Hal Sutton’s tweet on parents/kids/fear in golf

I saw this tweet by Hal Sutton this morning and I thought it was really good advice. Sounds similar to the “hit it far first” advice that’s out there.

All in on this. Kirke doesn't try to "lag putts close": he expects to make everything. He thinks every shot should work, and he has an amazing ability to think that any shot that didn't work was some kind of aberration so that it has no effect on his confidence for his next shot.

I think golf reality eventually hits for everyone, but his enormous confidence is such an asset for him right now.

What I see is,

“let kids play and stop living your vicarious  dreams though their experience.”

Let kids be kids and have fun.

100%. Golf doesn’t own rights to the meddling parents.

Parents need to let kids just play and stop ruining sports for them.

This is such a good point and I can still remember being young and my dad did try to get me to play the safe shot, fat chance though I can totally get that 8 iron up and over that tree. Thankfully though he didn't push it too hard, but if I can get one of my kids to play I will for sure let them hit all the hero shots they want, since as we all know its only a game.

This is one of the many reasons why PGA Jr has the "no coaching or caddying" rule for their matches. Does it get followed to a T? Not all the time... but the kids are the first ones to turn around and yell at the parents if they try to tell them what to do

Wish there was a  reaction because this is so accurate. Let them enjoy the game and figure it out on their own, send this to all parents for life in general!

I spend most of my time reigning in high school golfers. It’s so much easier helping them pick their spots when they truly believe they can make any shot at any time. You can tell they’ve always just been allowed to play, which is awesome.

Yes, this just in general letting them have the autonomy to fail and learn on their own. Its hard but thankfully my wife is all in on this and will call me out on it.

Be there to pick them up when they fall, need to learn to fail, never succeed if they don’t

In college, I began refereeing/umpiring youth sports to earn some money and not have to get a "real" job.  Football, basketball, baseball and soccer.  I continued for about 20 years after college.  It pays pretty well for the time commitment.  You have to deal with the worst in people from time to time.  Having thick skin is a must.  I spent 8-years in the military so, I'm not easily intimidated either.  I found it pretty easy to calm most situations down.  But there's always the exception.

You'd be amazed at some of the stuff I witnessed.  I have told my wife and brother, I'm going to write a book on the subject one day.
