I was playing the other day & realized about half way through the round, my right hand started hurting around the base of the index finger.  I started getting a blister forming & I thought ....  what the H*** am I strangling the club so hard for??

I was wondering why I was leaving it out to the right the rest of the round?  Duh!  I had the death grip on the club.  I couldn't figure out why I was holding the damn thing so tight.  Stress, pissed off at something ... I don't know.

So at about the 16th hole, I started my normal pre-shot routine, took my grip, then before taking it away I released tension in the hands.  Say I started at a "10" really tight ... then released it to "5" mid-range ... then at the take-away it was about a "7" strength.  Hey ... low & behold, it went straight with no fade on it at all, in fact it was with a little draw.  Go figure!

SO MGS'ers ... for those of you that sometimes take a strangle hold of the club, how do you fix it?  Do you even realize that you are doing it?  Does the old adage of "holding a bird in your hand, not strangling it too tight to kill it but tight enough so it doesn't fly away" work?  What drills do you do, if any?  Do you even think about grip pressure?  My father used to tell me "the left hand controls the club (tighter) & the right hand goes along for the ride (about a 3)"

Let's hear it :)

I have a friend who runs his right index finger down the shaft. Works for him to reduce steering too much with the right hand.

This is one of my biggest problems, I always have to pay attention to my grip.  Like you, if my right hand gets too tight every thing is shorter and right.

I preach this to all my friends who struggle with the dreaded fade (SLICE).  Keep that lower hand grip loose!!!

When I address the ball I'll set the club down and take my grip and relax my hands then regrip two or three times, with a little bit less pressure each time I regrip the club.

I've found a lighter grip pressure does give me a bit more distance and better feel for the shot.

Light grip, actually more of a slight left hand toward the right and right hand toward the left, so the hands become a unit, but the individual fingers are placed lightly on the surface of the club.

I can sense it is off (too tight) when my forearms start to hurt, or if they are tight... to loosen them up I raise my arms above my head and drop them down to my sides allowing gravity (not muscle) to bring them down.  Do that a few times and your forearms will be loose and good to go.

This is one of the biggest things that i have struggled with as well. I could always start the club at address with a very light amount of pressure. but in the transition to the down swing i would end up strangling the club which would cause the club face to slam shut on the way down. Now part of that was a problem with my grip. but also a lot of it was the increase in grip pressure on the way down. The was i was able to remedy that was just practicing trying to stay really light on the way down.

It made a huge difference in my game. Probably a 10 yard increase across all my clubs and way more accuracy, because the club in now square at impact. It took me until the last month of the season to get to that point, but i dropped my handicap almost 3 full strokes. I only hope that i can bring that same wing with me to the new season.

This is a big issue for me. My instructor has me take practice swings while gripping the club with my fingertips. It helps.

I would say all in all grip pressure around 5/6 would be ideal - on the way back down to the ball gripping club with 5 or 6 pressure actually will help drop club into the slot - always exceptions to the rule steve stricker firm grip Id say 8/9

Yes, I have this problem and have to consciously keep this in check or it gets out of hand. [emoji52]
