... We all struggle with the game. It comes and goes and I have learned to appreciate the times when everything seems easy and accept the times when everything is difficult and stopped fighting it quite a few years ago. To someone looking to break 90 the difference between a 70 and a 75 may seem small, but as you know hitting fairways and greens and just not making everything you look at is pretty easy. Make everything and a sub 70 is in the cards. Otoh missing fairways and greens when the swing is just a little out of sync can make for a very difficult round, chipping/pitching and grinding out pars and rarely having a look at a makable birdie. The entire day is a struggle but you learn how to score on your off days. Still an easy 71 can feel like a great day and a grinding 74 can feel like you were beat with a sack full of used batteries.

... I am waaaaaay ahead of you on playing with a bad back. Two back surgeries 25 years or so when I had to change my swing and my approach to the game, but thanks for the reminder. I am not trying to do anything different in my speed training other than just swing faster. As long as my sequencing is in place, I find it pretty easy to do it with no added stress on my back. For me it is just a question of hitting a ball on the course they way I have for literally hundreds of thousands of swings OR swing faster and freely with no ball. I am not trying to go from 95+ to 115 and will be delighted with 100 and maybe even getting up to 105 but certainly no more than that. Swing feels good but just a little out of control in speed training but I will always follow the intricate, educated advice from an expert in the field that went to Med School and has more knowledge about physiology and genetics than I could ever dream of when he told me in the most technical medical terms "If it hurts, stop doing it. If it doesn't hurt do it all you want".

I like that sound advice from your medical friend darn good one tell him thanks I have adopted it if you and he do not mind. Solid advice. Kinda like one of my race cars I had in the early days. the previous owner had painted on the dash---- "Don't Hold Back if it Feels Good Do It" My problem in those racing days as my friend put it I had more balls than brains or driving ability. I would do it whether it felt good or not WFO all the time. I have learned in my old age and pain now---- I think of myself as older and wiser. For me it feels funny but I am learning to relish it. My friend who I played with Friday in the past has played a lot of golf with me i but has not played with me in like 4 or 5 years remarked. It was the first time he had ever seen me throttle back and not be WFO and actually plotting and thinking my way around the golf course. Yep I think older and wiser

Got out for 9 holes my first round of the season. 39* at tee-off, with most of the water hazards iced over from overnight cold. At one point my brother topped the ball off the tee, it bounced down into the water hazard, across the ice, and back up the other side!

With the cold it was tough to get a full swing in. I was wearing a down coat and taking it off for each shot. Driving was actually really good, and I was 2/2 out of bunkers, but struggled with my irons.

@Kieran has kept his hair pretty long over the winter, so it felt like I was golfing with a bigger Tommy Fleetwood.

Overall a decent start to the season!

LOL got him and Fleetwood beat in the hair department. At my club there are 3 of us in our 60s that have shoulder length full heads of hair. Sometimes we knock it around during the week for kicks and giggles. If we get a tee time Lee who will call in will get the tee time as the Hippie group. When it is not season we just do a walk on but the one bald headed starter will say the Old worn out Hippie group is up next. I will say though your friend appears to grow a better beard than I do. I do have a decent Fu Man but my full beard looks like a dog with mange. I attribute that to my Native American Heritage

Hey in Stu's World we say lets tee it up and go for it. Reminds me of the movie "The Squeeze" where at the first they were playing cross city golf. Go for it long as we don't get runover by a Mack Truck or Moped

Today was an absolutely beautiful day on the course.  A good friend and I played one of our locals and I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Clear, blue skies, a little breezy, and a little cool, but dam, such a great day with my friend.  I scored well, for me; not the best I have ever scored, nor the worst.  My friend got his first ACE on number 4.  Of course I had to give him a ration of S__t the rest of the day, but we are friends and know how to take each other.  This is why I golf; to enjoy the day and the company as much as I did today

39/40:79   10 FW,  8 GIR, 30 putts.

Was supposed to be low 50s. Actual weather was overcast and don't think it got out of the 40s but it was still a decent day since there wasn't a lot of wind.  Struggled off the tee even though I hit a decent amount of fairways.   I was hitting the driver/3w fat or hit snap hooks.  Iron play was solid, but had to get used to a new ball flight.  My irons are normally pretty straight or slight fade but today I was hitting push draws as I got into my mid to long irons.   Missed quite a few greens, but my finesse wedges were working well and I got up and down quite a few times.  Iron and short game took a lot of pressure off the putter;  bunch of 1 putts and nothing too long when I hit the green.

I.   Played.   Horribly.

I don't know where my swing went yesterday but I had various problems from judging the wind and distance control to missing a few left and a few right to mis-clubbing long and short.  Like @cnosil said it was supposed to get into the 50's but I am sure it didn't get above 45 and we had a 3 club wind going on.  I was colder and stiffer golfing yesterday than I was going up the ski lift a couple weeks ago in 20* weather and high winds.  😱

Even though it's warming up, our course was closed yesterday.  We got a tee time at another course in town (the one where I play Wolf with a group of guys).  The course is looking better than past years after their irrigation pump broke, but the greens were very furry compared to ours.  Hard to get a putt to the hole.  Shot 83 with one birdie after sticking a 9i approach on a par 5.  The turf is very different than ours, and I had trouble with my MacGregor irons... hooking.

Found @Yellow Ball hiding by some rocks.  Only water on the course... the other balls were saying "c'mon in; the waters fine!"  He reminds me of my Dalmatian when he was playing with a Lab!!

Monday Exec 9 today.  63*, cold wind, cloudy & light cold mist.  I guess a nice golf day in Ireland!!
Had 2 guys 80ish in this morning group so decision was made to play Senior Tees.  Oh boy, these Tees were still a challenge for both of them.
I was hitting ball very well,h on the 2 Par 4’s which were very long Par 3’s from those Tees took driver out of play.  Had NUMEROUS birdie putts but couldn’t putt at all.  Ended up 2 over.

We have one group of guys that play the Forward (Red) tees.  If that's where you enjoy golf the most, then that's where you should play.

I've played several times from our Red tees with my wife and other ladies, and it is certainly a challenge.  If I played there all the time, I could get used to it very quickly!!  But there are still 3 of our 5 par 5's that I can't reach in two... because of hole design.

... I really wish they would change the color of the "forward" tees to something other than Red that some still feel like are the "Ladies" tees. As I have said over and over again holes are designed to be played with certain approach shots and if the design calls for a short or maybe mid iron and you need a wood to reach or worse come up short, you are playing the wrong tees. Golf is hard enough so the equivalent of playing basketball with 20 foot rims just doesn't make much sense.

... I also wish more courses had Combo scorecards. My home course here in Phoenix has 5 really long par 4's but the rest of the course including the par 5's are all reachable with decent shots. I have tried to talk some of my playing pards into moving up one tee box for those 5 holes because they cannot reach any of them in 2 shots but they just won't do it. A little bit of male ego I guess but if they had a Combo scorecard all of them admit they would do it since it would be official yardages!  🤪

Combo scorecards would help.

The courses with “Red Tees” might just as well put “pink bunnies” as markers.  Guys no matter what age will avoid Red Tees like the plague.

... Just yesterday I played with 2 Ladies and really enjoyed their company so when the guy I was playing with left after 9, I joined them on the red tees and just hit irons off all the holes on the back 9. I had a blast.

... I really wish they would change the color of the "forward" tees to something other than Red that some still feel like are the "Ladies" tees.

The course that I recently joined is undergoing a change from tee boxes with color markers to simply numbered tees...1-6 with 6 being the forward-most tees.

Yes, I'm a member of the Gold Cup group who play from the white tees for points throughout the year.  This tee box has been re-designated as tee box 4.  One of the players in our group has suggested that we rename the group from Gold Cup to Four Play.  Not sure how the club's WGA is going to respond.

We don't have combo tees on the scorecard, but there is also a group that plays Blue on some holes and White on other holes in their group.

However, there is one par 5 that I will never be able to reach in two shots even from the Forward tees; 466y into the prevailing wind.  There are two other par 5's (dogleg lefts) that I could reach from the Forward tees but the risk is just not worth it unless you have a high 190-200y carry shot in your bag... which I don't.  In my mind they were designed to be 3-shot holes.  Big hitters can certainly go for the greens on those holes from the Blues, and they do... which causes a lot of backup in scramble events.

I don't normally play on Mondays anymore, but since we couldn't play on Saturday, we decided to play today as it was supposed to be 65º. When we got to the course at 9:30am it was 42º with wind out of the north.  On the 3rd hole it started to rain.  On the 12th hole the wind switched to the SW and it got warmer, but it was blowing 20-30mph. Well, at least the rain stopped!!

Shot +5 on the front and +6 on the back for an 83.  After yesterdays round on our other course with very slow greens, we are back to our fairly quick greens and I rolled the ball better.  Made a nice 15-footer downhill, into the wind, right to left putt for birdie on #16.  Temp got up to 64º after we finished our 3.5 hour round.  Could have been quicker, but we ran into the back end of the Men's Club on #14 and had to wait on every shot after that.
