I am very excited to be selected and can’t wait to begin testing. Like many of you I want to see how these clubs compare at their price point but if Costco can make an affordable set of Irons my expectations are high for BGD.

I am available and here to answer any questions. Let em rip just like a big fairway on a par 5

Everyone stinks, yes even the pros. Have fun

So looking forward to all the testers results. I have the OG collection and look forward to seeing all of your thoughts. I've played roughly 8 rounds now and I am working on getting 10-12 in to write an informal review.

It can be hard to keep track of all the new brands being introduced into the golfing market. Equally, it is very difficult for those same brands to get noticed. For this testers wanted opportunity, we are introducing Byrdie Golf Design, a company focused more on building golf clubs for a community of golfers looking to enjoy the sport without spending a fortune.

image.png

Byrdie Golf Design Clubs

We have a unique testing opportunity with Byrdie Golf Design where products across their whole lineup will be put to the test. This includes the BGD Essential full bag of golf clubs.

Within their line of golf clubs, Byrdie Golf offers The Gilmore Collection that includes a driver and fairway wood, as well as several iron sets. We have four iron sets that are being made available for testing (The OG, Vandal, Goat, and Divot Collections). Finally, applicants can register for the Byrdie Golf Design Grind wedges.

Byrdie Golf Design has put a focus on the amateur golfer, which is evident by the Club Finder Quiz. The quiz is less analytical and more focused on who you are as a golfer. There is a clear tone when taking the quiz that golf should be fun and enjoyable. While the products definitely matter, the enjoyment of being on the course and part of the golfing community should be a high priority.

Please welcome and congratulate our testers!

Congratulations to those who were chosen. This topic really interest me as I love to see direct to consumer options grow. Not that I have anything against the larger brands, I really do not. But I think Golf should be made more accessible as far as spending is concerned. These direct-to-consumer manufactures really open the door for beginner golfers to get a great bang for the buck on their first new clubs.

It's all people who are involved in clubfitting and clubmaking, plus a couple of the editors from Links magazine (I think that three of them were on the 2022 trip that I took, organized by the same group -- Perry Golf runs the tours for Links magazine).  The size of the groups are always limited to 24 or 32 golfers, and Perry Golf does an absolutely fabulous job organizing and running things (they are headquartered in Glasgow, but have a US office in the D.C. area and another at Pinehurst).

Hello Spies

Im here enjoying Easter weekend with the family prepping to write my intro coming Monday. I will be testing the Goat (bahhhhhh) irons soon. I figured in my intro I’ll answer any question you might have for me and BGD. Can’t wait to take everyone on this wild ride. Think Willy Wonka in that trippy tunnel. Ahhhhhhhhhh

  • Can these wedges be the ones that get more people involved and interested in enjoying golf more?
  • Will they perform well enough that their price point justifies choosing them over other well-known brands?
  • In the future, will Byrdie offer different grip and shaft choices?

STAY TUNED

I'm curious how this direct-to-consumer brand compares to my set in terms of the numbers and performance. What are you getting for this great price point and are they something that can be used by players who need a lower price, but want great performance?

Hoping that this makes sense. I am going into this with an open and curious mind and can't wait till they get here.

I am receiving the Goat irons and have high expectation for quality and performance. With Takomo bringing DTC irons to the forefront thanks to MGS most wanted test, I see no reason why BGD cannot deliver a high performance iron for the value.

Additionally, while my PXG gen 2 tours are significantly more expensive they were released 5 years ago. I expect the new technology 5 years later to compare similarly or better.

Hello again Spies,

My brain won't stop thinking about these Byrdie Design Grind Wedges...LOL

Per their Website:

Club Specs:

  • Wedges Included: 52, 56, 60
  • Cast iron 431 stainless steel heads
  • Apollo Shaft: Stiff Flex
  • USGA conformed

I'll assume they'll come in standard lie, loft and shaft lengths. With that being said, when I was fitted for wedges three and a half years ago the lies and lofts were standard but because of my tyrannosaurus length arms an additional quarter inch was added to the shafts. I haven't used stiff shafts for a very long time and all my current clubs have graphite shafts so it'll be interesting to see how they perform for me. Their grips also look standard but I prefer jumbo size grips, even though I should use midsize ones, because they just feel better to me.

That's all for now. Any questions? I'm here to answer them to the best of my ability.

@Grip out.

You raise a fair point about customisation here - was there the ability to tailor your clubs at all to make them closer to what you may have wanted?

This isn't really in what they do typically or what they cater towards. I would imagine as they grow this could be something they look into more.

Thanks for the insight - I know a lot of the DTC start out as very "off the shelf" and build up to being able to tweak it all. Manufacturing is tough enough without all the possible deviations!
