Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
17 hours ago, sirchunksalot said: I played a round with @Tom the Golf Nut today at his home course while doing a comparison between the Stewart Q Follow and MotoCaddy trolleys for the Official Forum Member Review. I was worried it was going to be stormy today, but we were blessed with wonderful weather and only had to deal with a couple of minor sprinkles. I didn't keep score, today was about the fellowship between fellow members and having fun while walking his beautiful, hilly course. If I were to guess, I would say I shot just north of 100. My driver was better today than it has been in a long time, I hit several fairways and most of my offline shots weren't penalizing. I lost 3 balls, one in a gully and one on a shanked iron shot. My approach game was good, I hit or was close to several greens in regulation. I hit a couple of greens on par 3's one to about 12 feet where I three putted. I did get a kick watching a group we were letting play through putt on one of the greens where they were above the hole and were tapping the ball and it was rolling over 30 feet past. It was a devious hole location. After they finished they asked if we had the same problem and we said nope. We both two putted. My putter was money on most holes. I did three putt a couple of times, but for the most part I was lagging them into make range. Tom played well and it was a joy watching him hit beautiful driver shot after beautiful driver shot. My shot of the day came on the 18th where I hit a wedge to the back of the green leaving a 35 foot downhill left to right putt. I told Tom I would just sink it just to finish right. The ball took off on my line and looked like it was going to miss right until it took a left turn at the end and went in. Thanks again, Tom for having me up. I thoroughly enjoyed the golf and fellowship with you. It was a very enjoyable round playing with @sirchunksalot. It started off on a good note. We met up with the Pro and he was impressed with both of our electric trolleys. We told him we were testing them against each other for MGS. Then he didn't charge a guest fee and said to go play and have fun. That was a very nice gesture to start the day. Especially after Jason's almost 3 hour drive. We had fun both playing golf and testing the trolleys against each other. If the Motocaddy had the follow mode it would be golden. I liked the feature of the follow mode but it was a little weird sounding on the Stewart when it would get on and let off the gas so to speak to keep the proper distance. I did notice a small problem with Jason's ball position when teeing off with the driver. One small adjustment and he was splitting fairways. I can tell he has been working on his game since the last time we played together. I saw the improvement and he was squeaking out a few pars today as well as hitting his driver longer. It was nice to see him having fun. For the most part it was bogey, a few pars with 2 holes that were a double and 1 triple. So I put him roughly mid 90's. Considerating the course is very different than what he is used to, his score was good. He closed out the round with a great 35 foot down hill putt. Then when we were done we were told that there were a lot of leftovers from Sunday Brunch to go help yourself. Winner winner chicken dinner as they say. Pimento cheese croissants, French toast, O'Brian potatoes, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit. Now there's a happy ending to a round of golf. I was glad to see that Jason made it home safe and sound. I'll bet the leg muscles will be sore tomorrow. Walking 18 with big hills. Everything around me is hilly so I'm used to it. Sorry flat lander. PS: I finially lost the Maxfli Tour golf ball. For the life of me, I don't know how. I had a chip out of the left rough to get back to the fairway. The chip was executed as I wanted it. It went to the center of the fairway and then left over the hill to run down to the bottom. Leaving 100 yards in on a par 5. Alf. S
I really am all over the place with my scoring at the moment. 17 strokes between my best and worst over the last 2 weeks. Just outside the prizes at the Gents Open at my home course came 8th with top 6 getting prizes and 10th in the scratch. Putting was a real struggle to start with. I had a bad putting day on Tuesday at Broomieknowe where I couldn't read or drop a putt. Did some work at home moving the ball forward in my stance and it made it worse, 3 putted 2, missed a 3 footer for par at 3, over every putt I felt I could miss. Moved it back toward the back foot and started holing more. Although stats don't show it drove the ball well, suffering a little from a push with my shorter irons that I need to work on. One funny on Tuesday, on the last I said to my playing partner. "My Skycaddie says there is a bunker at 242 yds, can you see it?" "No" Driver middled over the top of the trees. "Oh that bunker" as it bounced and rolled right into it. My playing partner then did the exact same thing. I didn't have any of my usual pull hooks and watching the ball flying straighter was a real treat. My legs are feeling it today. The calves, hamstrings, and glutes aren't used to that kind of hiking. I think the worst part was stopping for gas after my body cooled off. I got out of the car and had to waddle to the pump. I made it around the car and realized I hadn't pushed the gas cap release inside the driver's door. Had to waddle back over and go to the pump again. That breakfast buffet was fire! I've never tried pimento cheese and those croissant's looked so good I had to try one. Yummy! Other than the leg soreness today, walking with the electric trolley didn't exhaust or wind me bad at all compared to pushing. cnosil, cksurfdude, Tom the Golf Nut and 6 others 7
Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I played out at Silver Ridge in Oregon yesterday. It's a course we really like but it's almost an hour west of us so we haven't been there recently. My improved play continues although my putter was incredibly suspect. To my defense the greens had a lot of tricky breaks and were very scuffed up (lots of wildlife). I had six birdie opportunities and came away with three pars and three bogeys. While I left a bunch on the table, I was happy with my ball striking. The six GIRs is a new personal best and other than a total flub on the first hole, my driver was good, although it couldn't decide between going straight or drawing back. Everything else was good too, I even hit a couple of solid five irons which hasn't been done in ages. Next things to work on are alignment and course management (tried a few really risky shots). Owen's driver had been suspended in favor of the 3 wood off the tee, which might be his most reliable club. He otherwise played well enough, beating me by one stroke. I shot (+19) 91. JFish350
I was lucky to play twice over the weekend. Saturday was a little tough from a double header football game on Thursday and another Friday night. I chose to take a cart even though its a pretty easy walking course. I don't like being late tot he course. My wife and showed up in plenty of time to our in-laws. Playing a private course and my MIL is the member. Anyway we get to their house an hour before tee time. She comes walking out of her room "your early". I was like WTF and thought ok we'll have 30 min to warm up. Nope arrived 10 min before tee time, hit about 8 balls on the range. I noticed the ball going right (slice), I chocked it up to being in a hurry. First hole slice right in the trees, crap. That was the theme of the day. Ended up shooting 94 and struggled with right fade slices all day. Not my usual miss. Sunday was Pumpkin Ridge. A little more rested but carted it again as my wife doesn't like to walk 18 holes of golf. I told my wife the night before we are getting tot he course minimum 1 hour early. Got a good warm up in all good for the most part. 1st tee shot just barely faded a touch in the rough, no biggie, Hit 2nd shot on the green to about 25'. I'm thinking ok doing alright, them 3 jacked. Move onto hole 2 par 3 154 pushed my tee shot right. There's a little creek that was dry but my ball stayed up, ok chip on and take the par. I fricken chipped in for bird WHOOP WHOOP. I was missing birdie putts but I'm ok with that as it as long as I make the par, most of would be right. Ok stay calm will be the theme for today. Ended up shooting 42 on our front 9 which they had us start on the back 9 today. I had no idea what I shot on the front till my brother in law said something on about hole 13-14. The back 9 was different, not sure why thinned a few gap wedges that cost me 4-5 strokes and fatted another that put me in a island bunker. I call an island bunker one that has tall wispy grass island of death in the middle of it. I wish I would have taken a picture of where my ball finished. which was about 6" just in front of a big ol' grassy lip that was 8"-12" tall. I had about 30 yards to the green. I couldn't go sideways as the ball would have been either down a big fricken hill or what I felt to far below my feet to not go into a creek or the woods. I really needed my 60* but left in the cart when started walking down the fairway, cart path only on this hole and of course I was on the wrong side of the fairway. Anyway, I take my 56* open it up take a swing and it clears the big wispy grass (YES) headed towards the hole ok just get on the green someplace please. Nope came up just short and into the same bunker just on the other side of the island of death. Normal bunker shot out and two put for dbl. Ended up shooting 51 on the back. for a 93. Weather was great company was awesome and fun was had by all. Two really fun days even though the golf wasn't perfect. Popular Post Grand Stranded
Tomorrow we start our annual Tuesday Members league championship tournament called The Barefoot Cup. We play the next 3 Tuesdays on each of our Resort courses. The 36 top money winners qualify, no cut, with a gross and net winner. I’ve come close a few times, but have never won. Hopefully that changes this year? I hope I’m not over thinking this, but since I’m thinking my best shot is the net, I’m moving back a tee to get 3 extra strokes tomorrow. I played the same course and tees Saturday and shot an 87 net 74 (it’s a par 71 course) and I’ll probably need to do better tomorrow as that was only good for 6th place out of 20 players in the A flight and didn’t cash. I’m playing off 13 so I’m sort of in no man’s land. It would be a miracle if I could string together 3 rounds low enough to take gross, but this tournament isn’t flighted and there are a lot of high caps from the B flight playing, so it won’t be easy to get net either. This is the only time all year the two flights are together and those guys can put up some ridiculously low net scores. In the A anything around net par will usually cash, but in the B it’s nothing to see 5-6 guys net in the mid 60’s If I had to play in the B flight during the year, I wouldn’t bother with any league play. Their scoring is one of the great mysteries in our club… the same guys seem to go very low every week, yet their strokes never go down… go figure. Popular Post mikeanthony
Made the 90 min drive up to True Blue today for an early morning tee time, and for y’all South Carolinians, the course is in great shape. It’s a must play right now. Haven’t hit a golf ball for 11 days until this morning at the range, and with new irons in play as well … 48/46 - 94. Back-to-back triples (3 triples overall) where both holes involved the walk of shame to and from greenside bunkers on each end, are what killed my round. The new putter was money … 32 putts on the round isn’t too much to cheer about. But had 3 putts that just burned the edges and my lag putting was really good today. No 3-putts as well. Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights today. Had a few more chunky shots than I would like but otherwise I didn't play too bad. It's funny how things go in cycles. Now that the rest of my clubs are coming online, my chipping has fallen apart. Actually not falling apart so much as I'm wussing out on everything. Putting too. Driver was solid today. Every drive was 230+ including this mama-jamma: First time over 300! To be fair, it hit the cart path just past the bridge...but details, amirite?? Then I ruined the opportunity by mis hitting two chips in a row! Either way, a good round for both Owen and myself. He went 44 (+8) and I shot 46 (+10). Popular Post Sluggo42
39/36 with a double bogie on each side, but thankfully 4 birdies. Left 2 or 3 strokes out there with a few really poor short putt misses. I have a tendency to pull or “yank” the straight ones, or if they turn to the right, I tend to push them. Popular Post ncwoz
Played 9 at a course I haven't played in a while. Short game continues to get me out of some jams, and my partial swing approaches were dialed. Stuck 2 70 yard lob wedges to less than 5 feet for 2 birdies. A thinned gap wedge led to one double, a pulled 5 iron forced me to chip out backwards and led to a bogey, and then I made an aggressive decision to thread the needle with my driver on the last hole and it found the woods. I was fortunate to find it tho, I chopped it out and bogied but that would have almost assuredly have been a double or more of I had to play my provisional. All in all, 38! Popular Post MaxEntropy
Strange night in league last night - I struggled off the tee on the first 5 holes, resulting in too many wasted shots from having to play from the trees. I was +6 after 5 with the lone par on a par 3. Then on the rest of the holes, it seems I figured out how to hit a driver again and finished with 4 pars with a couple decent looks at birdie to finish with a 41 (+6), which is right at my league handicap. Since our season is officially over and all we are playing for is skins, this is the time I will try shots I wouldn't otherwise try, just to see if I can pull it off. Last night on our second hole, I was in the trees on the right (approx. at the yellow dot below) and was about 110 from the front. I had some room over the trees in front of me (they aren't that tall), but I had to keep the ball a little lower due to some limbs hanging over me. I decided to try to flight down about a 3/4 8 iron. It actually worked (almost) perfectly, except I pulled it and it bounced about where the red dot is and kicked into the pond, so I walked off with a double. Under normal conditions, I would have done some low punch and tried to take double out of the equation, but it was kind of fun to try the shot. I also decided to give the Chromesoft X LS a little more play to see if my opinion about it had changed from Saturday. It feels very firm to me, sounds like I'm hitting a Topflite or Pinnacle, and feels pretty harsh on slightly off-center strikes, but overall it didn't perform badly. I do like the triple track, but after I lose it, I don't see myself trying it again. edingc, MattF, Rickp and 10 others 13 Quote Driver: Epic Speed 9* (set -1) MMT 70X 3W: Tour B JGR Recoil 760ES 3H, 4H: Tour B JGR 19*, 23* Recoil 780ES 4-AW: Tour B JGR HF2 Modus3 Tour 105 SW: RTX Zipcore Black Satin 54* LW: TAIII Black 58* Putter: Scottsdale TR Senita Bag: BigMax Dri Active Lite Ball: TP5x or AVX (yellow) Pushcart: BigMax iQ+ Testing Complete, Final Review Posted: Sub70 TAIII Forged Wedges
Popular Post Kenny B
Went to the course to practice, but the weather was pretty nice so I decided to walk 9 holes. I only had to wait 20 minutes to get out with 3 guys who were all older than me... and that's old!!! One guy was 87 and hit the ball really well; been playing since he was 13. My driver was really acting up; never hit the sweet spot, but kept the ball in play and never had anything worse than a bogey. Good thing everything else was working OK. Missed an ace on #4... cksurfdude, Vegan_Golfer_PNW, Syks7 and 13 others 16 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
Popular Post Sluggo42
39/37 One worse today than yesterday- but ironically one less double, and 2 fewer birdies, and apparently, one more bogie… it’s interesting how playing 3-4 times a week, and the same course, with the same gaggle of guys, that the scores start seeming the same- but getting there differently each day- one day you birdie a hole, next day you bogie it. One day you’re driving well, next day the irons are rolling, next day the putter is hot… I suppose it would be boring if it was the same every time eh? Popular Post Grand Stranded
I wish I could regale everyone with how I dominated the field yesterday in the first round of my league championship, but that’s not what happened. The first 8 holes went really well, then I just lost it. Everything snowballed on me after I hit my drive OB on 9. I started pressing, trying to get back strokes that were already lost. I’ve played enough competitive golf to know better than to do that, but I got caught up in the heat of the moment. It turned out two of my 3 playing companions finished on top after the first round, and I got sucked into trying to keep up. I’ve been playing pretty well lately, and over confidence probably hurt me more than it helped. Again, I should know better. Long story short, I put up a nifty 92 net 78. I’m way down the list going into the second round in both gross and net. A part of me wants to just withdraw, but I’d like to think I’m not that guy, so I’ll try to grind it out the next two rounds and see where I end up. It really sucks shooting yourself out of contention on the first day though. Popular Post Grand Stranded
If there’s one good thing that came out of yesterday, it was the fact that my swing is really coming around with my irons. I struggled for a while with that part of my game, and it took a while to find a set that worked. If I can just put my ego aside and not look for sleek and shiny, the Halos seem to be perfect for me. They’re not sexy, but they have really helped me a lot. I mentioned that I moved back a tee yesterday, and even though 6300 yards is really pushing me to the brink distance wise, a lot of my mishaps were approach shots into the green which went a half to a full club long. It’s hard to get upset when you’re hitting the ball so pure that your mistake is going over the back of the green. It kills your scoring, but it feels like you’re doing something right (if that makes sense?). I took my bag out to the fairway by my house today with my rangefinder, and sure enough, I’m hitting my irons and hybrids almost a full club longer. I’ve been working really hard on them and my short game, so it’s nice to see good results, but now I’m starting to struggle a bit with the top of my bag. It’s always something… I rarely get everything working well at the same time any more. Popular Post fozcycle
Shot a 45/43:88 today and won two net skins! Had a birdie on the Par 3 #12 when I sunk a 36’ putt! My FIR was 12/14 for 86% GIR 3/18 17% and 32 total putts. After replacing my watch and I noticed the sensor in the band picked up the club much faster.
