    Happy thread

Ive been on light duty at work for 5 weeks and counting. Hurt my left shoulder at work and was convinced I had a torn rotator cuff. Ultrasound showed no rotator cuff tear which Im very thankful for. It did show some damage to the bicep tendon, and according to my doc,I got very lucky as this is much easier to solve.

  2. Arrived....... Just three days before the Club Championship......so I gotta wait until next week to put them in the bag. But I cheated.....went out yesterday evening and played in the Wednesday Night Shootout..,,just 9 holes, but it was fun! As expected, the irons are 1/2 club longer and fly higher! #CobraCONNECT using the King Cobra F8’s. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

    Operation: Beat SLDR

Wow..just wow! Thanks to @hckymeyer for nominating this thread as one of the most memorable...Well I think I want to thank him...ha But he sure nailed it. The BobCat/Tony back and forth will forever be MGS legendary stuff. Imagine some random internet dude telling one of the most respected Golf Equipment Writes in the business that he is clueless. Glad I had finished my coffee by then. Then to see it was resurrected by Studque two years later, and quietly went away....until today that is.. My actually biggest takeaway from the thread....going back 4 years I found it quite amazing how many drivers were brought up and raved about SLDR, Cobra LTD F6,, XR16, Big Bertha, G30 and others. And how rarely if every do I see any of those in bags now days. Probably the only one of the bunch would be the G30. This is an equipment forum and it goes to show, we do love trying and buying new and shiny!"

42/38 today. Felt like I was striking the ball a bit better today than I have been for the last 2-3 weeks (finally!). Still had a double on both front and back nines.

  13. I liked River's Edge, but that was years ago. I also played Lions' Paw and Panther's Run which are close to you. Oyster Bay was challenge for the high handicap that I was at the time. I have no idea what these courses are like now, so defer to the local MGS'ers.

  14. ... Threads always take on a life of their own. Questions raise answers that can create other questions and comments. Every answer is not geared directly toward the OP and I think that is a good thing on an open forum. How many replies do you need for "Do wide sole irons hold you back?" The easy and is "No, of course not." Yet, reality is always personal and hence the expounding on this subject. And MGS is not Facebook where people read the headlines not the story and post comments unrelated to the actual text, which is one of the reasons I love it here.

  15. Gaining a few mph is absolutely significant. Look at the very chart you posted. Going from 100 to 105 mph swing speed can increase your carry by 16 yards! That's more than a full club approach shot!

  19. Anyone else do this? Although I have 6 guys going this week, I still felt like I had to evaluate the FA list with extreme scrutiny just in case someone better was out there. Didn't end up making a move so Van Rooyen better go nuts this week! I'm the only one that has him so that'll be a big boost if he does. To give you an idea of how deep, I even used the "extra" stats categories Fantrax uses. You can really get lost comparing holes per birdie against boogies per round and beyond. Am I alone in the insanity here? Probably just me and @fixyurdivot on analytics island lol. @Quigleyd I'm majority app but have to get on desktop time to time for commissioner things. They're both fine but I need the portability since I don't get time to sit at my home computer much.

Soooo, your secret to hitting the ball really well is playing the course backwards??

  23. Today I focused on my 6, 7 and 8 irons. These, along with my hybrids, are the clubs I use most in my rounds. I know, that is a major revelation. Lately, my inconsistent club is the 6. I get good loft, ball speed and distance is not bad; but divergence from the target has widened in both directions. Today I even had a few topped shots. So, tomorrow through Sunday I will be figuring out were I am off in my routine. I do have a routine that has been very predictable and productive. Not sure why only the 6i is not doing well. Maybe, I need to not use it for a few days before a re-examination. O well, the course I am playing on Friday is playable without touching the 6.

  26. I don't think we are. Believe it or not, you have a relatively consistent swing, pretty much every golfer does. What happens is you hit shot 1 and want to improve so you try to change something and then after shot 2 you change something else. This is what most every golfer does since we rarely hit perfect shots. The mind is a powerful thing and does what it can to accomplish the goal of hitting the ball including making us do things out of sequence. Some shots are fat, some are thin, so are toe, some are heel, some have close face, some have open face, but the general mechanics of your swing don't change from swing to swing. As has been stated several times, club design helps the golf club work for particular swings so yes, the wide sole clubs are masking the fat strike. Can you get better using those same clubs sure. How do you do it, you work on ball striking either on your own or by taking lessons. You original question is do wide sole clubs hold you back? The answer to that is no, being unwilling to change what you are doing is what holds you back, not the clubs in your bag. Take lessons and work on your ball striking. Talk to the instructor about your goals and that you don't want to completely start over with your swing and want to build off of what you have.

  29. It’s been 30+ years since I last played BRCC, and my memory is still full of images of tight, oak-lined fairways. Well, I was in BR today, so I drove-by, and went to take a peek to see if my memory has served me correctly.... Sure enough, it has! I would say the majority of the courses I’ve played here in the State are very similarly set-up since the land is primarily “flat”, so the best defense are the huge oaks that populate our areas. Here are a couple of pics to show just how tight BRCC plays. The country club, and public course where I live are similarly set-up. It’s tough to pull driver with these views! Pic 1 is Hole 1, and the second is #9. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

    Union Green?

a few months back i am playing in a golf outing and a vendor was set up on the tee box to a 210 yrd par 3. We paid $5 for a contest which included 2 of these balls. We had to use these balls and if we hit the green, we would get a coupon for a dozen. Typically I play Prov1, TP5, or BXS....all the good quality balls......so I usually would hit my 19 degree hybrid on a hole like this. I teed up this ball and I was 30 yards short with both shots...... just for goofs i teed up my TP5 afterwards and sure enough i was just about pin high on the fringe of the green...... two of my playing partners also experienced the same thing. This ball was horrible....do not waste a dime on these......

  34. When I head that way I usually play rivers edge, crow creek, and the ocean ridge courses. All close to the island. Have to head to Myrtle area to get to the top courses which pushes your 30 minute ride especially coming off one of the islands. As had already been said there are a couple of forum members from that area that can give you better current course condition reports.

  35. I couldn’t agree more with storm319. It’s incredibly difficult to predict ingenuity but yet the USGA continues to make rules that try to thwart it. The USGA seems terrified of bifurcation but they already have that with the courses where tournaments are played. How many amateur players, other than perhaps a handful of high-level types, ever play a 7500-yard course? You can make a fairway 100 yards wide with crew-cut grass everywhere & few amateurs will play from those tees. Yes, yes, it’s fun to play a course set up for a tournament once in a while just to see how well (poorly??) you can do at such a venue. But I doubt it’s the go-to layout. So, if they narrow the fairway, grow the rough & speed up the greens for tournaments, they require a pro to have a diverse set of playing skills. My guess is that the number of players who can smash the ball 340 yards AND still get on the green-in-regulation will be an elite few. After all, how many names do you see on both the PGA Tour AND the Long Drive championships? One-trick ponies need not apply!!!! Someone criticized Adam’s Twitter post about growing the grass longer saying that will increase the amount of water & chemicals used and therefore it doesn’t solve the environmental issue of longer courses. I don’t believe that’s true at all. Long grass uses less water than short grass because of reduced evaporation (fact). And since some of the chemicals used are to make the grass look greener when cut short, it’s possible fewer chemicals will be needed as well. At worst, IMHO, they won’t need more chemicals. So, the “grow the grass” solution is something that can be tried now without the multi-year battle necessary with manufacturers. If it doesn’t work, at least they then know easy isn’t the solution. I am not at all opposed to modernizing rules to help slow down golf course lengthening, even if just to be sure we don’t run out of real estate. But come-on, this is easy to try!

  37. For me I found the best way to make trade offers is to find a player/players you want on a team you want to trade with. There is a trade button on mobile to the right of the drop button for the player your looking at. Click that for any players you want then hit next and that will take you to your team. Then select the player/players you want to trade away the same way. Once you have chosen all the players for that particular trade hit submit. Don’t be alarmed if it says it will make rosters illegal as you or the other party can release someone if it is accepted. You can also write a message to go along with the trade if you wish. I’ll see if I can get a screen shot of what I’m talking about for the button Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  41. I'm on the side of getting a few lessons. Even if you don't have a lot of time for a lot of practice, you can get some professional eyes on your grip, setup, takeaway, etc that can be very helpful. I've shared this anecdote before but I think it's relevant here too - I had a big slice and tried every single YouTube idea I could. Closing the face, rolling the forearms, motorcycle grip, swinging to right field, etc. 4-5 swings into one lesson and the pro pointed out that my shoulders were pointed 30 yards left of the target. No one I played with noticed that. So a few lessons to make sure you have a solid repeatable foundation (which you may indeed have shooting low 80's) can help out a lot in the long run.

  43. Agreed. Every ball attribute that has a meaningful impact on distance has been limited for years (current minimum diameter/maximum mass limits have been limited since the 1930s, maximum initial ball velocity/overall distance standard since the 1970s, and dimple symmetry since the 1980s). Where the USGA really dropped the ball (and has yet to admit guilt and apologize) was the too late approach to limiting maximum driver size/dimensions when we saw a very fast increase in the late 90's/early 2000's. Limiting the maximum size and dimensions much earlier than they did would have eliminated MOI from even being discussed, but unfortunately they missed their chance (also regulations prior to mass adoption tend to be a non-event). Regardless, I recall seeing DJ and JD carry the green over on a short par 4 playing slightly over 300 with their respective 3 woods (both under 180cc/under COR limit) at Chambers Bay in 2015 so I doubt that 350cc drivers would have resulted in much of a difference with the way elite golfers approach the game.

  44. ... Exactly Kenny. Either you strive to be the best you can be or you settle for where you are. If I had to switch to TM Sim Max irons I would be trying to maximize their potential and find a way to play them to the best of their potential and my ability. I would never get lazy or sloppy with my swing because I know I can get away with it using a more forgiving iron. So I have never understood how a more demanding iron can make you a better ball striker or improve your swing IF you were interested in being the best ball striker you can be already. A good swing is a good swing and center of the club is center of the club, so it makes no difference if you're playing MB's or SGI's if you are trying your best. Obviously mishits will be much worse with MB's and that could force you to slow down your swing or improve ball striking if you were lazy and careless using SGI's, but that is a different issue. I just think most of us that are serious about this game want to be the best we can be regardless of our index or our equipment.

  46. ... Tough topic. EVERYONE that plays golf has swing flaws. The idea behind equipment is to find what works best with your swing flaws and what works best with your swing strengths. There is just so much that goes into every swing and it is different for everyone. Picker or deep divots or somewhere in-between? Low, mid or high spin? Low, mid or high trajectory? Misses low or high and more heel or toe on the face? High, mid or low swing speed? Draw, straight or fade as well as hook or slice? ... Obviously there are so many combinations of the above and figuring that out can be very difficult without professional help. There are clubs designed to help mask the above flaws as well as take advantage of strengths. Nothing wrong with a slightly over the top swing, picking the ball off the ground and playing a fade IF you can be consistent doing so. Some may want to improve and some may want to keep doing what works for them. Equipment should always compliment your swing, not the other way around.

  47. I really enjoy this time of year. As a golf club junkie, most wanted testing is just a blast. I am fortunate to live close enough to be a participant. While driver testing was fun, but now I am in the middle of testing my favorite club.... the putter. Seeing some interesting stuff with the blade putters and it is a great practice session. It is nice to have a 20+ foot indoor green to work on soeed control. Been rolling lots of 5’, 10’, and 20’ putts. Stoke is looking good.
