Smart sole

Recommended Posts

My wife has been struggling lately to get out of our bunkers (soft sand ). Our instructor recommended she try a Cleveland Smart Sole S.

I did see the MGS blog write up from last year but just curious if anyone is using one of these.

I purchased one when I started the Launcher HB iron review. It is great for fluffy sand. Gets me out every time as long as I hit sand first. In firm sand I have struggled with it and found that the regular CBX wedge was better. I used to use my 58* for full shots but can't hit this at all for anything other than sand or short chip shots. All in all a good purchase for me since getting out of the sand was my priority.

Paging MattF.....

He has one and he let me hit it when we played. Getting out was a piece of cake, but I had no clue how hard to hit it.

We have some deep pot bunkers - and issue there?

Boy I wish I could help you here but have never played from a pot bunker. It gets the ball up quickly but I'd hate to give the thumbs up without that experience first hand.

What he said ^^^^^^^.   It is awesome out of fluffy sand and I found it useful from pretty much anywhere except really tight lies.  I think she would benefit from gaming one.

I took mine out of the bag for about 1 week earlier this year, and it went right back in - immediately saved me from 2 bunkers.

It's a piece of cake out of the majority of traps I've been in, save for really wet or hard packed sand. I've found that it really can be a one trick pony, though. I've tried chipping and pitching with it and it's tough, as it really wants to dig into the turf.

Thanks guys! At this time she needs a 'one trick pony' since lately she's been in just about every bunker on our course. Also since she only has 12 clubs in her bag, so having a specialty club won't hurt.

I almost bought the Smart Sole, but decided on the Callaway Sure Out wedge and I have been happy with it.  The Smart Sole is only 58º but the Callaway is available in 56, 58, 60, and 64, but there isn't a Ladies model as far as I know.  They are available with steel shafts with a D4 swingweight; the graphite shafts have a D1 swingweight.  The Smart Sole swingweight is D5 in steel and graphite, and the Ladies is C8 in graphite.

It works great out most any bunker here, even wet sand.  It's also a great club out of thick rough; I get better contact than with my SCORs.  Give the Sure Out a look.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
