Brandle v. Frank

Everyone in my house went to bed early last night so I had the TV and of course watched the Golf Channel.  A very interesting debate broke out between Chamblee and Nobilo over Tiger's issues.

Both argued from the Trackman numbers although there seemed to be some descrepancy over those numbers - I suspect it had to do with the time period or length of time that they took the numbers from.  Also Chamblee insisted on taking Tiger at his public word where as Nobilo does not.

So here's the essence of the debate.

For Chamblee Tiger's swing changes create too much shaft lean forcing him into a subtle reverse C (my description) move with the driver that puts pressure on the back causing his current injury.  If Tiger doesn't change his swing, he'll continue to get or be injured Chamblee argues.

Nobilo counters that Tiger's issues are the injury, that his swing speed was up over 120 last year and that his numbers suggested that he was swinging well particularly the higher launch rates on his driver.  Right now he should be judged against other players returning from a similar injury and medical procedure.

Chamblee states that the increased launch rate with the driver supports his view because Tiger has to contort himself to get the ball into the air and Tiger said up until last Sunday that his back was fine.  Tiger's inconsistent misses, block right, snap hook left are proof that his, Chamblee's theory, is right.

The debate was somewhat heated which didn't bother me all though Lerner and Begay seemed taken aback.

I'm sure lots of people here have their own opinions.  Can we please here this one time confine them to golf and leave personal feelings one way or another about Tiger aside.  Anyone want to join in a discussion about his golf swing and health issues?

I agree with Chamblee, Tiger is lunging more now than before. This will continue to cause undue stress on the back.  He should eliminate the lunge and strive for a smoother swing.

I agree that his new swing is causing his back problems. The lunging that he does in his swing is exactly the type of stuff that my teacher wants me to stay away from because I was already developing some back soreness because of my swing earlier in the season.

I don't know much about the techinicalities of his swing changes over the years but, I do know that he's a mess.

I don't care about his personal life or what he does/doesn't do off the course. I enjoyed watching what is arguably the greatest golf talent we have ever seen play the game. I still do. I think he has enough left to surpass Jack if he can get straightened out. Time will tell.

Nice link - I noticed that Frank and Brandle played nicey, nicey post round today.  I didn't mind the debate, it was passionate.  Who here doesn't get passionate when arguing a point now and again.

Tiger seems certain that he's on the right track and that he just needs to get stronger in order to protect his physical health - back health especially.

Going back to Silver and Black I'm also one who really doesn't care much about the personal stuff.  I did see Jack in his prime though and that was also impressive.  Jack used regular events as prep for Majors much more than Tiger did.  For those who never saw Jack play you really need to look at his Major record in the 70's - it's beyond sick, every bit as dominant as Tiger's peak.  I saw them both, they both were amazing.  I remain convinced that what will cost Tiger the record is his putting, not his back or his personal life.

But boy would I love to see him return to form.  Imagine a healthy Tiger, playing well going head to head with Rory.  Mix in a Ricky Fowler and a Phil or Furyk having a good week now and again.  That would be great for golf.
