Broke 80 again.. For some reason this one didn't seem to flow as good as the first time I broke 80.. Lots of rescue shots but pretty good putting

I finally got to about 85% back from the last four days under the weather.  I drove the ball pretty well with 71% fairways hit at decent lengths.   I just had too many unforced error approach shots and barely missed putts (as seen in the strokes gained chart on the bottom) which yielded me an 85.

image.png.cf1761cc40fc349d7dd26455eabcdc08.png

Below is a comparison of the shots gain over the last 10 rounds (left chart) versus today's round (right chart):

image.png.f25b9dcedd58e2ee74e51ff1f850c7fd.png  image.png.38c5a3051a4e295f0e11112714c757e4.png

Too often, I put myself in reasonable position (length and in the fairway), but failed to execute a decent approach shot.   It's easy to see that today' poor approach numbers trickled down to less than average performance in my short game and putting.  The 27putts wasn't too bad but I only 4 up and down pars on the scorecard.

I'll have another two days to fully recover before a weekend full of golfing.  By the time I play in Saturday morning men's league and Sunday's Lower Keys Golf Association monthly scramble to support the Key West High School golf team and junior golf I'll be a year older.   Hopefully, I'll get an extra stroke to help celebrate my birthday!

First 18 hole round in 2 months, coming off a shoulder injury. I'm still not 100%, and extremely rusty. I said at the beginning of the round I'd be happy to break 90 - well, almost. The score was poor, the day was awesome, and it will only get better from here.

After playing TPC San Antonio, one of the home courses seemed easy. A no stress 2 under. Blue tees rating 69.1 and 123 slope. Hit 10 fairways, 13 greens and had 30 putts. A good short game can make up for a lot of misses!

Play like a champion today!

Scrambled the entire way around the course today as all facets of the game put forth challenges at various times. 10 of 14 FIR, 8 of 18 GIR, 35 putts. Was a poor ball striking day to say the least. Most disappointing is putting performance; however, I am expecting a package from @rkj427 tomorrow that I will begin practice with this weekend to gain some consistency and get it under control.

Just when I thought I was going to go 3 straight rounds without losing a ball ... I top my driver right into the creek on 18

Despite that and a couple missed puts from 4' and in .... still happy with the day ... not a great finish to the round, but great weather, good people, and a good score are always fun.

My first submittal.  I hope I have done it correctly.

Had a bit of a rushed start.

walked the course, barely made it, and so exhausted, made a bunch of mistakes on the back. hopefully i can get out more and get stronger. after the first nine, the back nine today, i was on pace to match my pr of 84. through 12 holes, still on pace. then I lost it. flubbed an easy chip to turn a sure par into a double on 13(4), then lost my only two balls of the day on opposite sides of the fairway on 14(5). i was able to hold it together down the stretch but just barely, and opportunity lost. still with 1 bird, 6 pars and 5 singles, a great round with some great moments. I just need to increase my stamina, so when the temp drops below 90 i can walk 36. having spent the last 5 years on mostly flat courses, these alabama hills are kicking my ass.

I note that all with all players the "Gross Strokes over/under par" and the "Net score to par" values are the same value.  Should there not be a difference between "Gross" and "Net" due to the handicap system?

Example:

  • Course Handicap = 11
  • Course rating = 70
  • Gross score = 80
  • Net score = 80 - 11 = 69
  • Net score to par = 69 - 70 = -1

Am I missing the ball? (which I often do on the course....)

Fun round. Started off with a great par, followed up by an okay bogey. A quick double on the next sent me to 3 over before a nice up and down par on what I find the hardest par 3 on the course. Unfortunately another double on the following par 5 meant 5 over, but things started to turn around from there.

A simple par on the 6th hole, follwed by a sand save for par on 7 then a simple 2 putt par on 8 and up and down on 9 meant I had 4 straight pars. That continued on 10 and a poor effort putt on 11 left me with 6 straight pars.

My playing partner and I got to talking and a unfocused tee shot was duffed, but a striped 7 wood then wonderful up and down chip resulted in again another par.

Hole 13 was unfortunate as I didn't double check my yardage and went over the green on my apporach and walked away with bogey.

Par on 14 got me back on track, birdie on 15, par on 16, par on 17 with yet another up and down and finally a simple two putt par on 18 means 5 over!

Things were rolling and was just a fun round.

With further inspection it seems that the calculation method of the VCT had changed roundabout 07/06/2024.

I note GolfSpy_BEN's posts on 07/06/2024 and 04/21/2024, so the issue is resolved as a work in progress.

  • Callaway AI Smoke 4Hybrid (set at 22* & replacement for the 4 iron) (208yd)
  • Callaway Apex Pro 19 (5 to A) Irons
  • Wilson Staff Dynapower SW (1975)

Also a note for you as I believe there is no longer net scores tabulated for the VCT. As we have flighted the VCT so handicaps aren’t need

9 hole par 36 course. Played a 9 hole round.

Not a great day at least compared to my last two rounds. The three penalties hurt.  I did get one par today on a whole I usually struggle on.

for me anyway it’s a lot less fun not having your handicap factor in to your score on the board. i’m sure the lower handicaps like it better though, so high handicap’s enjoyment level isn’t necessarily a reason to change anything.

Played a round a couple days after we had about 5 inches of rain, and the course was still very soggy, and some standing water in the low laying areas.

Warm and humid day here too, and slower play on the back 9 as they were sending groups off the back before those making the turn.

Hit 9 of 14 fairways, never had issues with those missed, as they were all less than 5 yards off.

Hit 7 of 18 greens, some due to poor club selection on my part, or going for pins on the corners of the greens.

Rain headed back here Sunday through Tuesday, so my next round will be mid-week or later.

What I’m saying is the leader board is nice to look at but is irrelevant for competition. Members are flighted by their scores so you are competing with members that score similarly as you without the need for a handicap.   The points you get each week are against your flight and no one else.

Also I’m just trying to explain. I have put basically zero input into how this is run.  @GolfSpy_BEN can explain a million times better than me as he has put a ton of work into this but from what I seen last year there are a ton a “vanity” handicaps or false scores in my opinion.

I understand everyone is trying to get better but a golfer shouldn’t hit or better  their handicap as often as I remember seeng it hit
