LOFT OVERLAP

BostonSal

Recommended Posts

I hope that I haven't asked this before, but if I have, I must not have gotten any replies.

I like to have,

and as far back as I can remember,

always have had at least one lofted fairway wood and one long iron overlap in lofts.

This may be much less common today in the hybrid era,

with hybrids replacing both long irons and high loft fairway woods,

but I don't presently hit hybrids.

It's just how I play.  I like a long iron that I can hit on nasty driving holes.

I like a fairway wood that gets the ball high in the air in a hurry.

And that means a loft overlap.

I can do it either with wide wedge gapping at the bottom of the set,

or,

I can do it with a fifteen club cart bag as I'm just playing weekday morning golf with my friends.

I've mentioned in it many threads, but never, unless I've forgtton, made it the subject of thread..

I'm just curious if anybody else on the forum does it.

I apologize.

It wasn't even that long ago.

I guess I'll have to give myself a time out!

Sometimes I carry a 4i and a 23* hybrid that overlap distances but they have very different ball flights.  The 4i I can hit a low stinger and the hybrid I can't hit anything but moon shots, both end up the same distance.  Mid summer with hard greens I'll play the 23* a lot more;  In windy conditions I'll hit the 4i more.

I seem to recall that other thread but don’t remember if I answered. I did at one time because the course that I played at required different types of tee shots so I carried two drivers, 4 wood, 7 wood, 4 iron on down - I could hit one of the drivers off the deck.

For wedges I had Ping Eye 2 W, Eye 2 S and some sort of 60.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Both clubs may not be the same length, ball flights different, or different shot types. Hitting a hybrid out of the thick rough isn’t something I am good at so I like to use my longer irons if necessary

I think it's a little more normal than you think. There's only a 1.5* difference between my "3W" and Hybrid. I have a Titleist 917 set at 16.5 and an 18 Adams. There's about a 20-25 yard difference between the clubs.

  • 2 weeks later...

was playing a 7 wood and a 4i that were 1 degree apart, but with a 25 yard gap difference. Just put in a 23 degree hybrid to see if I can adjust that gapping and get a more consistent 210 club. This new hybrid will be only 1 degree apart from my 5 iron, but will (hopefully) gap about 15 yards. Loft number doesn’t matter, the shot and gappings do.
