36 hole June meetup:

Looking at June 10th for Ashland CC & Brookside GC in Ashland, Ohio. Tee off at Ashland between 8-9 AM then Brookside around 2 (depending on # of spies). If you only want to play 18 that is fine too, you can pick morning or afternoon round, and I'll make sure to include you in the groupings. Bring friends, spouses, kids...this is open to everyone who wants to play!

Ashland CC is classic county club founded in the 1920s that went public close to a decade ago. The course was laid out by Willie Park Jr., a contemporary and sometimes partner of Donald Ross, so expect that old-style golf course.

Brookside looked in rough shape a few years ago, but the city purchased it and now that it's a muni has seen a complete overhaul. It's a Hurdzan/Kidwell design. These two built courses all over Ohio in the 60s & 70s so you're probably familiar. Trademarks are big greens, wide fairways, and courses that play a bit longer. Big ballparks where you can rip driver.

Just back from vacation. Still thinking 36 in june?

For the Cleveland suburb members: My son and I played at Bunker Hill today in Medina. I thought it was very challenging with lots of hills, a few narrow fairways and at least 2 blind holes. Price wasn't bad at $52 including cart. BTW the carts have GPS screens. Only issue today was they had 5 holes that were cart path only - I think I need a nap 😜

There is a guy in our league that plays there fairly often. I've never been there because I have heard that they over-pack the course on weekends. I don't need 5-6 hour rounds in my life.

Good to know the course was good though - sounds like a good place to go on a weekday.

It's not far from me, but I've played it twice and both rounds were over 6 hours, so I have no interest in going back. Can confirm they double book tee times and never turn away walkups. So I have no desire to go there ever again. I will play Pleasant Valley around the corner from them, they are one of my favorites and I've never had trouble with a long round or getting a Sat/Sun tee time.

We really lucked out playing on Monday then - no one ahead of us til we hit 17 and a 2some  that was 2 holes behind us. Alex and I were able to finish in 3.5 hrs. I'll let him know about 5-6 hr weekend games since he liked the course.

Let's start planning a meet up for August. I'm thinking Ashland or Deer Ridge. Any other suggestions?

The 6th is my anniversary so that weekend is out. But the 12th/13th, 19th/20th, or 26th/27th I can set something up. Let me know what works the best.

I hope you can play with us one more time before you leave Ohio. Also, I need an excuse to go play Eagle Creek, Sawmill Creek, or even Valley of the Eagles if you want to meet up. Right now I can get out during the week too.

Any of those 3 would work for me. The improvements at Sawmill should be done. Eagle creek is always good. Never played Valley of the eagles.

Depending on the weekend I might be interested in crashing the Ohio party for a round with my Forum friends.  You're a lot closer than driving to NC for the mid-Atlantic meetups.

Stonelick... 😆

I'd love to and maybe one day. I have two little ones at home right now so 0% chance I can go that far.

I was half joking anyway... Tbh, i live 5miles from the place and still havent been there myself LOL

Its hard for me to justify the price when i already pay for a membership at Legendary Run and can play  18 for $22

I'm definitely gonna go over there this fall after the price drops down for the winter though...

It would be fun to get the Southern Ohio spies together, but given what they want for 18 during the summer, I think you are absolutely right that fall would be a good time to check it out. It’s one of the few public courses in the area I haven’t played, but I’ve always wanted to

Hey Columbus spies - I had too much free time the other night and went through GolfNow's course database. Here's a list, not in any specific order of Columbus/Central Ohio courses that look good. Most of them have an architect I know about (Ross, RTJ, Hurdzan/Kidwell/Fry, Arthur Hills) or seem to be a great layout. Let me know if anything should be added or removed. Basically if it's been mismanaged and the conditions have gone down the tubes, or if it's a tee time factory with 6 hour rounds.

Deer Ridge -- Westchester -- Pine Hill -- Table Rock -- Airport -- Champions -- Raymond Memorial -- Delaware -- Glenross -- Dublin -- Royal American -- Sycamore Creek -- Mentel Memorial

Thorn Apple -- Denison -- Apple Valley -- Foxfire -- Darby Creek -- Vernon View -- Virtues -- Split Rock -- Cumberland Trail -- Turnberry -- Safari -- Blacklick Woods

And here are the courses I saw that looked interesting, but couldn't find any info on them. So let's call them maybes...

St. Albans -- Bucyrus -- Village View -- Oakhaven -- Valley View -- Raccoon Valley -- Homestead Springs -- Groveport -- Clover Valley -- Kyber Run -- Echo Springs -- Pebble Creek

Rolling Meadows -- The Ridge -- Chapel Hill -- Irish Hills -- New Albany -- Mastodon -- Trout Club -- Willow Run -- Shelby Crossing -- Bent Tree -- Kings Mill

I havent been there for at least 15yrs but we used to have a family outing at Split Rock and i played it several times... I remember it being a decent course, with some fun elevation changes but it was always very firm... To the point we'd call it Hard as a Rock. But like i said, it's been a long time since i played it.
