Took the morning off and played with my dad and uncle at Tierra Verde. Played from the black tees which was 6975 yards and 73.8/135. Despite feeling I didn’t do anything great today my good scores continued and I shot 39/34 for a 73 so very happy with that.

It was so tough keeping my emotions neutral, not thinking about my score and just staying in the zone. Any time I did think of it for a second, I snapped out of it and kept making good swings.

It oddly felt like cheating playing from the whites but I have played this course about 6-7 times before and I think my best was an 82 from the whites. Next time, I'll play from the blue tees but it will probably be a while before I am back there. Still, I am thrilled shooting even par since I thought it would be YEARS before it would happen.

If the course name sounds familiar, Grant and Garret played The Crossing and made a video about it.

Played on Sunday - Had a very mixed round to say the least!

I'm going through a bit of a swing change at the moment and really trying to fire my left hip back on the downswing in order for my hands to clear it. When it happens it makes such a difference; shots are going straighter and now my drives are regularly at the 265+ mark and I averaged 283 yards across the round. I appreciate there is a bit of roll etc but the ball flight is so much better and consistently hitting drives past the 265 yard marker is something completely new to me! Just a shame my approach and short game wasn't as good so at least I have a new thing to work on. 

In terms of scoring, front 9 was average in that I bogeyed a few and made par on a few so nothing out of the ordinary. The back 9 is where the fun really took place 

Holes 10-12 went past without any real issues - again par and bogey going round and then onto the dreaded 13th...

It's not a long par 4 in that it's only around 350 yards. My course has a links style feel to it so lots of high rough off the fairway so if you're a yard in, you're in trouble. Anyway, took the driver out as had been hitting it well, BANG snap hook. Pulled well left and ended up about 50 yards into the rough. Never mind, first ball lost, we go again. BANG. Snap hook again! This time only about 15 yards into the rough but still not finding it. Took a 4 iron from the tee for my 5th shot before I'd even left the tee box! The hole has a valley about 30 yards short of the green so had to lay up but it took a bad bounce and ended up in the valley. Ended up with an 11 (ELEVEN) after walking off.

The 14th is a par 5 at 529 yards so need to use the driver even though I was a bit worried after what happened on the 13th and again, there's high rough out to the left. Thankfully I caught it well and hit a 288 yard drive - phew. Took my 4 iron to get it as far up there as possible. Flushed it and it left me with a small chip onto the green. Played a nice soft wedge and ended up about 14 feet away and sunk the putt for a birdie! Happy days!

Got on to the 15th with driver in hand just wanting to repeat what I just did on the 14th. Unfortunately it didn't happen and it wasn't a snap hook but it certainly was a pull into rough - lost ball again! Played my 2nd ball off the tee and left it nicely in the middle of the fairway with about 170 to go. Played my approach shot but for some reason sent this sailing left into more rough and another lost ball! 4 balls lost in 3 holes! I couldn't believe it. Anyway, cut the long story short: finished up with ANOTHER 11 (ELEVEN)!!

I also managed to lose my tee shot on the 16th, this time sending it out right (obviously over compensating for the previous 2 holes!) but by this point I didn't care anymore!

So after all that I finished up with 1 birdie, 4 pars, 8 bogeys and 5 D. Bogey+ which gave me 103 which after taking into account the 5 lost balls would have given me a 93 which I wasn't too sad about given the change in my swing which will take a little while to get used to and gain confidence in. Anyway, onto next week!

It was Weald of Kent, which is south of Maidstone. It was a little firm but not too bad at all really

Just back from a toasty 18 and found myself a tester for Vokey fitting app, so I’m sweaty AND stoked. 
 

Not sure if you can shoot a 100 and still feel like you played well, but truth be told I did, somehow, accomplish this unlikely feat. My drives were not spectacularly long but they were spectacularly accurate - 71% FIR. I have to say that my full bag fitting is finally paying off and my confidence in the clubs means my misses are not killing me. I have way fewer missed balls, and this was a narrow course too. 
 

Where my game gets a bit sketchy is around the greens, and I see you, Vokey wedge fitting and challenge you to lower my scores!

I can absolutely relate to shooting a high score but still feeling like I played well, so congrats! A full bag fitting is a must do in my book so again, congrats and it will get better!!! That you are a tester for the Vokey wedge app, I am jealous, but again, congrats! I have actually used the app then took the data to PGA tour superstore and I must say, spot on. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 48 and 52 degree SM10 wedges! Not as fond of my 56 TM MG4 TW grind, but it doesn't suck by any means. It spins 1000 revs more (10,000 to the Vokey 9000) than the 56 Vokey and that's the reason I have it. I cannot wait to read your review of the wedge fitting app and see how the wedges improve your game. Finally, congrats!!!

Ooo excellent intel, thank you! I admit to being a bit skeptical as I said in the intro after doing a full bag fitting - talk about exhausting! Just for drivers I swung enough to play 13, and I think my first go I “played” 27 in 3 hours until my fitter took pity on me and we finished up a few days later. I’m gonna have to learn more about these things, and FAST!

I suspect conditions are not that different in Kent from South West London, where I play. Enjoy your eagle moment. The thing I am finding with golf - nine months after first playing - is that I am still amazed at the round where I started with -1 at the end of the first four holes with two consecutive birdies, even though a few water-bound shots gave me a final score of 97. In contrast, my pB of 94 was less memorable for just being unremarkable bogey and double bogey golf. Go figure.

Thanks. I’m in South East London and a member at Sidcup so not that far from you I guess. The course in Kent was a little firmer than my home course. 
I seem to find that those “unremarkable” rounds are the ones where I score best too and it always surprises me

I had a good night in league last night - first time I can say that in what feels like a couple months. In general, I kind of sucked with my driver, but the misses were playable on all but one hole (two were so bad they ended up good). I ended up with 2 doubles (one bad tee ball, one second shot pulled into a pond), a bogey, a birdie, and 5 pars for a +4 39. By my count, this is the 3rd time this season I had a par on each of the 3 par 3's (even though I didn't hit any of those greens). My chipping has been very bad of late, but while warming up, I just got back to the basics and made myself not try to do anything too cute during the round. It helped that I didn't short-side myself at all, so the temptation to get too cute was not as great. Distance with irons was very good all night, even if my dispersion cone with most of them seems to be wider than the greens I was trying to hit. I've also gone back and forth between my StrokeLab putter and old Ping lately. I put the old Ping in my bag yesterday and it didn't disappoint. I made a lot of 4-6 footers for par and a 20-25' birdie.

Friday, I got out by myself to a super nice course, and was lucky to be playing alone too. I decided to play the tips as I wasn't impacting anyone else if I struggled. Driver was iffy for the first few holes, but irons were solid and short game was on fire. I had TWO chip ins with my 7 iron and 3 birdies over all. I bled some strokes at the end, but wound up with an 80 overall.

Sunday I shot a 78 with @MattF at Ironwood, which is becoming a local favorite of mine. Again I had 3 birdies overall and had little trouble down the stretch. Never going to complain about breaking 80 though.

July has been a Month.   Right after the 4th, I went hunting a new driver (used) and ended up getting fitted for a Wilson Staff Dynapower (TI) driver (hat tip to Maple Hill Golf in Michigan).  A couple of weeks later, I went for some "equipment shopping therapy" to the PGA SuperStore, and came home with a Wilson Infinite putter (The "L" ) Model.    In the last 2 weeks since adding both of these clubs to the bag, I have had rounds with 5 birdies (once), 4 birdies (3 times)-- and yesterday I shot my 2nd ever EVEN PAR round... 35 37 (72).   Not bad for a 65 year old,  8 HDCP.     Can't say enough good things about the Wilson equipment.  I have gamed 3 or 4 different drivers over the last  2-3 years (Ping, Mizuno, Srixon).   This Dynapower is superior in pretty much every way.   And the putter has been surprisingly  effective, in that its the first milled putter (no insert) I have played since the Ray Cook, 1990s era.

I shot 43 had a triple on 11 and a double on 17. Birdied 18 again. 11 is my nemesis, I have tried different clubs to just keep the ball in play but this hole bites me every time. I am going to try a hybrid next time, wish me luck.

Last round was good....75 at local county course in Racine, WI.  Play white tees at 6,450 yards.  Only 1 birdie, lots of pars.  Best round of the year so far.  Hit em Straight!

Today I played Holliday Farms, in Zionsville, Indiana (USA). It's a newer local private club with a Pete Dye-designed course winding through an exclusive community. Pete and Alice Dye actually drew up the designs for the course, in this location, in the 90s (Alice was related to the Holliday family and they both knew the land well), but it only opened in 2021. As a Dye course, the greens are tough and are well protected by either bunkers (lots of them!) or water... or both. Somehow I only hit one bunker all day and that was a fairway bunker on the FIRST hole! The following pics give you an idea of the design of some holes there...

I thought this was a pretty cool and interesting way of incorporating a fairway bunker.lol

This was my first time playing the full 18 and first time seeing the back 9. The course is in fantastic condition and you have to plot your way around the course- there are very few 'grab the driver and let it rip' holes. Fairways were firm and rolled well considering we've had a decent amount of rain and the greens were quick enough (particularly flat and downhill) and rolled straight and pure.

I shot a solid 82 (+10) from the gold/blue tee combo (slope rating 141/71.7, 6450yds).

In terms of stats for the round, I was really happy with performance off the tee overall. 11/14 fairways is solid. After a couple of misfires early on, the driver, 3W and 3H put in a great shift! Driver was particularly satisfying on the back nine. Just solid straight and baby-fade tee shots to the middle of the fairway. A couple of times I picked the wrong club or line due to lack of familiarity and that cost me a shot or two, but I hit the shot I had chosen most of the time, which is a welcome change!

Being rather self-critical despite a solid round there... GIR stats could be better and putting was tough. I mostly play on a slow muni, so switching to fast and heavily contoured greens is a tough ask. I was actually happy with my green reading and putting lines. Just the weight/speed that was a challenge! I put my putting under too much pressure by not getting close to the pin often enough with approaches and chips. Too many 20ft+ first putts and I had to hole a good few putts in the 4-6ft range for par. 

It was a really fun round and I'm glad we walked it. 8.5 miles and 16000 steps in the bank. Even some heavy rain towards the end of the front nine (with tornado sirens briefly sounding in the distance- at our neighboring town- and the threat of thunder storms) didn't manage to spoil the round. My birdie was during the heaviest part of the downpour. Maybe I need to think about putts less, as with that one I quickly eyed the green, walked up and holed an 18-20 footer!lol

Can't wait to go back and see if I can crack 80 round there!

Played this afternoon at Reedsburg Country Club in Wisconsin, and played very well considering it was my first time on this course.

Course was in absolutely fabulous shape with greens that rolled true and fast.

Only used my driver on 2 holes, mostly 3 wood off the tee except for the par 3's.

Almost birdied both par 3's on the back, lipped out the birdie putt on the 2nd par 3.

And my shot(s) of the day both came on the 17th hole. 410-yard Par 4, downhill off the tee, but uphill into the green. Wind in our face, I hit driver and 6 iron to about 15 feet left of the flag, but the left to right breaking putt just missed on the high side.

Shot 78 total. 40/38 with 9 of 14 fairways, 11 of 18 greens, and the fairways I missed were no more than a few feet off. A lot of dogleg holes on this course and keeping the ball in play was critical to scoring.

I am glad you were able to enjoy my home course and your round, fantastic scoring! Sad to have missed you, that is for sure. On that last picture, you were right across the way from my home! From where you were standing to take that photo, our house is across the cul-de-sac and you most likely saw a white Chevy in the driveway. If you're able to make it to the area again, I definitely will not miss you!

We ended up going for dinner at the club in the evening for my wife's birthday and I played "daddy caddy" as my boys called it for two holes of goof around golf before dinner. That was just before 6pm. I bet we didn't miss you coming in by much!

Great round @Indy_Oz!  Holliday Farms looks great and tough.  One quibble though.  How can you share an Indy area Pete Dye course and not include pics of railroad ties?  Lol.

Didn't realize railroad ties were a Pete Dye thing! Guess I haven't played that many Dye courses and nobody mentioned it before.lol

How did I play today?? Well, I played 9 holes at my regular course before work, and on the 3 par-3s I went 6, 6, 4...the rest was actually OK! #facepalm

I played Tecolote Canyon, a par 58 executive, after work yesterday and shot another personal best of 1 over par. 5 birdies, 4 bogeys and a double. The double sucked since my ball nearly plugged in the thickest rough on the course and had to chop it out. It flew over the green into more thick rough on the short side and I two putted after chipping on. I shook it off and was very close to an ace on the next hole. Hit an 8 iron 145 uphill and spun it back to a foot. My swing feels so much better dropping my hands in closer on the downswing.

You got it.  Now that you know to look for them, they will be like blue minivans.  You will see them everywhere on Dye designs.
