And just like I did with my name. I may be going back to an old faithful comfortable set of irons very soon.

I love those stickers with the 26.2 or 13.1 or your triathlon distances. I always thought it would be funny to move those decimal points up for us lazy folks. Like .131 or .262

Ha there’s some stickers that say 26.2 then have in small print (hours binge watching Netflix) at the bottom haha

It'll certainly help! Granted, it's not as fantastic as it may seem - it'll only save us about $2k-$4k per year, BUT since she has that there are other merit-based scholarships that she'll most likely qualify for as a result.

MassArt is her #1 choice right now. She's also considering the Art Institute of Chicago but I think that one is fading.

Only save you $2-$4k a year? Either MA colleges are less expensive than VA schools or you are still using your 529 plan. Tuition for the VA schools seems to be in the $10-20k a year range. Those numbers include room as well, which maybe the scholarship doesn’t cover.

Yeah the fees is where they get you. Tuition could be $2k for in state students but then fees are $12k and room & board is another $12k. Still far less expensive overall than someplace like BU so I’m happy that MassArt is still her first choice (for now).

I was fortunate, my parents paid for my college. I was a little more than what you paid but still a lot less than being paid now. Now a single text book can be more than what you paid for that quarter and books combined.

I have a prepaid 529 so It would be much more cost effective for her to go to a state school. However, We have had issues with every state school she had applied too; most keep reporting that they don’t have transcripts or test scores even though they were sent electronically and we have the documentation showing they were sent. Call and you get different information about what they have. Even had one school call and tell her she was accepted and when she asked about the degree program she wanted; which hasn’t even started their application review process, they said the review process hasn’t started and told her that basically she hasn’t been accepted and they would get back to her.

Fun times. She has pretty much made her final decision on where to go and based on what I have seen I think it will be a great fit for her.

I seldom talk about my family on forums but after reading PMookie’s post I wanted to brag about my daughter a little. 9 college acceptances to date all coming with the colleges highest level of academic scholarship. Yesterday, she got a letter, from one of her top choices, asking her to apply for a full academic scholarship.

Awesome

Matt that’s not a bad way to go.
It’s a long time ago but I had no clue what to do with my life. I decided to go to a trade school (with prompting from Pop). I really liked it! Took up Tool & Die from there relevant engineering & business college classes which led to eventually running a manufacturing co.
Kids have to find their own way. Your boy will
BTW my parents never spent a dime on college.

My daughter and her husband arrived from Australia last night for my son's wedding. It was an uneventful trip with only a small hiccup at DFW when they had to wait for a mechanical issue. Other than regular Skype calls we haven't seen both of them in a year.

This will be a special wedding this weekend, as it should be when your kids get married. I may have mentioned this in another post but in case I didn't, my daughter will be my son's best mate in the wedding. I'm thrilled he picked her, it just further cements that bond between brother and sister.

I’m in the same college choosing stage as a few others. She has been accepted to Ferris state, 14 hours away, but my family is 2 hours from there and my in-laws live 20 minutes from the campus. We are still hoping to hear from Charelston Southern, much closer to home, and warmer.

For me, college was a trade school and a party venue.   The profession I wanted required the "sheepskin" to get through the front doors.  Not all professions have that same entry requirement.  From my perspective, educated and smart are not the same thing.    During my professional life, some of the most successful and smartest people I met never stepped foot on a campus, yet, some of the dumbest people I met love to write PhD after their names.   Yes, it's good to know things, but it is more important to have the ability to apply what you know.

God knew that I should not be allowed to reproduce, so the wife and I had no children, so we will be able to enjoy what would have been a college fund.

Intelligence, knowledge, and wisdom are three completely different things.

On the whole, though, I would call college a very worthwhile experience.

Just a small example:

Think of high school.

The cliques.

The conformity.

The popularity class structure.

I chose boxing over high school sports just on the basis of hating high school jock culture.

Now look at college.

Everything is live and let live.

Do your own thing.

Embrace tolerance.

College specifically teaches this, and it teaches it early.

After a semester, you're not the person you were at high school graduation.

Which is why I take a different view of it than some,

and why I calI  PhDs "Doctor,"

even if they're 25,

unless they ask me to use their first names.
