Popular Post CarlH
So, yesterday I reported a good round. Today, someone else showed up. After a poor drive, I just missed a birdie putt on #1 and was thinking positive thoughts for the round. Hole #2 and it got ugly fast. Front side, I have a birdie, a triple, and 3 double-bogies for a 45. Managed to recover a little bit on the back with a 40, but it was one of those rounds where "if it can go wrong, it did". -1 on the par 3 holes and +3 on the par 5 holes...really? You're not supposed to bogie or worse on par 5 holes! Sigh. On the plus side, I maintained a positive attitude throughout the day, won the $5 partner bet by one shot, and relaxed after the 100 degree weather in really smokey air with an ice cold root beer. Popular Post chisag
... I seem to be stuck on even par so no complaints since I am instituting a swing change. Last 2 rounds were 4 birdies and 4 bogies, then 3 birdies and 3 bogies. Played today and sure enough 2 birdies and 2 bogies with my Z Forged MB's and the very solid ball striking continued, although more pushes than pulls today. 2 times I hit to an adjacent fairway and was able to save par both times. On a tough par 4 I pushed my drive leaving me 210 and hit a blind shot with my 2 iron onto the green leaving a 30 footer that somehow found the hole after bouncing like Chinese Checkers on the recently aerated greens. The only time the MB's hurt me was on a 185 yd slightly uphill par 4 where I hit a 5 iron to a back pin and instinctively knew it was probably not enough club and over swung coming up at impact and hitting it a little thin traveling on line but 15 yds short and just on the front. The Cobra MIM 5 iron would have been much closer as thin shots aren't as penal. Course was slow as it rained last night and poured on us for about 10 minutes and goodness knows Phoenix can use the rain so happy to get soaked for a little while. ... All in all I am very pleased with the progress of the swing change. Seems I hit either really good shots or really bad shots off the tee but the irons are much more reliable, although I will still hit a wild shot every now and then. I have also started hitting a 2 iron stinger with a slight draw and is a real fairway finder and reliable lay up for a 2nd shot on a par 5 I can't reach in two. Had a downhill lie today and I tend to hit that shot poorly but slightly back in my stance and an abbreviated follow through sent it low and straight. I think this shot will be very valuable this winter when the fairways are hard and fast. I am posting more rounds than normal as I thought doing so in the middle of a swing change might be of interest to some of you. GolfSpy TCB
Played 9 last night.... woes continue with the iron approach shots (0.0 GIR last night - including another sacrifice to the water gods). But as a silver lining... I am getting A LOT of pitching and chipping practice in during rounds!! A 40 yard flop shot to 3 feet over water, over a trap to a tucked pin and 2 sand saves were the highlight of the evening. I wish LOL. The swing change is not as difficult with my irons as I am swinging in control but swinging my driver and even my 3 wood of the tee has mixed results so far. Quick refresher: I have always had my body follow my arms. PT specializing in golf said because of my bad back I have shortened my turn over time and that was causing problems with my body getting ahead of my arms on the downswing. Seems the body wants to protect itself so it decided to start the downswing all together instead of the lower body leading and that carried over to some of my non stiff back days so it seemed like a hit or miss shooting par or under one day and feeling in sync, then mid high 70's the next and everything seemed like a struggle. ... So I have changed to my body leading my arms which gives me a better turn and I am hitting the ball very solidly again. But as always with a swing change it takes awhile to completely incorporate the change. Sometimes my body moves too quickly on the downswing causing big pushes and some pulls. Pushes with a normal swing a little out iff sync and pulls when I know my body is ahead and try to instinctively save it with my hands. The interesting part is I am hitting those pushes dead center of the face, which was not the case with my old swing on off days. Of course that center contact means it can go a long way off line. Thankfully I am in the desert and other than water hazards there are not a lot of trees so even on the other side of an adjacent fairway leaves me a shot to the green. ... I have no doubt the Big Miss will disappear as I become more comfortable with the change, other than the once in a blue moon bad swing that everyone suffers from. russtopherb, CarlH, GolfSpy_SHARK and 6 others 9 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Popular Post Grand Stranded
I played in my Tuesday league the other day and it was more of the same… intense heat 3 blowup holes which resulted in me shooting 90. My struggles continue. This post isn’t about me though, it’s about my cart partner. He’s one of the better players at my club. He started out with 6 pars and had a good look at birdie on almost every hole. Then his putts started dropping, and he birdied 7,8,9 for a 33. His back 9 wasn’t as good, but he only had one bad hole. Shanking(!!!) a second shot from a muddy lie into a waste area on 12, and then on the par 5 15th he hit his drive so well he reached a bunker a lot of short hitters are hoping to clear with their second shot. He only had 160 to the green but pushed it into a thicket of trees (we thought) that border the OB line. After looking, he went back and hit again from the bunker. After he hit, the guys moved their cart from where they parked to help look for his ball, and ugh, there it was, sitting under their cart. He would’ve had a 20 yard chip to the green. He birdied 18 to shoot 70, but wow, what could have been… His bag setup was one of the more interesting I’ve seen also. 10.5* Epic Speed driver, Epic Flash 5 wood and HeavenWood, 26* and 30* G410 hybrids, 7-aw apex ‘21 irons, a chipper, yes, a chipper that he can hit up to 90 yards, Vokey 54*, a 58* Cleveland Sure Out and a Cameron blade. Obviously, he knows what works for him, and marches to his own drummer. I really enjoyed playing with him and hearing him explain his thoughts on equipment and course management. Popular Post chisag
... OK, now it is just getting silly. I can't remember shooting exactly par 2 days in a row let alone 3 and having the same amount of birdies and bogies. So the chances of 4 in a row are like jlukes waking up and magically having the correct shafts in his MIM irons. ... I had to do a Voice Session for Humana today and thought I wouldn't get to play. But finished 1/2 hr early and was able to juuuust get to the course for a 3:56 tee time. Hard to start off well when you jump out of the car and run to the first tee with a new swing and this running through your head "And you may be able to save on dental, vision and hearing expenses because coverage is included with most Humana Medicare Advantage plans" ... Same ole same ole with good and bad swings. Sitting on 1 under coming into #17 a 189 yd par 3, I pushed my usually reliable 4 iron hugging the right side that has mounds feeding the ball back onto the green. Mine was about 2 yards on top of the mounds and just sat there. Only chance was to kill a LW onto the fringe and hope it stopped before hitting a tier. It did just that stopping a couple inches from rolling another 25 feet but I missed the putt from 8 feet for a bogie and back to even par with 3 bogies and 3 birdies. Really?!? #18 is a shortish par 5 but plays uphill and when inside 100yds you can't see the green and just the top of the flag. I had 85 figuring it played like 90 a perfect full 58* wedge. Musta been more like 95 because I hit it well and thought it was close but walking up to the green it was just on the fringe leaving me about a 12 footer. Kinda laughing on the inside knowing a par gives me 4 days in a row of shooting par I rolled in the 12 footer to finish 1 under and break the "spell". ... Popular Post edingc
- 39/42 = 81 (+9) - 4/15 FIR - 8/18 GIR (2 birdies) - 34 Putts (3 3-putts, 10 2-putts, 5 1-putts) First round worth posting about in a while. Although I didn't feel like I played all that well, I grinded out some bogeys on the front and went birdie-par-par-par to finish the round with four straight one-putts. Wheels temporarily fell off from No. 9 green to No. 14 tee. Hit a beautiful drive and iron combo on No. 9 to leave a 20-foot eagle attempt. Hit it a touch hard, rolled over the edge and went six feet past. Lipped out the birdie. Three-putt par. Followed with double, bogey, bogey, three-putt bogey and double after pulling my tee shot out of bounds left. Biggest victory I'm taking from today is not giving up after No. 14's tee shot. Played pretty solid golf after that and even got a drive out to 303 yards with a little wind help on No. 17. Jonny_Crash
Rough morning today. It was beautiful out, but a 30 mph wind. There was very little that went well today, but that's how it goes at my level. I was fighting my push all day and didn't really get my clubhead closed all day. Lost 5 balls (2 on one hole). First drive of the day was a hook into the woods. Next two drives were pushes. I did manage a par on the 4th with a great up and down. Put the driver away on the 5th, snap hook with the driving iron off the tee... second shot was beautiful.... right into the woods. Then I also bladed the approach into the woods. Putting was bad too, couldn't figure out the speed. 22 putts over 9 holes. End result was a 56. I did hit one brilliant shot on 7 (340 yard par 4) with my 3U. I laced a baby draw about 260 right in the middle of the fairway. Approach shot to 8 feet (three putt...fml). It felt good to get that shot in play. Popular Post Siamese Moose
Eight weeks ago I cracked a vertebrae, and three weeks ago got hit by a golf ball in almost the same spot. This meant that I haven't been able to work out, and at 61 it's been frightening how fast my strength and fitness melts away. All of my recent rounds have suffered at the end as I run out of gas, and in too many cases I get to the late holes just needing to stay steady to break 80, and I haven't been able to get it done. Tuesday I finished bogey-double-bogey to shoot 82. Today I stood on the 17th tee knowing I could finish bogey-bogey and break 80, so I promptly hit my tee shot (par 3) two zip codes to the right. I was fortunate to find the ball, and doubly fortunate to get away with double, but on the 18th tee I needed par to break 80. I hit a straight but short drive that found the lone wet spot in the fairway to plug, so no roll. The approach is about a half club uphill, but I had about a half club tailwind. All those recent scars made me take an extra club (7i), which I proceeded to hit as well as anything for the entire round. Fortunately I stayed on the back of the green, but faced a 30' downhill slider that I had grave doubts about two putting. But after my purest iron of the day I had my purest putt, and made birdie for 78. I don't know if I've turned a corner on finishing rounds after just one good occurence, but I'll sleep better tonight. Rickp
7:00 am on a WET, CPO nasty course. Greens were really nice but understandably slow due to water. Seemed like the 4 of us were in neutral until 6th hole. I wasn’t hitting irons badly but it’s tough hitting off a wet sponge for 9 holes. Tropical Storm on its way so more water problems. Ended up +6 for the 9 holes, yuck. Popular Post CarlH
Opening day of the club championship and I'm off to a disappointing showing. On the opening par 5, I hit a fair drive that found the rough and I hit a great 5W to 80 yards from the pin -- and that's when it started -- blade my SW 15 yards over the green, a poor chip from there ran off the front of the sloping green, putted from the fringe, followed by a 2 putt....Great start! By the end of the front 9, I'm already +7 (6 handicap). Take a triple on par 5 #12, three 3 putts on the round, and numerous poor chips, along with natural course bad luck (plugging into the side of green side sand traps twice) and I limp in with a very disappointing score of 85. Not an excuse, but the course superintendent did exactly what I expected after a month of slow greens as he cross cuts and rolls the greens speeding them up to how they should have been all season. In any case, my speed control was off and I ran several putts 3 feet by the hole. Made most of those but, as stated earlier, I did have 3 3 putts. Not sure how many I had for the entire round, but I'm sure it was more than normal. Still 2 days of play left and, although I have no false illusions of winning my division (super senior 65+), I am looking to return to form and play decent golf for the final rounds. Popular Post TBS
I got bit today... by the double bogey bug. 4 today?!? Hole 1 with one of my best drives immediately followed by chunky pitch, chip over the green, and two putt. I tried to block out the negative thoughts because they were strong. I grinded through the front with a 44. I thought I was headed for an 87/88 round, but I kept fighting on the back and put together a decent round. 83 - 44/39 - 10 FIR - 9 GIR - 32 putts - 11 chips - 2 penalties I was trying to be a hero today. Instead of taking my medicine and punching out, I tried some hero shots. A few chips could have been closer but overall I like the direction my game is trending. Sub 80 is out there and I'm really close. Today I had fun with friends and left feeling grateful that I get to play golf. cnosil, Kenny B, GolfSpy_SHARK and 11 others 14 Quote M6 12* Oban Kiyoshi Purple 65g stiff TS2 16.5* HL Oban Kiyoshi Purple 75g stiff G410 Hybrid 19* Tour stiff i210 KBS tour stiff 4-GW 54* RTX Zipcore 58* glide 3.0 TP Black Copper Juno 34in Oncore elixr or Snell MTBx

Popular Post Ben_Howell34
Played at Kelly Plantation on a work trip today in Destin, FL. It was “The Match” of our office, Alabama grads vs Auburn grads (I’m team Bama). Did a modified stableford scoring and we whipped the AU team pretty good. And that’s good because if you know anything about this rivalry you know there is a ton of trash talking! Course was really fun, had some great holes on it. Personally I shot at 87, 44/43 and hit 5/14 FIR and 5/18 GIR. Had a few of each that were right off as well but still need big improvement in those two categories. Was able to card 3 birdies which was fun, with one being about a 60 foot putt on their signature hole (number 4) and another being about a foot from an ace. Those birdies were a big part in the team win which was fun. But on the other hand had 5 doubles. Did not drive as consistently as I did last time out (had two penalties off the tee) but hit irons a little better which was encouraging given the lessons. I will say the heat and humidity was brutal which did not help the grip on the driver. If I can make sure to limit myself to bogey on holes and not drop meaningless shots that will help me stay in the mid to low 80s and beyond which is my short term goal for now. cnosil, Shankster, MattF and 10 others 9 4 Quote Radspeed Driver 10.5* Radspeed 3W 14.5* Stealth 4H 22* JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro 4i-PW RTX Zipcore Wedge 52* Mid Bounce RTX Zipcore Wedge 56* Mid Bounce Kirkland Signature KS1 Putter
