What four clubs?

HotIce

Recommended Posts

I am not a big fan of golf games that limited the number of clubs used, but if you had to pick four clubs it says a lot about how you play the game. That introspection in selecting clubs will reveal not only the clubs used, but how you would use them in different scenarios. What four clubs would you take in your bag for a round of golf on an average 18-hole golf course (approximately 6600 yards long made up of Par-3, 4 and 5's)?

Would depend on how long the holes were.

I wouldn’t play - most people are not competitive with 14 clubs at 6600 yards.  If you tried to hold that competition at my club with a normal group of golfers the round would take 6 hours.

If it were from more normal 6,000 - 6200 yards I’d go driver, 7 wood, 8 iron, 52 degree wedge. (Normally those things are 4 clubs and putter, if not I’d putt with the 7 wood)

Driver: Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  R flex   - 44.25

Fairways:  Ping G410 5, 7, 9 wood  Alta CB red 65 R flex

Hybrid:  Ping G410  26 degree  Alta CB Red 70 R flex

Irons: Ping G430  7-PW, 45, 50 Alta CB black 65 soft R flex

Wedges:  Ping 195 S54, E58

Wedges and irons are - 1/2” and one degree flat

Putter: Sacks Parente Duke 32.5”

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

Similar. 4W - 6i - GW - putter.

Even with a full bag, I use D, 4i, 6i, GW & putter the most. Use 7W and LW the least.

When I was younger, we’d play with 1 club plus putter every once in a while - it’s entertaining. I’d go with 5i or 6i.

This is an interesting question.
After doing the Takomo iron challenge, I have more experience with my own game.

I would take: 3W (or 3H), 7 iron, 56 W and a putter..  For a Longer course I would take 3W while tighter course,I would take 3H.

I'm surprised there aren't more drivers in people's lists.

I'd go Driver, 7 iron, 54 degree, putter. I think I could take quite a bit off driver if needed from a tee and most par 5s I'd be fine just laying up with a 7 iron. I'd rather have the extra 20-30 yards off the tee with driver than having a 3 wood.

Just heard of a 4 on the 4th and thought it was a great idea, except I learned it was a 4-person scramble and that lost some of the allure for me. So I have thought about this recently and like it cause then I would not feel like I have to hit driver.

5 iron (favorite long iron, can probably get it 240 off the tee)

8 iron (favorite mid iron)

54 degree (can still hit this 130 plus all the short game)

  1. 2-iron (off the tee, long fairway shots).
  2. 7-iron (approach shots, lay-ups). I reckon it would be a somewhat decent club for 2nd shots on normal par 4s after having teed off with 2-iron). Lots of workability and flight options.
  3. 56° sand wedge (100 yds and in, chips, bunker shots).
  4. Putter. There is nothing that would save more strokes than putting with a proper in this scenario.

I like that idea too, kind of like the fantasy football playoff pool I do. Only one time use of a player the whole playoffs, have to think. You could just keep repeating the 3 hole match for a nine and just use each club in the bag 3 times.

I really think that it would be cool to see the pros do something like that. Or like the two players farthest to the right and two farthest to the left are on a team.

I am surprised by the number of members that will take their putter. If limited to clubs, I think about versatility. With a little practice, putting with a hybrid is relatively easy.
im not a long ball hitter, so for me it’s: 3W, 4 hybrid, 5i, and 50 wedge.

Played in a 3 club tournament (putter didn’t count as a club) many years ago and I used 7wood, 6iron, Pitching Wedge, and Putter. Today, I would use a 3hybrid, 7iron, Approach Wedge, Putter.

Callaway Epic 9.5, x2hot 4wood, Adams rescue, Mizuno JPX hot metal, Cleveland Wedges, Scotty Cameron Circa 62, whiskey and coke to start.
