under a tree lol), and stumbled across this ad on ebay with the best item description.

 

 

That mizuno mp h5 looks real nice, would like some input for those that have played them. Obviously I'll try one out with my fitter before, but like to hear some input

It's not that bad man. Don't be scared of it. It's pretty forgiving too. Height is the only issue. If you aren't a high ball hitter then steer clear from the 1i. Only 1 thing I'd change in hind sight. I wish I had put a low launching graphite shaft in mine instead of the Ctaper X to save weight. Do you hit the ball pretty straight with your irons? Also I wouldn't expect to hold a ton of greens with that thing either. The mph5 2i with a graphite shaft may be a better match for you if your looking for a true 5w replacement.

Good call on the loft adjustment, I'll have to mess around with my fitters clubs. I also play them shorter, my driver is 44.5", 5 wood is 41.5", 2i 38.75" and definitely helps with dispersion. I used this 2 iron and played a fade with it off the tee when I couldn't hit my driver straight, graphite might help eek out some more yards and like you said save some weight.

Heck go for it. I do not have a Mizuno 1 iron but have several different brands and can still hit them off a tee. I still carry and hit a VIP 2 iron that I bent back to 17*. It is for tee shots only because bent back it will dig to China in the fairway. As far as hitting and holding a green with a 1 iron it is hard to do unless it is at max distance and the ball dies in the air and drops right there. A 1 iron is a good chase up on the green club when the conditions permit and hope it gets it's run out and stops

Yeah don't for see holding too many greens with it. Watched rory rip done 3 wood over 270, during the Irish open and hold some greens that was impressive

That dude definitely hits it high. He has some history with a 2i. Anyone remember the Open he won? I think he went 2i-2i on the closing par 5.

With all due respect Fire in the hole if your fitter will work with a 1 iron that you are putting into your bag to punch it under trees you should move on to another fitter. He should be saying unless you can hit that thing successful 80 percent of the time don't waste your time. If you're good enough to hit 1 iron youre also good enough to hood a 4 and punch out that way.

Have to agree with Rev on this one. How often would you seriously use the club in a given round? A club for punching out under trees takes up a lot of space in a 14 club bag. Dave Pelz would tell you to drop it all together and add another scoring club like a wedge.

 

What if you just bent your long irons stronger to create larger yardage gaps between them. You have to seriously consider how often you hit greens from long iron distance to decide if you really need close yardage gaps. 

 

Or just play the 4 iron back in your stance.

I am making do with a 5i at the moment, I foolishly sold my 2i! Good point on the fitter. He and I had a conversation about it yesterday and I was hitting his 2i fairly well, even using it with the stock c taper lite- he is letting me use it for a week or two to decide.

He's also the person who convinced me to go to a 44.5" driver vs 45, who knew such a difference would be had by .5"? Ive just been undergoing a return to simplification with a lot of parts of my "game." The courses around here aren't long- sub 400yd par 4s, and narrow and using my old 2i I could play aggressive without excessive misses- look at driver.

I used either my 1i or 3i 7 times today out of 73 shots. I should have used it 2 more times and it may have saved me a couple strokes. Would've used it more than that if the tees were set up differently.

I am currently only using 13, so if it replaces my 5 wood it would stay at 13 and I already use a 46, 50, 54, and 58*. I havent looked at getting lofts adjusted, here are my current yardages. I am not using a 3 wood or 2I anymore however.

That's a big gap from 5-2i. I would address that as well. That's where the 14th would come in handy. I'd address that before a 5w replacement if it were me.

I wouldn't feel too bad Kenny, that distance comes with big misses lol. The pro I started working with this month has been having me work on dialing it down, seeing accuracy boost.

2 iron I could see. What's your bag composition? What would you have between the 2 and the 5? That is is huge gap.

Sorry I missed your earlier post on the bag. Another option might be to bend the 5 two degrees strong the 6 one and weaken the 2 a few degrees or you could just keep the 5 wood and out 4 hybrid in.
