Kenny B
All that great practice the last couple of days was a waste of time. No more practice for me!! I did not hit one good driver all day... not one, and my driver is usually a reliable club, even if my drives are shorter than I would like. I had been working on getting my right hip deeper in the backswing, and on the range I had been hitting great shots. Not today. Shot 45/40 for 85. On the par 4 #7 and par 3 #8 holes... two of the holes I need to birdie for the 2020 Challenge, I went triple, double with no penalty shots!! I hit 6 tee shots with my driver that were all within 50 yards of the Forward Tees. Sad! I could blame the weather. I broke my rule of never starting a round in the rain (I can generally wait an hour and not play in the rain). The course irrigates all night long, and about 3am we had a T-storm pass through. Lots of standing water. Teed off at 7-30am and played in light rain until we made the turn. I was soaked. My score would have been a lot worse, but I hit some good wedges and made a few 8-10 footers to save par. cksurfdude, Rickp, CarlH and 3 others 6 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

The pin locations didn't help, literally all 18 pins were no more than 5 paces on. I'm just not good enough to attack tucked pins -- every.single.green. Playing to the middle of the green was leaving me 30 footers consistently, and that's not going to get it done when you only hit 6 greens. Hit one OB, and a 6i into the drink and yeah, you shoot 12-over on 9. This is from the back of the green, the approach is uphill and over water and the pin was legit 2 days paces on. Buddy got up and down nicely, if you look closely that was his chip from off the green. 18th hole pin front left corner with everything sloping back at you Probably the most fair placement today, but still only feet from the fringe. Requiring really good distance control in a 2 club wind kind of day. Probably the 2nd worst one today. 2 paces on guarded by a deep bunker. Days like this make being an amateur golfer really frustrating and I don't understand the point. /endrant artful_golfer, MaxEntropy, Rickp and 9 others 12 Quote Driver: GT3 Ventus TR Black 5 S 3w/5w: TSi2 Tensei AV Raw Blue S 4h: CLK 22* Hybrid Tensei CK Pro Blue 80HY S Irons 5-PW: 223 Steelfiber PR 95 S Wedges: 50, 54, 58 Steelfiber PR 105 Putter: DF3 x Accra Ball: Tour B X
2puttbogey
Got to play at Kapalua Plantation today. The wind was blowing pretty strong at 20 mph with stronger gusts, but that's kinda normal there. juspoole
Played Friday in perfect weather conditions. Course was in great shape and was hitting the ball well. 76 (did not have a birdie, definitely would have helped) 8/14 fairways (3 others barely off and 3 double cross that ended in hazard) 11/18 GIR 35 putts (still not making as many as I should, did not have a yipped stroke all day and on the course thought I was putting better than this) Majority of approach shots were in 20 - 30 foot range minus maybe 3 good looks at birdie Very happy with how I hit driver and the overall game. Popular Post edingc
Saturday Morning - 40/41 = 81 (+9) - 10/15 FIR - 7/18 GIR (1 birdie) - 33 Putts (1 3-putt, 13 2-putts, 4 1-putts) As my driver goes, typically so does my rounds. Not particularly long with anything, but I kept the ball in the fairway and putted really well for me. Just one or two shots away from sliding into the 70s, and I birdied No. 3, which is the first time I've done that in two years of playing here (510-yard par 5, waste area in front of green. Went driver, hybrid, wedge to about 10 feet and hit the left-to-right putt.) Had to chip out from behind a few trees and that cost me the strokes for a really nice round. Sunday Morning - 41/48 = 89 / 87 ESC (+17) - 4/15 FIR - 8/18 GIR - 37 Putts (4 3-putts, 11 2-putts, 3 1-putts) As my driver goes, so goes my rounds... hahahaha. Just didn't play well at all this morning compared to the last four or five times out. Still, for as bad as I played, I rolled in a 15 footer for par on No. 9 and made the turn with a 41. Nearly birdied No. 10 by smashing a drive so far left that it was beyond most of the trouble and bumped an 8-iron off the front mound of the green and let it trickle up to within 10 feet. Wheels came off on holes 11-13. Triple-bogeyed No. 11 after topping a 5-iron out of a poor lie, followed by tree trouble, poor approach and a three-putt. No. 12 made a poor choice to chip from the fringe rather than putt and bogeyed. No. 13 hooked two drives OB hard left and ended up sending my third tee shot behind a tree on the right side before limping away with a quadruple bogey. I did figure out the swing from 14 on, but a few mistakes and some poor putting didn't help me at all down the stretch. After a day of just horrendous driving, however, it was very redeeming to pipe one about 265 down the middle of the fairway on No. 18. The shortest club I've had into the green on No. 18 all year has been 9-iron, and today I was able to hit a smooth gap wedge pin high from where my drive landed. I have one more round on Tuesday morning before another lesson, hoping that I can put together some more positives heading into that. cksurfdude, sirchunksalot, THEZIPR23 and 9 others 12 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Popular Post deejaid
I got out for a late afternoon 9 yesterday and shot a 42. 4 pars, 4 bogeys, and a double. What made the round different was I took modern woods and driver out instead of my classic persimmon woods. Well, I did stick my Stan Thompson persimmon driver in the bag in place of my lob wedge just to have a fall back. I haven’t swung or hit a modern wood in two years but as I was cleaning out the garage yesterday I came across my modern woods I had stored away and figured I break them out for old times sake. So after a few balls at the range we go over to #1 and I pull out my modern driver, a Cleveland Classic Custom XL. I tee one up and proceed to hit one high and right...onto the #9 fairway. I decided to hit another since it’s been a long time since I’ve hit a modern driver and proceed to hit the exact same shot. I walk to my balls and they are literally 5 feet apart on the 9th fairway! I guess you could say I was consistent. After bogeying 1, #2 is a layup hole due to a creek running across the fairway 230 out. It’s a tough carry with persimmon and after my two tee shots on 1 I decided it best to hit a 4-iron. I smoked the Arias 4-iron and actually reach the creek, going into the tall reeds at the edge. Ended up bogeying #2 as well. #3 is a Par 5 and decided to pull out the modern driver again, and again sent it right. Enough was enough. While my buddy hit his drive I went over and grab my Stan Thompson persimmon driver. I proceeded to launch a drive right down the middle 250 yards. That’s more like it. Ended up parring #3 then took the double on #4. It wasn’t due to the drive though, I flew the green on the second shot down into a waste area well below the green behind some trees. We had wind gusts of 30 mph yesterday so coupled with the fact it was only my second round with the Arias irons, club selection was a bit tough. Last 5 holes I went par, par, bogey (on a little 135 yard par 3, again flying the green), par, and bogey on 9 but hit every fairway including a 260 yard drive on 9 that got wasted by a 9-iron shot coming up short due to the wind. So I learned a few things yesterday. One, the persimmon woods are staying in the bag...precision beats distance every time. Two, the Arias irons are the real deal. Great feel, long, and very forgiving. And three, I am now a mallet putter guy. Also new to my bag is the Rife Legend Z mallet putter I decided to take back from my wife. I had tried it a few years ago but didn’t really like it so gave it to her. I put an extension in it since I had cut it down for her, but this time I regripped it with an oversized round non-taped grip, same I use on all my other clubs. What a difference the round grip makes! Feels so much more natural than a traditional flat putter grip. I have a new confidence in my putting. Popular Post cksurfdude
Drove with my wife about 45-50 minutes (east of here) to where we could get a tee time on short notice, on a 9 Hole course we played for the first time (we'd played the 18 there once last year .. nice course and during that round thought I might be on the way to my first breakthrough of 90 but made a mess of a few holes on the back 9). The opening Par 5 on this 9 is interesting - you hit over water twice (first off the tee and then the second shot) - and yours truly managed to drown two golf balls on his attempted second shotS on his way to an opening Quadruple Bogey. Goodbye new scoring record day Second hole straightforward Par 4 -> scratched out a Par. Kinda surprised myself and thought ok we're back in the game. #3 Par 3 slightly uphill - pushed the shot right, which curved further right, a playing partner found it next to the OB fence, took a (free, I hope!) drop (..as I managed to do this very same trick again on #8), good pitch on but crossed the ridge where the flag was and rolled out to the back edge -> 3-putt Double. Fourth and fifth holes "saved" bogeys after both tee shots again put me into trouble spots. #6 short Par 3 and actually hit the front edge of the green .. although as we walked up I realized the pin was further back on the green and not towards the front, so note to self: you should probably wear your glasses when playing golf .. first long putt was tap-in close -> par. #7 slight dogleg right short Par 4 - popped up a hybrid tee shot that actually landed in the fairway - only other fairway after #1 - and then pulled off a *great* 7i to the front edge of the green and maybe 12-15 feet below the flag .. "easy" 2 putt par. #8 after yet another duffed tee shot went right into the trees and ended up next to the fence again .. drop .. punch out .. wedge on was good .. first putt was tap-in close .. another bogey save. Closing Par 5 is the longest hole and keeps bending around to the right from tee to green - but there's me with another tee shot faded short-right into trouble again, followed by a tactical error trying to take a full swing to advance the ball, followed by a solid punch out into a good position in the fairway with just enough of a "look" past the last trees before the green to have a shot at it, followed by a *great* 9i that hit the front of the green and rolled up a bit, followed by a great first putt that just grazed the edge of the hole for a finishing "almost par" (lol) bogey. Total damage = +10 (Par 36) with those two penalties on #1 and one 3-putt. But... considering the awfulness of my tee shots it was not all bad as the short game was working well .. which is, naturally, the complete opposite of my prior 9 hole round where I was hitting solid tee shots into fairways and the short game was fighting me. Rickp
Shot a 103 today, which is okay but not great for me. Was playing pretty decently and almost holed a bunker shot on 14. A couple of holes later, I realized I left my 58 degree Cleveland Full Face wedge on hole 14. After that, the fact that I left the club was in the back of my mind and I started playing poorly after that. Hoping someone turns it it, its a private club so I am guessing it will be turned in. I went back to look for it when I was on 17 because the tee box is near the 14 green, but the club wasn't there.Hope someone turns it in and you get it back. yungkory, CarlH, cksurfdude and 1 other 4 Quote Rick Left Hand, Driver; PXG 0311XF Cypher 50 gr Senior 5 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 7 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 5 hybrid; Cally Steelhead, Hazardous R2 Irons; Mizuno JPX 923HM 7-GW Recoil 460 F2 Wedges; Titleist S9 54*, Mizuno SW 56* Putter; Waaay too many to list

I started using the new OB rule on a particular hole at Mesa Del Sol (Yuma). I've experienced a handful of double OB's on that hole, twice on what were fantastic round otherwise. For some reason it just does not fit my eye, so being able to avoid a second backyard donation is welcomed. Mtbryant01
87 - 43/44 8 pars 9 FIRs 8 GIRs - 33 putts and 11 chips 3 penalties off the tee I played the RTJ Capitol Hill Judge Course today. I just didn’t have it today compared to an 80 yesterday. Silver lining is no 3 putts, just couldn’t sink the birdie. Struggled on pulling the tee shots on Par 3, mainly my 6 and 7 iron. I’m not sure if it was because I was hitting over marsh/water and trying to muscle it instead of trusting my shot. I know what I’ll be working on the range soon.
