Winners are notified via skywriting.  You must look to the sky outside of your home at exactly 2:37PM EDT to see if you have been chosen.  Make sure you are looking North/NorthWest

 

Also, contest winners/testers are announced in the thread and are contacted via Private Message just in case they miss the plane

And if you live in the U.K., they send an owl notifying you of your selection/invitation to participate in the respective testing opportunity. This may or may not lead to a trip to Diagon Alley and eventually Hogwarts..

 

Also, typically the original post will let you know how testers will be notified and roughly when they will be announced

And if you live in the sticks like some of do they send smoke signals or carrier Pigeon. Usually they do the former since the Pigeon is subject to get lost finding me   :D
