I've seen the rough pics and putting surfaces. Yikes! The course doesn't look anything special but must be pretty dry on the greens

This isn't golf... they'll probably have a 290y par 3 too!

Golf should always allow good birdies to win not lucky ones. If the winner is over par this open is a fail. I want winning golf not survival.

I'm actually okay with this type of test for this event. Not every event has to be a birdie fest for me to enjoy it - Maybe it allows everyday hacks like me to commiserate with tour pros, but I just hope the USGA doesn't let the greens get all Shinnecocked...

I get tough but fair, but that shot of the rough was just plain crazy.  I think Oakmont prides itself on being punitive, but this is nuts.

I like to see the pros struggle, it is imperative this week to be in the fairway you don't have to be a long hitter to win, I like the over par finish, it won't be the first time, I don't care if it's fair or not, but what I dont want is to see excellence go Unrewarded, they are pros they should be very precise with the shot making ability, if you miss you will be punished, if you hit a great shot you should be rewarded, I hope this is the case.

One event out of fifty is fair game. Its as much a mental test as it is course management and skill.

They do.  Played it in high school with my Grandpop.  He was about a 10 at the time and he quit playing after 9 holes and just walked the back with me.  I think he shot something like 61 on the front or not far off from it.

Here is a good article on the membership at Oakmont.

A US Open course should be setup so -1 to -5 wins. If you miss a shot it should be hard to recover, not really really wrist breaking hard. At least have graduated rough so you're only punishing the severely wild drives etc. I'm cool with fits shooting 80 here and there, but 2/3 of the field better not be.

As for greens I've seen numerous videos and it's just getting stupid. I'm all for fast greens where it can run 10 feet past due to user speed error, but if you nestled one up close that should be only a couple feet and it ends up 20 then I'm sorry; stupid stupid stupid.

Talked to a good friend of mine today, who lives in the Great White North of MN with a lot of y'all. Anyways, he works in the turf mgmt business, specifically grinders to sharpen reel mowers. He calls on a LOT of big time courses YOU have heard of.

I asked him about Oakmont and the greens, specifically HOW short?

His reply: "0.95 (3/32") double cut morning and night"

Holy smokes; get ready for some fireworks.

I'm for harder courses on all tour stops. Same courses but a harder setup is what I'm talking about. I enjoy watching golf where those guys shoot 24 under. But come on. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of really good amateurs that could make the cut on those easy setups. Let's get the rough up a bit, corn-row the bunkers, narrow the fairways more. Perhaps some events need to move to venues that play longer. That way even a 350yd. drive will require a 5-6 iron approach. I'm dreaming. I know.

I'd like to see some data on which clubs the field hits most often during tournaments. In other words... which clubs are in the bag but never or rarely used. I'd guess the 4,5,6 irons are just along for the ride most of the time.

My Sun Mountain bag currently includes:   TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png 771CSI 5i - PW and TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png PFC Micro Tour-c 52°, 56°, 60 wedges

This is looking like it won't be a question of who wins on the greens as much as a question of who blows up the least often. I'll still go with 2 under par being the winner though, and it's gonna be a short game player who wins.

I think the winning score will be +4, in 2007, the easiest hole registered an average score of 4.05. The course will play more difficult this time, but the top of the field is better so the scores will be similar maybe a bit better, but no one will be u see par at the end.

I'm going plus 2. The U S Open is always about survival, that's its schtick. Half the field, including some top players, are out before it starts because they will let the conditions get into their head.

I don't really care what they shoot I just wish that the tour would allow guys to encounter similar conditions to what we face with all the regional differences thrown in. I've been to PGA events in NY, CT, WI, MI, ILL and FL. Other than the Palm trees at Bayhill you couldn't even tell what part you were in based on how the courses were set up. It's like the tour brings in its own course every time as if it were a traveling Broadway production.

Interestingly Westchester and Copperhead are the two shortest courses that I've seen events played on and they produced the highest scores for the winner.

I like the Majors because the course set ups vary. A player that can win all four in his career is truly elite and the one who finds a way to wing 3/4 is pretty much there too. Anything less is a wanna be.

Course is playing softer at least in the early groups. More rain expected today so it could become a tournament of two different golf courses.

I just went to watch and see that they are in a rain delay.  That will indeed change the course conditions.  We got a window into how much man made intervention can effect changes at the Players.  It will be interesting to see what this does to the course.

I saw a video of Spieth in a practice round the other. He was in the rough near the ropes off the tee. His second shot only went about 20 to 30 yards and he was still in the rough.
