Drinking my last bottle of Bellarine Estate 2007 Shiraz. Delicious cool climate Shiraz, very different from stereotypical Australian Shiraz. I have a soft spot for this wine, as I helped make it. My mate who was the winemaker was in hospital after a winery accident, leaving me to process 10 tonnes of grapes. It's still travelling well, with vibrant red fruits, great balanced acidity and spicy black pepper on the finish. Went a treat with roast lamb.

I hope some of you guys in Georgia will go to a Braves baseball game and report back on the beer they are selling at the stadium.  Baseball bat shavings in the beer??

With some help from the Terrapin Beer Company of Athens, Ga., SunTrust Park will be offering a brand-new "Chopsecutioner" beer which is aged atop wood from real Mizuno baseball bats.  Sounds like a home run to me!!

Had three beers two glasses of wine and a glass of Sangria after a tough day at SeaWorld in Orlando. Don't remember the brands but they were good (it's apparently food and wine week @ SeaWorld so I did what the other tourists did )

Grand Cru craft beers

Rhinebeck, NY

This was a great place (Grand Cru in Rhinebeck) .. all the locals plus some other faves from around the country plus a bunch of other labels and varieties heretofor unheard of (by me).

 

We (honey and I and a friend who lives about 30 minutes away) ended the evening here. I had a Keegan Farms (local to Hudson Valley) IPA, as did our friend, and my honey even went for a Saison - similar to a Session IPA but slightly "lighter".

 

There are a lot of interesting types on tap, continually rotating, of course, as they run out, listed on the big chalkboard in the back.

 

Started the evening off .. in the oldest continually serving pub in the Continental States (inside the Beekman Arms .. reportedly George Washington was in here!) .. with a Capt Lawrence Pale Ale (not the IPA) as that was the best thing on tap.

 

Then to the upstairs deck of The Local* restaurant for another local (forgot the name already...) IPA - pretty good but not.outstanding - followed up by a Keegan Farms Mother's Milk Stout. Not Guinness (please: nothing but Guinness is Guinness .. right??!!??) but really good - dark, thick enough but not porter-like, light creamy head (but not a Guinness) and a surprisingly nice taste!

 

* The Culinary Institute of America is not far from here, so if you like good meals this town is thick with really good, tho some a bit upscale (ie. $$$), restaurants.

 

Oh, and yes - there are a number of golf courses within about a half hour of here, and we'd wanted to play, but it's raining today so we're walking around, window shopping, maybe a movie.

My college room mates and I have been celebrating 40 years of friendship throughout the fall and winter this year.  There final visit to Florida for the season is this week.  We intend to go to a live jazz club that allows cigar smoking.

 

But before we go when has purchased a bottle of Yamazaki 18!  I can't wait to give it a try.
