How'd you play?

Well got rained out all weekend so we decided to play 18 this afternoon in the drizzle. Sky cleared up after 3-4 holes and turned out to be the perfect weather. Shot a 97 which is decent for me. Apparently, on a few holes, I played like a pga pro. 🤣

Meh.

Very meh 9 yesterday afternoon. But at least I hit a few ok-ish approaches and putter was .. mostly .. working nicely. Greens seemed a bit slower than usual - but my first putt speed was still good, getting close to the hole - but I was consistently over-reading break and missing on the high side 🤷‍♂️

Yeah work in progress.

Tough day.

Just wasn't really happening for me. Wedge game was solid throughout (except hole 4...) and I had a lot of chances to get up & down, but I didn't putt that well.

IMG_2785.png.1222cdeac20f1676ac95c7a80b6a187a.png

Also couldn't hit a driver until hole 16.

Oh, and I made a 10 (yes... TEN) on a short par 5... 😆 A driver into the trees, chip out, 4 wood into the trees, chip out, missed the green short right with an 8-iron, hit my wedge shot thin and long of the green, duffed a chip onto the edge of the green and then... 3 putted from about 40ft. Genuinely considered taking up tennis on the 5th tee.

IMG_2823.jpg.fe00fc675bfcaa1fbd42b4eaaf0549e8.jpg

This was very much earned after that mess on hole 4... 👇

Played a round this morning with a friend I haven't been able to play with for a couple months due to his work schedule.

Both of us walked with MotoCaddy's and were paired up with 2others riding in a cart.

With basically no rain here at all for September, the greens were rock hard, but rolled fast and true.

Took my Titleist GT driver out for first round, and actually used it on way more holes than I would normally hit drive on due to the layout of this course.

So, my fairways missed were abundant, but none of them off the fairway caused any issues, just through the doglegs.

GIR's took a hit due to most green being elevated from the fairways, so no "run-ups" and those which hit the green had less than a 50% chance of staying there.

Putt total was impressive, as a lot were from the fringe and not counted as actual putts.

A lot of pictures here, showing the color change already starting, and it gives @GolfSpy_BEN an opportunity to use them in the Virtual Tour thread, and @GolfSpy AFG an opportunity to use some on the MGS social media sites if they choose to do so.

Picture perfect weather, mid 60's to start, low 80's by the end, although it was humid here today too.

New driver worked well, just needed to adjust my tee height a little lower as these tend to launch higher than the TSR models.

Ended up playing at The Country Club of Rochester yesterday while in town for a wedding. It was a beautiful day, low 80s and sunny, and the course was in great shape. I was able to get on the private course through a friend of a friend, who is a member there and played with us. Due to a slight misunderstanding (on my part), we only ended up playing 12 holes. I was fortunate just to be playing at all, but definitely bummed we didn't get all 18 in.

The course isn't crazy long, but we ended up playing the blue tees, which played at 6237 yards. In the 12 holes we played, I was +6, and shot a 40 on the front. I wasn't hitting the ball great, but I was putting lights out and had one-putts on holes 5, 6 and 7 to go par-birdie-par. Also made a long par putt on 10 after a bad tee shot.

Definitely some work to do to get more consistent off the tee and on approach, but I was proud of how I scrambled and kept my composure throughout the round. Looking forward to getting some practice in this week before my next round on Sunday. Until next time!

Played a short track in the Seattle area this weekend in a mix of sun, rain and win. It is just 5000 yards from the back tees but a nice walk and good chance to work on the worst part of my game. Hit it pretty decently (for me) off the tee. But on and around the green was absolutely lost. Worst hole of the day was driving it to 50 yards from the green and following it up with a fully botched wedge shot straight right into a little flower bed area. Took two more shots to get up to the green and followed it up with a 4 put to make an 8 on a par 4 from perfect positioning. That describes my game pretty much right now. Focusing on my short game and putting is a must.
But a day playing bad golf is better than a day not playing golf at all.

I was able to get the day off work, so I had to go play a round with my new Hybrid 5 bag and test the Opus wedges for the forum testing. Played Shawnee golf course which is a public tract here in Louisville. It's right along the Ohio River, has a nice layout and one of the best maintained courses in the city!

Overall I'm really happy firing off a +3 round of 73. First hole sucked, then on #10(par5) I was on in 2 with a 15 footer for eagle. Told myself to not leave it short...blew that sucker by almost 4 feet, then missed it! Friggin 3 putt hurt, but that's golf. Grand scheme of things, my Ping Kushin was on fire today, so was my driver and the Opus wedges! I had some really good up and downs, great bunker shots, etc. These wedges keep impressing me. 20240915_194016.jpg.80b88829031874211081635a5d34f3ca.jpgScreenshot_20240916_111422_ShotScope.jpg.06c76ff2e008ba786ec08eb487e5d218.jpgScreenshot_20240916_112140_GHIN.jpg.e68ee923ce0dadaf228a3cbc003e7a62.jpg20240915_194010.jpg.aed7752e360adfd22375cc2b6aa3dbdb.jpg

Played my local executive course. Had to get up and down a ton the first 12 holes as my draw wasn't drawing and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally, on hole 13 realized I was crowding the ball and not giving myself enough space...Shot even par the rest of the round with a few missed birdie putts. Normally sort that stuff out on the range pre-round but with range balls getting so expensive I skip the range then have a frustrating front 9... Golf is hard.

For those of you that have followed my ups and downs over the last year then today I actually felt today that my swing is back to where it was over a year ago. In July last year I was blue lighted to hospital just as Brain Harman started his final round at The Open. I had a blocked bile duct and had suffered an Acute Kidney Injury. After a week of antibiotics and some minor surgery I was released after 8 days. For the next 6 months I suffered from all sorts of stomach related issues.

This meant my golf dropped from playing 3 to 4 times a week to nothing for 2 months then gradually getting back into it. With unusually bad weather over the winter it also made it difficult when I was fit to get out and play. Anyway the season has been a bit hit and miss, but even my good rounds have been a struggle and I have had no consistency and have been losing distance .

Over the last few weeks I've felt my fitness has been improving and I've been tweaking my setup. I'm beginning to play to my handicap last few rounds were 81, 78, 79, 80. Today I shot my best round for 3 years 75 (+4), I felt comfortable and in control of my shots, I'm hoping this is the start of a good end to the season.

Played with coworkers last Thursday at one of their clubs, had just enough time to hit 10ish balls from the practice range before teeing off. Have never driven the ball better than I did the front 9. High, long baby draws then after the turn I reverted back to slicing off the tee box and punching out of trees/chipping back into fairways. Still working out what happened and need to work on pulling an iron/hybrid out when the driver isn't working to keep those high numbers off the card.

One of my better rounds of the  year, jsut killed by penalty strokes. To be fair this course has a lot of holes with "environmental areas" right off the fairway to its easy to pick up strokes quickly. Putter was on fire to help pick up the slack though, anytime I can go 18 without a 3 putt is a good day for me. Most pars in a round so far this year.

Shot a horrible 89 yesterday with 3 birdies!.  My driver is killing me...cant hit in the fairway.  Anyways, finally figured out I was overswinging.  Once I slowed down, ball striking was much better.    Oh well, there's always next time!

Played Bixby Village again today, really just to see if the high consistency at the range I saw earlier this morning would translate and for the most part I was really happy with what I saw. A big focus moving forward is definitely my pull/draw. I don't mind a baby draw but not 15 yards left. Wedges were good as usual and the putter wasn't too shabby. Driving remained consistent but nothing crazy. Good day out on the grass no doubt.

It started out with a mild to misty rain. 30 minutes in it stopped. Fortunately ot wasn't heavy enough for CPO! There were 3 of us playing.

Started off in light rain proof gear (bucket hat, pants and a pullover), then by hole 6 I was back to shorts and a polo.

VideoCapture_20240915-161936.jpg.aba7d822db807d2db7d2836658f7804e.jpg

All in all a decent day, until hole 14....

HOLE 14- There was a group that were playing speed golf I guess, because we had nobody behind us for 13 holes. They were just hitting to their green as we were teeing off. By the time we got to our balls they were on the tee box.

So we waved them by, and pulled off behind some trees about 225 yards out, and it was to the left side, about 20 feet left of the cart path.

I stood behind TWO trees. Watched the first 3 balls soar well pass 250+ yards up the middle

Heard the next guy tee off and all I hear is a whoosh, thwack, and then clunk.

The clunk?  My forehead!!! I saw stars for about 10 seconds, and realized I was on my a$$. Picked myself up, look around and the 2 I was playing with standing there wondering what just happened. All I could figure is that the ball was a low and very fast hook that went around the trees I was behind and hit the tree 6 foot past me and bounced backwards into my head.

Never heard a FOORRRE yelled out either. The group rushed up, and immediately started to apologize.... repeatedly. I took a couple minutes and did a self assessment  (I'm trained for that) and we carried on playing after they played through.  Thankfully the bev cart was coming by and I grabbed a towel and filled it with ice. No headache, no nausea, no distorted vision. And hours later I still feel fine. My forehead however, that's a different story...

Oh, and the ball?  A prov1 left dash,  that after impacting my head, ricocheted 50 feet forward back into the fairway.  😆 🤣 😂  and he played it as it layed.

Moral of the story... if you are going to let anyone play through,  wait until the next tee box!!!

Oh and I had an amazing shot on 18. But still 2 putted for par.

How bad does it look?   I would assume it is at least bruised.

Second scramble in a week today. Same course as last week (Valle Vista, Greenwood, Indiana). I played with two of my regular playing partners and one non-golfer who borrowed my 1991 set. Ha ha.

We finished 7-under and a couple of shots behind the winning team.

But the highlight for me was how well I hit my driver. AGAIN! This Ai Smoke TD Max is just a unicorn. I'm surprised how much I'm liking the stock Denali shaft too. For my swing, it's head and shoulders above the Ping G430LST it replaces. That is now cleaned up and ready for me to sell.lol

If my driver was in play and without an obstruction/tree between ball and green, we used it. I'm seeing similar length to the old Rogue ST Max LS,  but with a reliable fade or straight shot. No left misses (pull/ hook) in 45 holes!

We used my driver tee shots for 12/14 par 4&5 holes (9/12 fairways when taking my driver). The two misses were one push slice (went into some trees but not OOB) and one fade that ended up against a tree just right of the fairway.

Of course, playing in a scramble there is a lot less pressure on one's tee shots.

Arccos distances for today:

F0B35C19-5BC5-43E0-AC2E-63C4C182940F_1_201_a.jpeg.5eb7326635e7f637cfee7b10145ca956.jpeg

Arccos range and accuracy stats for driver since I put this in the bag below:

F8C844AA-BFA7-40DE-899D-D4EF881D659D_1_105_c.jpeg.9d912ed2d3f056974bb3e652a06c6837.jpeg

Most times, the left miss is me playing the fade and the ball going straight, so it's rarely a big left miss. It's still early days with this driver so hopefully the % fairways hit will increase as I continue to use it.

As comparison, the range Arccos provides for my Ping G430LST is 275-293 with a 'smart distance' of 278yds. Accuracy is 17% missed left, 38% fairway hit, 44% missed right. Closing the face on that Ping has always been an issue and led me to modify my swing to get it straight. The Callway just feels easier to swing hard with good face control.

If you get the chance to try out one of these AiS TD Max drivers, just do it. Absolute beast! Callaway have produced something special.

Later this year, when I have more Arccos and launch monitor data, I'll write up a more in-depth unofficial review.

Played friday afternoon, for the first time in about a month. Kids sports are starting to take over, but finally got a break on their action. I still make time to practice 1 day a week. But I had the best round that I can remember. It wasn’t my best score ever, but definitely the best this year. Shot a 71, even par. But what it made it feel like my best round ever, was I just get so in control of my ball, from tee to green. We have .8” of rain, since the middle of August. So conditions are fast & firm. Course was kind of crowded, at least on the front, so they let me tee off on the back. Started off with a not so good drive, but that was the only one. As I proceeded with 11/14 fairways hit. Shot +2 on the front side. +2/par 3s, +1/par 4s, -1/par 5s. I felt like I putted well, but did miss malleable birdie putts (10ft under), by lipping them out. Onto the front side, where I started out HOT! Almost drove the 1st, chipped it up to within 3”, easy bird. Drove again nicely down the middle, on a tough par 4, hit a nice 8i, to what I thought was going to be close. But when I arrived to the green, it had sucked back another 10/11ft, and left me with 42ft. Draino!! Which was a huge surprise, bc putting is where I struggle the most. -2 after 2. 3 was a par 3, which I hit a decent 9i, but the wind grabbed it & pushed it. Had 27yds to the pin, all uphill. Bogey. 4, blasted a drive down the middle, had 46yds in, knocked it to 6ft. Lipped out, horseshoe style. That’s what I’m used too. lol. 5, par 5. Driver down the middle, 4i to about 23ft. 2 putt birdie. 6, par 3, wind pushed my 7i. Failed to get up & down again. Bogey. 7, par 4, blasted another drive down the middle, almost holed my approach from 85yds. 3ft birdie. 8, par 4, almost drove the green, chipped up to 5ft, lip out again. Ughhhh. Par. 9, par 4, another drive down the middle, 62yds, wind laid on me, and I kinda nuked a lob over the green. Didn’t manage to get up & down though for a par. So the back 9 performance was +2/par 3s, -3/par 4s, -1/par 5. I had 2 VERY makeable putts on this side as well, that could’ve made this round very special.  I was so pumped, not about the score, but about the control I felt like I had with my golf swing. I felt like I was clicking on all cylinders. So much so, I tried making a tee time with friends for the next 2 days, and later this week! But as we all know, it’s here today, and sometimes gone tomorrow!

Played a practice round yesterday. Decided not to keep score on app but kept a running tally. Ended up shooting my best 9 ever. One double, two bogies, one birdie for a 39.

Would have loved to play the back 9, which is typically easier, but parental duties took precedence.

Raining the rest of the week.

Maybe next time.

Glad you are OK. From the looks of the mark it was a refurbished Titleist Pro V1 with the old 392 dimple pattern!  More reason to not buy a refurbished golf ball!

Incredible recovery shots are set up by an equally incredible miss.
