A Day at the course

Had today off, so after the "Honey Do' List I grabbed my clubs at headed off to the golf course. Played the front 9.....had more than the normal sucky shots, so after the front 9 I got a large bucket of balls and headed for the range. As I really need work on my short game I grabbed the old PW for some 100 yard shots. At the range theres a smallish "green" measuring about 10 yards in diameter with a red flag in the middle. I actually hit the first shot really well, watched it sail through the air thinking how nice it looked, glanced down at the flag to verify that it was indeed on line with the flag. As it desended, feeling pretty good about the shot, then "plunk" !!! it landed about 5 yards short !!!  "WHAT" , I was positive I had a good clean 100 yard shot, that sucker should have hit the little stinkin' green. Set up another...."smack" another good clean shot, looked awesom sailing through the air, then "plunk"....5 yards short. I thought to myself "how am I not making it to the green?" So this pattern continued, I'd chunk a few, I'd blade a few that sailed waaay over the little green. But the ones I struck clean, that sailed high and awesom all landed short. A real head scratcher for me.

Finally after about 3/4 of the bucket I managed to land one on the green "SUCCESS" I thought. Well, guess I'll end the old PW on that note. As I cleaned the club to put back in the bag I lloked at the bottom "WHAT?" After all thoes shots, some real nice one's, finally making only one on the green, I realizied that I was hitting my Gap Wedge the entire time, for me the Gap is a solid 90 yard club....."DOH" a real Homer moment for me.

I can tell you as I approach 60 that getting old is not for the faint of heart. I'm finding more and more that I'm making minor clubbing errors, that other day during league my approach was 90 yards out. "Easy" I thought, grabbed the GW, line up the shot...."swing!!!". Imangine my horror as I struck the ball clean only to watch it sail 30 yards OVER the green.....I look at the bottom of the club, and yep!!..you guessed it, I had a 9 iron, not a gap wedge. So now I have my league partner checking my clubs!!! (lol)

Gotta love this game.....

Chris

Ha.  Funny stuff.  Many years I was paying a 165 yard par 3 that I had played dozens of times and knew it was a solid 6 iron.  Grabbed the club struck it solidly and watched it land 40 yards short in th junk.  My playing partner looked at me like WTF?   I was shocked walked back to the cart and noticed I was putting the 9 iron back in the bag.  Showes it to my buddy who gave the look and said, didn't you notice the loft difference.   I just said , apparently not.  😳

We do do some stupid things in this game we love!

My father-in-law, who I was as close to as his daughter I married, is who I played most of my golf with for casual rounds and he used to scratch a line under the nine iron so that he wouldn't grab the wrong club. Before he did that, he would swap 6 and 9 so often and it would just drive him NUTS! I've seen him line up, take a big swing (it was always a big swing because "finesse" was NOT in his golfing vocabulary), hit the ball and pose, only to see the ball fly over or fall short more times than I could ever count. This thread makes me smile - he was such a dear father and friend and I miss and love him so much.

Didn’t Paul Casey do this at the tour championship? He hit what he thought was perfect shot, and it flew about 20 yards past where he was trying to land it, he looked puzzled, and then at his caddie, but the caddie didn’t pull the club for him, he pulled it himself. Then he just laughed a bit .
