Changing golf spikes

Recommended Posts

How often do you change out golf spikes?

  • after ‘x’ rounds/weeks/months
  • based on feel
  • when visible wear seen
  • ?

curious to see the answers

haven’t seen much written or posted about this (but only a brief search)

I can't tell you the last time I changed spikes. It seems to me that the durability of them has gotten pretty good. By the time I would need to change spike, I'm usually about due for new shoes so don't bother. My last 5-6 pairs have been either Puma or Adidas and they seem to design them with enough additional texture/features on the soles that I don't feel like I'm losing grip as the spikes wear.

I'm with @MaxEntropy on this one. I keep spare spikes and tool in my bag, but I've only had to replace ones that have come off entirely.

I switched back to spiked from spikeless and couldn't be happier.

I spent a little extra, so I'm hoping the uppers will last thru a couple spike changeouts.

When they seem to be worn.  For me that seems to be a couple of years; I play weekly so about 50 rounds a year

I take it all back 😂. I actually looked at my spikes and they certainly need some attention. This is the first year I've walked in a long time and didn't take that into consideration.

A couple are missing tines, but I'll probably just do a wholesale change.

These are new this year and I've played about 15 rounds in them, walking probably 10 of those.20230724_072204.jpg.9a96939819a4c39c0e2811bf68569c06.jpg20230724_072158.jpg.b0b269ebbd54a22ef1e95ca6e490b1cb.jpg

Usually clean my shoes off after every range session & round of golf and inspect the spikes. As soon as they are worn down or missing a tine or two I will replace them. I always do it on an ad hoc basis, rarely replacing an entire shoe(s).

All done! This was a bit of a chore. Hands-down MVP goes to this thumbtack.

Very useful for getting the dirt and pebbles out of the small holes the tool uses:

Also useful for cleaning out the cleat socket and threads before putting a new cleat in.

I walk most of my rounds once or twice a week. I have found that the Puma spikes hold up the longest (Picture below). Both pair of shoes I wear have the same type spikes and are over two years old. The spikes have not been replaced yet and still look good. I also make sure that while I am walking the course I walk on the grass and not the cart path. This really helps the life span of the spikes.

I want to say I've owned my Nike spikes for close to 10 years, and I've replaced the spikes twice. Both times I could visibly see that they were worn down. The before/after difference when it comes to grip on the course is noticeable.

I switched to Sqairz golf shoes from spikeless & love them!

Since I walk frequently, I like to change spikes after about 6 months. But so far the spikes are holding up well. I'll be ordering spikes through Sqairz, they have free replacements, just pay for shipping.
Also have a pair of Footjoy & New Balance, which are spikeless.

There are three shoe seasons where I live in Oregon. In summer I prefer spikeless. In early fall and late spring, I use cleated shoes. Winter and mud season are my cleated boots. After each season, both cleats get checked and if needed replaced. I used WD 40 spayed under the cleat to ease the removal.

I am tough on shoes and I am lucky if I get three seasons worth of each pair.

I walk the vast majority of my rounds, rotate between 2 pair of shoes, and change spikes about once a season.

I tend to replace them more frequently, because I have a bit of a grinding foot movement onto my left foot as I finish the downswing.  Think Scottie Scheffler level movement is where my leg / foot try to go, except I'm better when that foot stays planted...so it tends to dig in and really tear up spikes when I'm playing well (as I am right now).  Fortunately, the Sqairz that are also the best for my feet (due to some really stupidly shaped feet with a teenage girl's heel width and an above normal adult male's forefoot width...oh and my feet supinate, which makes it worse...) also give great traction.

So how often does everyone check their spikes?

and do you replace all spikes at once or one at a time?

I have some worn spikes currently

but not every spike is worn out

i probably will replace the whole set tho

I’m more curious than anything

I rotate a couple pair of shoes and check them in the spring before I play for the first time.

Typically, can play anywhere from 45 - 75 rounds per year (season in Michigan) depending upon work schedule and other plans.

Check them periodically, especially if I am walking more rounds, and try to limit contact with concrete surfaces at the course.

Best to replace them all if some are worn or damaged, as that makes sure that all would be new, and provide the best grip/traction, and they are really not that expensive compared to the cost of some shoes.

Hope this provided you some insight and satisfied your curiosity.

@rkj427

45-75 rounds a season! I am jealous.
I like the idea of having two pairs of shoes.  Part of the reason I put this question out there was I was heading for round  and noticed I had a few worn spikes.   Couldn’t fix before I played.  I’m sure it didn’t affect my game much, but it certainly was something on my mind.

Any spike brand/type you prefer?

These are what I use, they came on my shoes originally, and offer a lot of grip/traction and are very durable.

I rotate between pairs.  I love Puma shoes, Footjoy and Jordan.  The only ones with spikes are the Footjoys.  I swap out the spikes on those every other year.  The Pumas, Jordan’s are spineless.

I check mine pretty often because I am very hard on spikes and a firmly planted left foot at least is critical to my swing.  What I tend to do is change them all, as it's messy and a pain to deal with them multiple times on the same shoe.

I wear primarily spikeless shoes because I dread replacing spikes (or cleats) and feel guilty asking my locker room attendant to replace them.

I will replace spikes after 12-15 rounds, which may be once every 3 years due to the infrequency of wearing them.  The cleats on my old Jordan Flight Runner Golf shoes were nearly impossible to take off, and I almost threw them away, but someone convinced me not to.  So, I bought a Cleat Ripper, cleaned them, soaked them in a shallow pan, and got all but one cleat removed.  It took another 20 minutes using a screwdriver and vice grip to remove it finally.  Scrubbed the holes with a soapy brush and installed the new cleats.

Cleaning and replacing the spokes was satisfying and therapeutic, but I still hate doing it.  I may be able to flip these shoes for $120 after I remove the yellow oxidation from the toebox!

For those who struggle or just can't stand trying to change their spikes I highly recommend picking up the Softspikes tool. You don't have to try to clean out the two small holes to remove the spikes.  It even works on broken spikes. This is a ratchet tool with forward and reverse and has two tips one to remove the spikes and another to install. The removal tip is a sharp toothed circle. You just press it into the spike and twist. The install tip is the two prong. Both tips store in the handle. You can change out you spikes in a minute or two.

After every round, I use an air compressor at the golf course to clean the soles of my shoes, that is, also, when I check for spike wear. I replace individual spikes if they are worn out. I have had a cleat caddy for a while, but, if I run across a stubborn cleat, I will use my tongue and groove pliers (more grip and leverage) to twist it out.
