first fitting!

Welp, twincitiesgolf.com mentioned awhile back that the folks at Pat Ryan Golf were offering a full fitting session with their Class A clubmaker for free... Finally I've decided to jump on it. I'm pretty excited, and hopefully I can obtain some copies of the videos of my swing to share with the world here. Surprisingly, this fitter is the only Class A fitter in Minnesota, so hopefully I gain the benefit we all hear about coming out of professional fittings. I think I'll focus on my W/S FG Tour V2s and my (new!) Mizuno MP59s. I'm particularly curious to see how I can use the KBS Tour shafts and TT DG shafts to mix and match the most advantageous set... I'll keep y'all updated!

Funny - I just went there and had my irons fitted today!

Overall it was a great experience. I ended up having him make a few adjustments to my clubs. After running through a bunch of different irons shafts of various lengths and flex points it seems like I was leaving around 15-20 mph of ball speed on the table with my 7 iron.

Hopefully I should have the clubs back in a few days!!

Just don't take up all Tom's time tomorrow, he needs to be working on my clubs :)

Ok ok, I only took a few a few hours of his time. Man, that was a great session. He totally shatters kind of a lot of preconceived notions I had about clubs in general. Turns out that I too was extremely consistent, and while I was contacting the ball with a slightly open face, it matched well with my slightly inside-out swing path to generate that sweet little kind of baby draw with the right setup. Contrary to the static measurement I got at a golf shop, instead of chopping my shafts by almost an inch because I'm only 5'7", Tom and I found that I actually performed much better with a half inch longer shaft! Now I just need to wait for my new mp59s to get here from Richard from our trade to go ahead with my adjustments. I will say though, after the amount of knowledge Tom displayed, I can't imagine that I'll ever take clubs to anyone else for any reason. I like how shaft-oriented his fitting is and I feel like I really learned a lot. That being said, I still need to do just a little bit of homework on a fitting cart to see if I like the feel of my KBS Tour stiffs on the Mizzys enough to swap the shafts of my FG Tours and the Mizzys. The possibilities are exciting though.

Sidenote, by the way... Tom and I were talking about wedge shafts for a bit when he saw my Scratch wedges and he mentioned almost immediately that he was building a set of Scratch irons, presumably yours!

All in all, an excellent club oriented fitting! Expect updates.

Funny enough, I was at Golf Galaxy yesterday hitting a standard mp59 and when the guy came up I mentioned that I wanted to try hitting the mp59 with a longer kbs shaft and he walked away. He thought I had no clue what I was talking about... I'm only 5'7" and he thought it was ridiculous that I wanted a longer shaft rather than a shorter one. Finally, about 45 mins later he came back and I was more direct about him putting the club together for me to hit. So he did put it together and sure enough, I started hitting beautiful and consistent shots to the distance I've been wanting. I'm so glad I have the knowledge from Tom's dynamic fitting to get me on track.

  • 8 months later...

Did an updated fitting yesterday. My swing has changed since the fitting I started this thread for, but Pat Ryan Golf has gone out of business (maybe a few too many free fittings?). So, after google researching the area fitters, I chose to go with ultimate fit golf. Great credentials, professional looking everything, and the knowledge was clearly there. When I pulled up yesterday I had to drive around the block a second time to make sure that I was in the right place, because I was in front of an above average sized garage behind a below average sized house on an ordinary residential street. Well, this didn't seem promising. I could've driven away, but I got out and walked up nonetheless and I'm really glad that I did. Once inside, I met Joe, and he had everything to back up the professionalism exhibited on his site. It was a full fitting bay with more clubs and shafts and gear lining the walls. So, we got down to work, and I had brought my W/S FG Tour V2s and MP-62s. After the requisite basic questions and a little warm up, we got to work finding the best shafts for me. We found that, while I don't quite swing at an extra stiff warranting swing speed, I still performed best with the KBS XS shafts that I had in the Mizzys. Also, as I had suspected, the C-Taper R flex shafts in the W/S were just too soft for me. I also brought a set of DG S300 pulls to throw into the mix. After a lot of balls, and just as much data, we decided to pair the FG Tours (my preferred set) with the KBS XS soft-stepped, and the Mizzys with the DG S300 soft-stepped. As it turns out, I just perform better with the heavier shafts. So, that leaves a set of C-Taper pulls, which is a bummer, because I love the shafts, but they just aren't the right flex or weight for me. Look for them to hit the classifieds soon, hopefully for a trade of some kind. I'm open to anything.

What I really liked was that Joe didn't used preconceptions or limited data. We looked at everything and THEN made decisions. I like the more deliberate and data-driven fittings. Another great things was how quick the turnaround was. I went in around 9:30am and hit for a couple hours and left both sets with him. By 6pm the same day everything was done and I was back in there hitting off the lie board and getting each club in both sets honed in. Good luck getting that service anywhere else. The speed didn't come at the expense of attention to detail either, as his shaft work looked excellent. Very clean and everything looked perfect.

My final note would be about the progressive swing weighting, or MOI matching. Basically, the clubs all are matched to a MOI, rather than swing weight, and therefore, the swing weights come out on a progressive scale. If you're curious about it, you can google it or look it up on ultimatefitgolf.com

Excellent experience, excellent workmanship, excellent knowledge... I'll let you know about the results!

Great update. Once I get my swing and game where I want it I want to go through a fitting like this. It seems like fun even if you already are playing the right setup.
