PXG Allan Putter - 2024 Forum Review

Recommended Posts

I apologize, I really did this all wrong. Chalk it up to a bit a rookie mistake.

Here I a bit more of an intro in to me.

Hi, My name is Cody and I live in Reno, NV

I am 44 years old and have been playing golf for going on 30 years. I started playing in high school. I was on the high school golf team and as I freshman, I remember shooting 120 and losing lots of golf balls. By my senior year I was in the low 80's. I have not improved all that much since then. lol. But, My biggest strength in golf is that in general I hit the ball pretty far. When I am hitting driver well, I tend to shoot pretty good scores. When it is off and I am left to lean on my scrambling and putting. Scores suffer.

I would say that my biggest weakness and the reason that I excited to participate in the test is putting. I have over the years really tried everything. I have left hand low'd. I have long putter'd (pre anchor ban). I have tried everything from 8802 full toe hang putters to center shafted face balanced mallets. All with various levels of success but really still leaving me wanting something else.

(stealing some images from a post a bit further down)

Here is a picture of the last two putters and the Allen Showing toe hang variations and degrees. Most recently I have been using the Toulon Seattle ( Thanks Scottie Scheffler) with a crank neck. It was working pretty well and was a step up from the 8802.

For my handicap, the Grint says that putting is a weakness with my average being around 33 putts/round with at least 1 three putt a round.

image.png.e7ab774acd1d6765cec596fd3e8cd029.png

I am really looking forward to putting the Allen to the test over the next little while and I am hoping to see that average start to work down. Looking forward to chatting with you all! If you have any kind of question, comment, criticism, or testing suggestions, please let me know! I am happy to go out and try something if it help you understand this product and decide if it is something for you!

INTRO:
Hi Fellow Spies!

I would first like to thank PXG for supplying the Allan putters for our testing, and to MGS, without whom we would never get to participate in these tests.

My name is Bill Akins.  I'm married to my best friend, Hollie.  Our daughter is Jessica and has just recently graduated from UGA and is taking some time off before heading off to get her Master's degree in Nursing.  We live at Lake Lanier in Buford, GA about 35 miles north of Atlanta.Wifey.jpg.187dab8c9086f790fd3149f17b903e96.jpg

Wifey & I hiking in N. Georgi

I've only been golfing a couple of years. While I'm getting better, I haven't yet broken 100.

Clubs:
I am currently playing Cobra AeroJet irons (5-PW), Cobra RadSpeed XB driver, 4 & 5 hybrid, Cobra Baffler 3 wood, Vokey Spin Milled 56°, 60°, and an Odyssey White Hot Stroke Lab OG #7 putter.

PXL_20240914_1943446592.jpg.43ea86c7f4a415cccf7bdcdcf392a8bb.jpg

I am looking forward to testing this Allan putter.  The balance is completely different than my putter, or any other I have tried.  I've also never been fitted for a putter before, this is exciting!  Thank you again to MGS and PXG!

The Fitting Process:

I received an email from Megan, the PXG PR Coordinator, asking when I wanted to go for my fitting.  We decided on a date and time.  I went to the PXG store in Lenox Mall, Atlanta on a Saturday, 9/14.  It is tucked in with high-end stores like Armani, Bloomingdales, and Ferragamo, to name a few.  The store has a very nice high-end feel and appearance.  They have a nice assortment of clothing, hats, and accessories.

Store2.jpg.d0924cf190f4a77660e09ad07e76add9.jpg

My fitter was Matt Russell.  Super nice guy.  He told me the story of PXG and its philosophy.  He showed me around and explained the rationale behind the Allan putter design.  I took my current putter, an Odessey OG 7 White Hot.  Matt placed my putter in a plastic tube with a pin in the top end that went into the hole in the grip.  A bottom piece wrapped around the club shaft, but allowed it to spin.  It was then slid up into the bottom of the plastic tube.  When the club was swung, you could see the face of the club turn away from the target line.  He explained how the Allan was designed and built, then performed the same procedure with the Allan.  The face of the Allan remained pointing at the target line through the swing.

swingdevice.jpg.239d3dc30f691e4e77963bd946b46c95.jpg

Not Matt, I forgot to get a picture of the swing device.

Matt got a stock Allan putter without a grip.  He put on a grip similar to my current grip that tightened with a thumb screw at the base.  We tested a few heights until we got it right.  Matt asked if I had tried a bigger grip, which I had not.  We tried a few grips before deciding on a much larger pistol grip.  We then experimented with weights in the putter head until it felt right for me.  I spent almost an hour putting and trying out grips, lenghts, and weights.

Matt explains the geometry of the Allan putter.

Sinking them like a pro!

I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision.  Once we had decided on everything, Matt entered the order and said I would hear from them on Monday.  He asked what kind of golf ball I usually played, and I told him.  He disappeared for a minute and returned with a dozen golf balls and his "card", a poker chip/ball marker.  Very cool!

Matt's card and a dozen balls!

True to his word, I got an email Monday saying my club was being made and I would get a tracking number soon.  The following day, I got a tracking number.  The club arrived on Thursday.

Let's get this opened up!

As you'd expect, the PXG Allan putter arrived via FedEx in a regular brown carton.  Inside the carton was a PXG box containing the putter I had been waiting for!

PXL_20240920_174423430-2.jpg.086aa9e7f833d7b42a90018f077a3658.jpg

The box is the typical size and shape for golf clubs, there were no visible damage or defects.  It's pretty eye-catching with its full black appearance and the PXG logo emblazoned across the top.

Opening the top flap revealed the putter securely packed.  The PXG logo across the flap, "You've never played like this before."

First impressions:

The putter is very nice looking.  Looking at the putter in a black box, it seemed large.

PXL_20240920_174900463.jpg.654d0d8103ca590a61f0037cefdd41e4.jpg

Looking down the shaft at address is a little different.  I love the appearance of the club head.  The alignment line helps get you on the right path, especially if paired with an alignment stripe on a ball.

PXL_20240920_174929134.jpg.d9abef65185a5533a5621901a34e87a0.jpg

The putter face is milled and has a distinct appearance with the diamond cut milling and the PXG logo in the upper right corner.

PXL_20240920_174951098.jpg.4e098a311d78b5ee33984ff5447bcace.jpg

The underside of the putter head features weight ports and a hollow, grooved area for picking up golf balls.  It's a nice touch and it works well.PXL_20240920_175007403.jpg.a4ad8e0f46dd3b36fd7ca7602b986311.jpg

I like the heft of this putter.  I usually leave putts short, so at the fitting we played around with weights to get a weight that would help with distance.  Let's face it, I RARELY get it onto the green with a 2' putt remaining.  The grip is large and I'm still getting used to it.  The balance feels nice on this putter.  And speaking of balance, if you balance the club on your finger, the head always points to the target.

My first impressions can be summed up with this video of my first 19' putt with the new Allan putter!

Let's hope I can do the same on the greens!

ON THE COURSE:
Coming soon!

Hello spies!

Thanks for stopping by my introduction post for the PXG Allen test.

First, I would like to start off by thanking the MGS staff for selecting me for this test. The testing opportunities on this forum are a unique way of allowing everyday golfers to test gear and share their experience without having a marketing twist to it. I’m very excited to get things started and hopefully provide some of my fellow spies with some insights on my experience with what most golfers see as PXG's response to the popularity of the L.A.B. Golf putters.

About me:

My name is Derek and I live in the North Phoenix/North Scottsdale area. As with most Arizonans, I am a Midwest transplant (Illinois). I grew up in the East Valley of the Phoenix Metro area and then spent nearly twelve years in Tucson, before finally making it back to Phoenix in 2021. When I left for college in 2009, I expected to be back in Phoenix within a few months of graduating, but Tucson has this weird Hotel California way of sucking people in. I love living in Arizona for many reasons, but one new reason is how readily living here fuels my recent obsession with golf.

IMG_6430-Copy.JPEG.94bf4f832befa334762dc49707577b10.JPEG

(Me off the coast of South Carolina April 2024)

To bank roll my increasingly troubling golf habits I work in the healthcare industry working on integration of artificial intelligence to automate financial and clinical workstreams. It is interesting work, especially since AI has just gotten to the point of being commercially viable so I get to be on the forefront of finding solutions to complex problems.

I’m a bit of a busy body so when I’m not working, I am generally doing something related to my ever-expanding list of hobbies/interests. For about three years now I’ve been training in Brazilian jiu jitsu two to three times a week. I have to say that this has helped my golf game more than I would have expected. I generally hit the driving range every weekend, and in weeks where I haven’t trained in BJJ as much I feel much stiffer and out of sync.

Golf Game:

Enough about the boring stuff, let’s talk golf. I started playing golf in my early teens. My dad and uncle would play sometimes and introduced me to it. I never got super into it, and for my first couple years of college I didn’t even have clubs with me. For the past 15 years I would go golf ever so often or head to the driving range, but I was by no means an avid golfer. Then came the bachelor party.

BPGolf_label.jpg.b2f46b9271911f989d60849a35f2c47c.jpg

(Jan 2024 Bachelor party golf event, I’m labeled with the red arrow…the short guy, you can’t miss me)

In January of this year, I got to celebrate the marriage of one of my closest friends. One of the team-based events during the three-day bachelor party was an 18-hole scramble with each hole having special rules and potential bonus points. Prior to this round, I hadn’t played a full round of golf since 2020. I had such a blast that three weeks later I was getting fit for new clubs to replace the starter set I had been playing since high school. I've played 20 rounds since then and will likely finish the year with about 30 rounds on the books.

Testing Focus

To start, I'll be doing my best to let all of you how the ball rolls with the Allen. this wouldn't be a putter test if that wasn't the first question, right? Second, and I'll try to address the elephant in the room... how does the Allen compare to the L.A.B Golf putters?

My review will include information about my experience with both my L.A.B. Golf DF3 and the PXG Allen.

IMG_7260.JPEG.850d565486886936e78f13974db639d6.JPEG

(My custom DF3)

I'm looking forward to getting this test going and answering any questions that come up from my fellow spies. If you have anything specific you want answered, please don't hesitate to tag me in the thread or DM me.

Thanks,

Derek

First Impressions (10 out of 10)

I would usually approach a first impressions section focused directly on the product, but in this case, I wouldn’t be doing this review justice if I didn’t start of by focusing on the PXG fitting process.

To put it simply, a PXG fitting is second to none.

Being in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area I got to do my fitting at the PXG headquarters which also houses their flagship retail store. It was cool to learn from my fitter Blake that the corporate headquarters as well as a large portion of their manufacturing and fulfillment also happens out of the cluster of PXG buildings that live across the street from each other.

IMG_8701.JPEG.8379a7ba198b668205152b9e7f811e43.JPEG

The customer front area houses a retail area with apparel and golf accessories separated from the large fitting area pictured above. Each of the bays are outfitted with Trackman systems and large hitting screens as you would expect from an indoor fitting, but one detail that PXG nails at this location is the ambiance; it is immediately clear that making your fitting something to remember is key for how PXG approaches their fitting experience.

During my fitting I was in a bay that is focused on putting. I really appreciate that PXG was intentional in setting up this area to ensure that the most used stick in the bag gets the attention it deserves.

IMG_8688.JPEG.619e1e4dc3b81168bb77920e219113dd.JPEG

IMG_8689.JPEG.2fa165b8ebf175fbaf1bfe5a1e865bd9.JPEG

For as silly as it may sound, having the surrounding wall wrapped in a picture of the 18th hole (before it was redesigned) of Scottsdale National added more to the experience than I would have expected.

Along with the ambience, the fitting experience was enjoyable. The PXG staff were great from the moment I walked in the door, from the brief chat with the person manning the front desk of the retail section to my detailed fitting with Blake. I have to give a shout out to Blake for being very knowledgeable and an overall cool dude to spend an hour talking golf with. I highly recommend setting up time with him If any of you are in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area and considering a fitting at PXG. You can find his contact info in my Zero Torque Testing video below.

The result of my fitting was the Allan at 33.5” on a PXG M16 putter shaft, with the standard 5° of loft and 70° lie angle.

Another perk of being so close to the headquarters is that I received an email notifying me that the Allan was ready for me to picked up mid afternoon on Monday, September 16th, only four days after my fitting on Friday, September 12th. Speaking from experience, this is crazy fast! Outside of my DF3, my entire bag is made up of Ping clubs, another Arizona-based company that is located about 25 minutes southwest of PXG. In both instances that I have ordered Ping clubs during the last six months I have waited some where between two to three weeks to receive my clubs. PXG’s fast turnaround was another great example of their focus on customer experience.

Unboxing

No surprise, PXG does a decent job at presenting their products in the box. Nothing super fancy or as satisfying as opening a new iPhone with that near airtight connection between the top and bottom sections of the box, but still a nice job. The blacked-out box fits with their branding, and it is of a high-quality construction. I picked the Allan up from PXG instead of having it shipped, so it didn’t need to be well protected during shipping, but I’m confident that this box would have protected the Allan or any other clubs it housed during a trip on the FedEx roller coaster.

IMG_8757.JPEG.22245b3fb81ef3d6dc69a18a8f7e17a8.JPEG

IMG_8758_EDIT.JPEG.5b387875bcda832ad978327c87bf050d.JPEG

IMG_8760_EDIT.JPEG.45c5cd2a0882ddb96697726d9e8087c0.JPEG

Along with the putter the box contained a nice PXG document envelope with the order form, a couple PXG stickers and a small advertisement for Bob Parson’s book. Not a huge deal, but I’m always a fan of companies throwing a few stickers in when I purchase something in the $100+ range. It is a near zero cost thing for them, it gives the customer the small sense of getting something for “free”, and it could result in free advertising if the customer rocks the stock on their car or HydraFlask like I do.

Aesthetics (TBD)

The sense that I have gotten from a lot of golfers is that PXG is a love it or hate it type of brand. They undoubtedly have a unique take on branding that is a little more out there compared to other major brands, the X in PXG does stand for Extreme, after all. Of the PXG putters that I looked at while at PXG, the Allan seemed to be the tamest of the bunch, while still maintaining the clear PXG feel. It is a very nice-looking putter, that catches the eye without standing out as being gaudy. Your eye is quickly drawn the full-length alignment line at address, leaving zero question where the club is lined up to. The mallet body shape is likely to draw the attention of those L.A.B. curious golfers who haven’t taken the plunge because of the unusual shapes.

Congratulations to this group of testers.

Looking forward to your comments and reviews on these to see how they may compare to other similar "zero or low torque" putters in the marketplace.

Really looking forward to this one. Currently gaming a custom bradley putter which I love, but I'm really intrigued by the zero torque style putters and this being more economical than LAB.

Congrats testers! Will be interesting to see if the Alan is truly a "zero torque" putter.

Congratulations testers! Always interesting to see putter reviews, particularly someone else hopping on the zero torque wagon.  Roll 'em straight.

Congratulations testers! As a new huge fan of PXG, new found interest in putters of all kinds, and having found a lot of improvement in my putting ability lately I’m definitely going to keep a watch on this test. Good luck testers!

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, PXG 0311 P Gen 7 irons (4-GW), 54&58 degree Sub70 246 wedges, Tommy Armour #2 wide blade putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. When just getting a round in with friends or scrambling I play whatever I might find on the course or might find at the bottom of my bag.
