If you only had one last round of golf to play which course would you select and why?

The old Tom Morris course at Ballyliffin, Ireland. Pure links, nothing fancy. The other Ballyliffin course is actually a nice track, but I love the moguls in the middle of the fairway & the quirkiness of links golf! The ocean views, the caddies, the locals, and entire ambience of Irish links golf. I could give up the ghost after that!

If I had one last round to play, it would be easy to select any of the truly iconic courses in the world like, Augusta, Pebble Beach or St. Andrews, etc.  Instead, I’m going to select a place, a little off the beaten path, Tara Iti in New Zealand.  Breathtaking and gorgeous and another reason to travel down under and visit Australia and New Zealand.  For my “local” choice, I would pick Banff Springs in Alberta  The majestic beauty of the Rockies never grows old.

Tara Iti is my vote as well.

Almost played there several years ago. Had the invite, had everything planned with dates and timing for flights etc with work, but just couldn't quite make the pricing work. Was going to be $4000 NZD for 2 rounds of golf. Included the room for one night... and a caddy, but no food. Still think about that a lot.

Since golf wasn't historied into my life,  I can't say I'd have the legendary ones on my list. I have walked on St Andrew's 18th though (did not play there)

My last course would have to be wherever is the truly most exotic place on earth where there is the most majestic course to be played. With the stipulation that my family is there.

As much as I'd like to say Augusta National, I know there would be no chance it could ever happen.  I'm not rich enough, famous enough or connected enough to make it ever happen.  If it was my last round ever, I'd guess I'd like to finish where it all started at The Old Course at St. Andrews.

In early July, 2022 we spend two days in St. Andrews as part of a trip to England and Scotland.  We had a chance to take a guided tour a little over a week before The Open started.  It was a magical place.  After the Old Course tour, my friend asked the starter who said we had opportunity to play The New Course that evening.  It was the first time I ever turned down golf!  We had walked 20,000 plus steps in Edinburgh, then walked 36 holes at Gullane Golf Club, then 24,000 more steps in Edinburgh the three days prior to arriving in St. Andrews.  My feet were so sore, I could hardly walk.  So I had to pass.  My friend thanked me as he didn't want to be the one who said "no!"  Of all the places we visited on that trip, my non-golfing wife thought St. Andrews was the best.  I have to agree with her!

I'm going to limit my self to replaying somewhere I've been before. That means it's the course at Jasper Park Lodge, in Alberta, where we honeymooned. We also played Banff Springs on that trip, but the experience and memories at Jasper are better.

I have always wanted to play Banff! For my choice I too choose to go off the beaten path. I love Coeur d'Alene Resort course. https://www.cdaresort.com/golf/ And for my local I would have to say The Golf Club at Devil's Tower. https://www.devilstowergolf.com/

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

A lot of choices to pull from. It would have to be something iconic though. Hard to not choose St Andrews.

Had a chance to play, but the cost and just timing would have made it way too rushed so declined and saved the 4k it would have cost. However one day I truly hope to get back and maybe have the chance to play.

I have not seen all the posters on this thread but I am sure I am not the first to say the Old Course. For me, St. Andrews is an absolute dream for me to be able to play. My family if from Scotland so for me to be able to get out there and see where my family came from and then to play the OG golf course and experience that exhilaration of being able to hit over the parking lot at 18 short of the green, among so many others. St. Andrews for me would be the absolute dream of a lifetime!

For obvious reasons I’d go with Augusta because I’ll never get to play it.

But for a more fun choice I’d go with Teeth of the Dog or Cabot Cliffs. Just something special about course that are feet from the ocean.

Kingsbarns. Played there, along with Old Course, New Course, Lytham & St. Anne's, and Carnoustie in 2008 on a bucket list trip.  Loved them all, but the visuals @ Kingsbarns were absolutely stunning.  All the views of the North Sea were very special.  I would play any of them again, but if I were to make that trip again, the one "must play" would be Kingsbarns.

Already played the Old Course (my profile pic <---  was taken on the 1st tee there with the R&A in the background). But I was playing on no sleep and honestly don't remember too much about it. So I might have to play it again. I'd probably still have to get up in the middle of the night to line up for a tee time, which is what you have to do if you don't have a pre-set tee time or a local to get you on. But I'd make sure I got some sleep before I got in line, and perhaps afterward.

Choice B would be a 36-hole day of Machrihanish and Mach Dunes, which is a ridiculous amount of unbelievable golf for a village of less than 300 inhabitants.

Te Arai is the public course. Or courses. There are two. And they cost $650 NZD to play, which right now is about $400 US.

A good number of iconic courses mentioned throughout this thread and while I would love to play any of them, I would want my last round to be the Bayonet Course in Monterey (old Ft Ord) where I was fortunate enough to have played with my father who introduced me to the game.

I would love to revisit the memories of time spent with him on course.

I would have to say either Augusta since I’ve never and probably couldn’t or Cypress Point because I have and it was amazing.  The history and reverence associated with Augusta puts its first on my list.  If I was close to home and couldn’t get to GA then it’s Cypress for sure.  A family friend is a member, I caddied for him once and about two months later got an invite to play, called in Golfing to work and played.  The course is amazing and had very few people on course when we played.

Probably either Ancil Hoffman or Hagen Oaks in Sacramento.  Strange choices I know but these were courses my Dad and his work buddies played at most frequently and who asked me to join them once and awhile when they were missing a regular.  If any group had a better time than these guys, that would be something.  They jawed and joked at one another all the time... funny as heck. I still have really fond memories of those rounds, my Dad, Lloyd, Bud, and Chuck, and haven't played either course in over 40 years.  Augusta would be a close second 😆.

For me it would also be the olde course, but with a slight ulterior motive. My father-in-law was an avid golfer, mentor, friend, and was of Scottish descent. He did manage a pilgrimage to Scotland before he died, but was unable to play St Andrews. I would take the opportunity to spread his ashes while walking down the 18th fairway.

So many different thoughts about this ...

Do I play one last round at the course I grew up on, Red Deer Golf & Country Club?

Do I play St. Andrews again?

Do I play McCleery where I've spent the last 8 years of my work life, knowing the course like the back of my hand?

Do I dare take my game to Augusta, Pebble, Torrey, Beth Page, Kapalua or any of the amazing courses they play Opens at?

Such a great question and really no answer for me.

I'm just hoping I don't have that situation facing me for a good many years to come. I feel my best golf is ahead of me and I don't want anything to cut my time short.

Cheers and FORE!
