New Head on Shaft Question

Recommended Posts

My apologies if this was already covered.

I have a set of TT AMT Black shafts that I bought some used JPX 919 Hot metal heads to put on.  The shafts have tip weights in them.  I was wondering if it is necessary to remove the tip weights prior to putting on the new ferrules/heads.

I appreciate any guidance that can be provided.

Thanks!

Couple of thoughts to share with you.

First, depending on how tight the fit is between shaft and the hosel of the head you're installing it's possible that the head will want to resist seating completely because the shaft weight is preventing the pressure from being able to "vent" up the hollow shaft.

Second, and this will frustrate  you a bit, it depends on the weight of the shaft tip weight, length of the club, and weight of the head.  In other words it might provide you a heavier swing weight than you're used to.  What I, personally, have done in those situations is "dry assemble" the components and check length and swing weight before mixing any epoxy.

Hope that's helpful.

The inability to vent was what I was worried about.  The tip weights have holes that I considered drilling through to allow air to escape, but seems like I should just remove them.

Thanks for the insight

The tip weights were installed to make up for light head weights to obtain a particular swing weight.

The 919s IMO run a bit light however it is unknown the size of the weight in each shaft as they certainly can be different.

lastly and already posted is the fit of the shaft into the head. the 919s are .355 and hoping the AMTs are also 355 at the tip.

If that it true and the weight can be in the way making for a sloppy fit.

Id take them out, do the dry fit as suggested and then weight them to your liking (if needed) and have fun making the set.

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.
