Will continue to rock my original Epic, 9 degree with stiff shaft.

Wouldn't mind testing the new Ping 10k and an AI Smoke. Ping gives a nice discount to military.  Another couple of years the Smoke ought to be almost affordable on Callaway preowned.

Still, the Epic is an old friend and not sure how much more I could get out of a new driver.

15-20 yards farther would probably do it.

Driver: Callaway Epic 9 degree, stiff (set at 10 degrees with the movable weight in the center}

FW: Callaway Epic 3,5, heaven wood w/ regular shaft (driver shaft in 3 wood, 3 wood shaft in 5 wood, 5 wood shaft in heaven wood, all three set at neutral plus 1 degree)

Hybrids: Callaway BB19 4,6,7 (4 set at neutral plus 1 degree and 6 and 7 set at neutral minus 1 degree for gapping purposes)

Irons: Callaway Rogue ST Max 8, 9, PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50,54,58

Ball: Titleist Pro V1, 1X, Vice Pro Plus or anything I find that day and try out for the fun of it (I haven't bought balls with my own money in at least 10 years)

I was keen and excited to get one of the new drivers in my bag for 2024. Off I went to the Golfbox driver fitting shop, took my Cobra LTDX , LinQ shaft, used this as my base line. Proceeded to test out all the new drivers, Ping, TM, Callaway and Darkspped, tried each head with at least 3 different shafts. End result my longest and most consistent driver was my Cobra LTDx , saved a bunch of cash by getting fitted.

Where golf is a way of life, and work but a distraction.

I currently am playing a Callaway Big Bertha Fusion.  I have a love/hate relationship with the driver.  I’ve been looking for a while now and I been leaning toward the Ping G430 Max 10k or the Titlelist TSR.  I am also considering the Cobra Darkspeed X

I got my hands on a Cobra AJ LS with 7.5° and made it work beautifully for me over the winter (well, from time to time I got the wobble and fire one or two away) and I am pretty sure it will stick in the bag, it´s just too good.

Nevertheless I get a Mizuno ST Max next week, just to try it … (we all know how this can end.. don`t we? )well and I could end up with a full Mizuno bag… not that I would have any benefit from this.

Bought this driver 2 years ago, really hit it well, ordered direct from Callaway in my specs , got it, played it, first round I was like nope, not working outdoors for me.

Returned to Callaway, they finally gave me a credit for full amount, turned around and ordered Rogue ST Max LS in my specs and was very happy from the start. The TD was nice, but I didn't perform with it.

Right now, I'm sticking with my Callaway Rogue ST Max LS as nothing stood out as significantly better when I did the Callaway, Taylormade and Cobra free fittings earlier this year. 9* head, adjusted -1 to 8*. Currently in -1/D to close the face slightly as the -1 opens it a little. Seems to be working ok for now.

image.png.3359c939c98181ddf859b306c1b4b74b.png

At my sim place I tried an Ai Smoke TD and really liked that. I found I hit that slightly more consistently and accurately than the Rogue doing some back to back testing (without a fitter or coach watching me, lol). But I'd need to do a bunch more testing and ideally take one to an outdoor range to try out.

Before buying anything else, I would want to give the Titleist and Ping drivers a go as I haven't done tests/ fittings for those brands.

After 5 years with an Epic Flash, shafted w/ an Evenflow Green 55g S shaft, I traded it in for a Paradym & kept the same 'transmission' - EvenFlow Green 55g S.

That shaft fits my swing & the Paradym has shown to be both longer & more accurate

More seriously, does anybody besides Mizuno make a smaller than 460 driver, now or within the last 3-4 years?  Mizu has a 440.  When I come out of the surgery boot, I have a 2021 PXG 0211 but need a stronger shaft than the A flex Evnflo rptide CB.  Til I re-shaft it, I also use a 2004 vintage Callaway 454 Ti on stock RCH 65 reg flex.

Honma makes a great 440 cc head you can get for next to nothing as their made for USA stock is being sold for like 80% off. Honma TR20 440

The TSi4 head is 435 cc

I picked up a Tour Edge Exotics E722 from their CPO site for less than $150.  Didn't get along with the Ventus Blue it came with so I now play it with one of two closeout shafts I got.

One is a 6.0 60g Project X Riptide LX and the other is a 6.5 Riptide MX.  Both are worthy shafts that had far too short of a life with PX, they play nothing like the stock Riptide that manufacturers use in product lines.  The LX is uniform in stiffness and fits my aggressive downswing well.   I'm normally high 90's to low 100's ss and was skeptical about the MX in 6.5 but it was on closeout for $40.  I think that a shaft can only be as stiff as it's weakest section so I took a chance due to the soft middle section in the MX.

The MX in 6.5 is interesting as the MX profile has a soft middle but in 6.5 the middle plays as stiff as the LX 6.0 middle (still with me?) with an ultra stiff tip and handle.  It really works well but is so stiff that prolonged use triggers my golfers elbow.  It's one of the straightest combos (with the E722 head) that I've ever owned.  Toe shots still go straight, the high moi of the E722 is no joke.  I'm thinking that the stiffness is allowing more power to be transmitted to the ball vs being absorbed by loading the shaft.  I'm probably wrong on that one, never the less the combo works for me.

Do you, or anybody else here, think thi Honma TR 20 440 driver head is still competitive in today's market, for a mid speed swing?  I have a few reg flex and a few senior flex drivers and 3 woods that work.  shorter than 3 wood, I can swing reg flex ok.  I am bargain hunting in driver-land.  I might grab a new TR 20 driver head on ebay and shaft it with a Riptide or an ACCRa shaft.
