The new Titleist AVX golf ball has been reengineered from core to cover to increase performance on every shot, delivering longer distance tee to green, more greenside spin and control and even softer feel.

AVX PERFORMANCE & TECHNOLOGY

HIGH GRADIENT, HIGH SPEED CORE: The next generation AVX features a new high gradient, high speed core which provides longer distance from tee to green along with exceptionally soft feel. This is the same high gradient core technology found in Pro V1 and Pro V1x, which helps reduce long game spin without sacrificing greenside spin and control.
 

“When we talk about the gradient of the core, we're talking about stiffness as it radiates from the center of the core to the outermost layers of that core,” said Mike Madson, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball R&D. “With AVX’s core reformulated for a higher gradient, we’re able to give golfers more of that low spin and long distance with their long irons and hybrids, which is hugely important to the AVX player.”

HIGH-FLEX CASING LAYER, SOFTER URETHANE COVER: Over the top of AVX’s high gradient core, a new thin, high-flex casing layer reduces excess spin in the long game, while a new softer urethane cover designed for AVX delivers increased spin and stopping power with the scoring clubs. Interactions between the core, casing layer and cover give Titleist engineers the ability to manage spin numbers optimally throughout the bag.
 

“With three-piece construction golf balls, one of the real benefits is the hard-over-soft and soft-over-hard relationships which allow us to control spin in various aspects of the game,” Madson said. “For example, when there is a very high-speed impact condition, the cover is going to play less of a role during that collision. Most of what is interacting with the club face is that stiff casing layer and that soft core, which is a hard-over-soft relationship. When you have hard-over-soft, it drives spin down. Conversely, on shots around the green, the impact with a wedge is a lower speed collision or more of a glancing blow where the interaction is primarily between the cover and the casing layer. When you have that soft cover over that stiff casing layer, that soft-over-hard relationship drives spin up. This helps give AVX golfers the distance they enjoy at the top end of their bags as well as the greenside spin they seek with their wedges.”

Very nice! I did have a good experience with the white box test balls! I liked the performance of the Maxfli Tour S equally, but I liked the feel and flight of the Maxfli better. It would be fun to do a true Titleist ball fitting someday.

Wonder what the compression is for the new AVX?

For a lower spinning ball, it does get pretty good greenside spin. Not enough for my liking though. It sounds like this is in fact geared towards a lower swing speed player.

According to the MGS Labs review in 2022, the 2022 AVX version was 77 compression and the 2020 version was 78. So my guess is this update won't change very much from that. But I could be wrong...

Yes, I saw the compression of the older versions. I was wondering if this version was low 80’s. I tend to prefer a 86 or higher compression ball.

Yeah, if you're good enough to break 70 and win a longest drive title, as your banners indicate, you probably need a harder ball. Chops like me need the soft ones.

I also noticed our testing had the regular ProV1 at 87, although the V1X and the V1X Left Dash versions are harder.

I get why you'd say that.   But Titleist doesn't really market or design balls towards certain swing speeds.  And actually, a lower swing speed player typically needs more spin not less on the longer shots.

Thanks! Hey, you are on your way to lowering that handicap! I do play a slightly softer ball in the winter. During the summer I like using the firmer balls.

I get that part too. And I don't think the marketing research supports the notion of targeting slower swing speed players either. Do you think this ball is low spinning or lower spinning than the previous version?

I believe this was the ball I tested and it is a superior ball with all the characteristics of all Titleist balls and definitely a great new product - played Pro V 1&X for many years , I could be converted  , it’s that good

As a slower swing, and newer player, these did not wow me with the performance from testing. They tended to run out more on the greens, but the tee box lower flight helped alot in the wind conditions. But IMPO, they have lost their dang minds charging as much as they are for a dozen!

Speaking of compression, when I got fitted for my clubs, the fitter also suggested I try the Srixon Q-Star Tour and/or TaylorMade Tour Response, both of which are around 70 compression (MGS got the Q-Star Tour at 67 compression). Thanks to Erik at Random Golf Club, I also tried Vice Pro Soft which is also around 70. I liked all of those, but I also tried Srixon Soft Feel mainly because I found a box on sale at Dick's and I've stuck with that for a while. Seem to get better distance off the tee and good feel around the greens. Soft Feel is apparently around 60 compression.

I know I'm never going to break 70, or probably 80, unless I start playing from the very front tees. Just not enough distance. I find myself 60 yards from the green needing to hole out from there for par way too often. My goal at this point is to break 90 consistently; right now it's a once-in-a-great-while thing.

They haven't said directly...that I'm aware of.  As they want to keep it as its lowest flighted premium ball, I'd say it is the same or slightly less than last year, as it quite literally has a couple less dimples.

FWIW, it's actually priced lower than the previous version.  They eliminated the Tour Speed from this year's lineup and wanted to bring a ball into the range between Tour Soft and the ProV's line. 

It sounds like the test ball for a very good reason...ha

I swing 110+ and the AVX was what I was fitted to at Ping… Used it all last year.

I’m going to be grabbing these when they come out. All of the characteristics that made it the correct ball for me based on my numbers and I’ll get a little more distance and green side spin? Yep. I’ll take it! Now to wait and see if the multi-box discount will hit this year too….

Never compared to Pro V1, but I had excessive spin with Z Star series, and V1X, so when I was at Ping getting fitted they used the Ballnamic fitting using my exact numbers from the fitting. I have zero issues holding greens on approaches whether irons OR wedges, most of the time they hit and stick, no back-up which is awesome. Last time I played I hit my 4 hybrid into a Par 5 from 220 out and the AVX hit and stuck about 4 feet away… Been a great ball for me.
