The Loft Game

I've been putting a lot of thought into this lately. It's is very simple, at least it makes sense to me.

When I get my new irons in the spring I am going to have the trackman distance stamped into them.

So my 150 club will say 150, I figure it will boost my confidence. No guessing, just look at the number on the club and pull the trigger. Obviously this will be for full shots only.

I plan on having the (numbers) filled in and just a yardage on the club. That way when someone asks me what club I just hit, I can say, 185...

What do you think?

Why are you so obsessed with this? I guess I could see it from an older guy who remembers when there were standard lofts for each iron. But in a day when Titleist is offering a PW that's a 43? You have to just accept it for what it is and move on.

The thing that matters is that you know how far each one of your clubs will carry and if applicable where they will run out to after that.

I've always given the yardage answer if someone asked me what club I hit. When I was younger I was much longer and better than the guys I played with in casual rounds and of course people don't concern themselves with such things in competitive rounds or they shouldn't. Today it just doesn't matter so I give them the standard yardage for the club.

But what if your yardage numbers change? There's a wide variety of reasons that could happen.

Would you just cross out the stamp and stamp a new one?

While I kind of understand your logic, I also like to think about how far a club goes if I hit it a little harder or softer and how the ball reacts when I do that. For instance, I hit my gap wedge 110 and my PW 125, but I will often play my PW at 110 if I want to finesse the ball in to the hole and not produce as much spin. On the other end of the spectrum, I can swing a little harder at my wedge and get 130 out of it with more spin when I need to. To me, it would be better to write these type of things down in a book you carry, so you can consider all the distances and spin/flight possibilities of each club. I don't like to lock myself into saying "I hit this club this distance."

I think you should just change the numbers to letters. That way if your distances change then there is no reason to worry about incorrectly labeled clubs.

Good points.

So I get a 44-45-46 degree set "PW". Then I have to get a 49-50-51 "GW", the. The next club stepped from that.

As you've said before a lot of players don't even carry a 2,3,4, and sometimes 5 and 6 iron.. so that leaves you with a 6,7,8,9,Pw set. 5 "irons" then some carry 4 wedges.

And some data on here shows that most players benefit from a GI long irons ( I believe it is in the MP-18 blog post )

So why not just go backwards? I know distance sells, but if you can't hit the club what is it worth?

Like the cobra King MB have a "GW" in the set. It is a 50° club. I would start there. For me, I'm not going to be hitting anything but a full shot with a 50° club.

So to have a "specialist" wedge at the 50° loft doesn't make any sense for me.

I'd rather have a club that sits square, with a square leading edge for full shots.

I have too many overlapping distance club, especially from 175 in. 150 yards, I can use 6i, 7i, hard 8i, or adrenaline pumping 9i. Then there's conditions, wind, elevation, and fatigue to name a few.

Coming down to 100 yards I have to stamp almost every clubs in my bag.

You can't get to the next level hitting full shots. I don't hit a lot of full shots except for the tee shots and fairway wood(s) because it depends on how and where the pin is set. I carry 5 wedges from 46-64 and I only carry 12 clubs on my main set. It covers all of my distance.

Every clubs have multiple functions including my driver 13.5* and 14* double as 3 wood, and putter, well you know it's a Texas wedge :)

Every now and then I'd play a round with 2 maybe 3 clubs. Last time I played with 5 hybrid and 54* wedge and shot 81. I was elated.

Yeah, I have many different distances with all of my clubs. Heck, I can hit a low fade at 120 with my 57° if I need to looks like I thinned it or send it to the moon at 40 yards with a full swing.

Maybe a book would be better. I was thinking of a way to make the clubs mine. "Hand me the 200" or "Hand me the 175" and by "hand me" I mean "which club I pull"

Maybe I'll just name them all like Bryson.

Here's some naming suggestions:

4i - Lazer

5i - Loopy

6i - Larry

7i - Linda

8i - Lowanda

9i - Lucille

PW - Bill

Use it in a sentence: "I'm gonna choke Larry to combat the wind"

I name my irons after wives of Henry the Vlll. 145 downhill with the wind? That's a Catherine of Aragon. Or if I really launch my 4-iron I say, "I killed that Anne Boleyn".

This cracks me up. How about Greek letters?

What did you hit? It was my rho!

Alan you always have interesting thoughts seems this one was shot down pretty fast with good reasons. I would laugh at you going I just hit my 200 club 150 with a low shot into the wind. Think about that you like the tree less courses where you can't always play high shots. I'm getting confused just thinking about it.

Yeah. This one was a bit odd, I'll agree to that. I'm just going to start calling them random four letter words. Or original golf names.

I'd much prefer my clubs to simply have the loft stamped on them rather than an ego massaging number assigned by the manufacturer.

In the end it is about hitting the club that gives you the best chance to put the ball in the right position.   The number or loft of the club really don't matter.  I have a couple of young guys that play with my group sometimes.  I love to mess with them since they are 100% with every club.   Just hit a knockdown partial shot with a club that is 2 or 3 more clubs that they hit and make a comment about the club I hit.  Realyl gets into their head.

I did that this past weekend. Dude hit a driver, I hit my 3 iron a mile and it rolled another mile. That will really take the wind out of their sails.
