What’s your favorite piece of gear that isn’t a club?

Recommended Posts

I’m curious what piece of gear that isn’t a golf club has been your favorite? Can be something you’ve had forever or something you just got and has positively impacted your golfing expedience.

I’ll kick it off. For me it’s been getting an Apple Watch a couple years ago. Not inherently golf gear but it lets me use the GPS apps and track my score and basic stats without having to pull out my phone every shot. I know where I struggle and what to improve. It’s been very beneficial to my game.

For me it has to be my grandpa's old shoes.  After he passed away I would play a round in them on his birthday, but full leather shoes don't do too well in wet environments, so these days they just go in my bag when I am playing on his birthday.

That’s a really great way to honor and remember him. My grandpa passed away this past month and has an old bullseye putter that I’m inheriting. I might have to copy you if you don’t mind.

You should do that for sure!!! As an added bonus (I used a bullseye for a long time) you’ll easily see when you are twisting your grip or coming off plane with your stroke. 😆. Might even provide your grandpa with some add-on laughs…

Mine has to be my Clicgear 3.5+ pushcart that has been with me since 2019 and since I started counting my number of rounds in 2020, it's been in front of me for more than 300 rounds of golf on all kinds of terrain in all kinds of weather - awesome for holding the umbrella and keeping the bag cover in place.  Carries my drinks, rangefinder and phone running the SwingU app, not to mention 100% solid support for every golf bag that's been strapped to it.

I have to say my Clicgear 4 with Club Booster V2.  I just love walking even more since I don't have to push.  In fact, I wont walk with out it now.   I really like the Nike Air Hybrid 2 bag, but the cart is my favorite.

For me, it's easily the Garmin Fenix 7. It gives me distances, club suggestions, and tracks my score. It's much more convenient than using an app on my phone. I love all of the stats it gives me! (I just wish it could fix my slice. 😉

I have been tossing around the idea of getting a watch that can track my distances and give stats on strokes gained. The app I use is 18Birdies and it does a great job giving yardages and tracking basic stats like GIR, FWH, and PPH. Just lacks the very detailed stats such. Does the Garmin track that?

In first place, it's my sunscreen. I have a fairly pale complexion, so I burn pretty easily. So I have to make sure at least my face/ears/neck are good and lathered up before each round or range session.

A close second is the Shot Scope H4. I just started using it towards the end of this season, but I've found the information gathered so far to be very helpful. I look forward to keeping track of my stats this upcoming season to really see where my good and bad areas are so I can focus on them.

My vintage piece is an old Sucrets metal tin (think Altoids tin, but way older) my dad gave me when I first started playing some 35 years ago. I used to keep my tees and divot tool and other things in there. Now it's more of a just a mix of random things I've accumulated over the years - foreign coin, some old range coin, ball markers, etc. It's always in the bag, whether I keep anything needed in there or not.

I'd say my flask but someone beat me to it .....

I could say my GolfPad app as well, but somone beat me to that as well.

So I'm left with my cool divot repair tool that has a magnet with a ball marker and a hook for opening bottles.

Yes, Garmin shows these stats. Strokes gained is shown and split into Drive, Approach, Chip, and Putt. There are also Recovery and Bunker stats. Drive stats shows the percentage of tee shots that are left, center, or right of the fairway. This can be filtered by the different clubs you have used off the tee. If your shot is on the edge of the fairway and the watch thinks it was off the fairway, this can be changed, but I find it to be very accurate. Approach stats show accuracy of hitting the green. There is a distance accuracy graph and GIR stat on this section as well. Stats can be broken down by course. There you see your average score, GIR, putts per hole and drive accuracy as well. These are the free features. If you add the CT10 sensors (I do not have these.), you can also see more detailed chip and putt stats. I find that the watch automatically detects about 95% of the shots without these sensors. The watch struggles a bit with recognizing shorter swings.

I have the Fenix because I also hike and bike. If golf is your primary activity, there are several models that are more focused on just that.

A friend used the 18 birdies app for the last round we played together. After seeing my watch and the Garmin golf app and stats that it shows, he admitted that it's much better than the 18 birdies app.

The Fenix, Epix, and Instinct models all track golf, mountain biking, and skiing. They also have what they call Mountain Bike Dynamics. It gives you a score that you can use to compare runs that you make on the same course. Fenix and Epix also have offline ski maps and mapping for hiking and biking trails. Oh, one more thing. The battery life- mine (Fenix 7) gets about 18 days per charge!
