Do you putt with the glove on or off?

Javs

Recommended Posts

I putt, chip and pitch with my glove off. I also take it off between shots. Putting on my glove before a tee or iron shot is my trigger for my pre-shot routine. Get the distance, see the shot I want. Then on goes the glove, quiet my mind and step in and hit the shot. I rarely take a full practice swing.

Glove off for chipping and putting.  Do not take it off between shots, though I usually release the fastener, especially in warmer weather.

But maybe I need to follow @Javs if it would help shave a few more strokes 😁

My routine is very similar (no glove for pitching, chipping, putting or greenside bunker shots). However, I do not remove my glove between full shots.  I do not generally take a full practice swing, just a partial backswing to get a feel for the correct face and clubhead position halfway into the backswing, so that I am not "fanning the face open" in my takeaway.

Glove comes off between every shot 95% of the time but I wear a glove for everything but putting.  Putting is gloveless.  I will on occasion chip without a glove but its finesse shots greenside.

Depends on the temperature. Colder weather glove stays on all round. Warm weather glove comes off between shots to keep the glove as dry as possible. I’ll rotate gloves if needed. Putting is glove off unless it’s cold.

Glove on until I get to finesse game.  Chips/pitches/greenside bunkers are probably a 50/50 thing with glove on or off.   Putting the glove is always off.   Put the glove back on when I pull club for next tee shot.

Funny how many "low" handicappers take our gloves off around the green. I definitely like to have the feel without the glove for putting and shipping, no need to keep from slipping when it is a finesse stroke.

Yeah... I ALWAYS take a full practice swing.  That way, when my real swing turns to 💩 during the stroke, I can still say I had one full, good attempt at a golf swing, at some point during that shot 🤣

This is easy...I don't wear a glove putting, mostly because I don't wear a glove at all.  For some reason, I've never felt comfortable wearing a glove.  That's a bit strange given I live in a high temperature/high humidity environment.

Looking at the number of shots I take, which clubs and are the shots "glove worthy", I find that less than half (46%) would require a glove (if I wore one).   Of that 46%, two thirds are driver, 3 wood and five wood.  Only 8-12 shot a round require my irons.

The balance of 54% are my wedges and putter.  Roughly half of those is my 50- and 55-degree wedges and the balance is my pitching wedge and putter.

Even if I wore a glove, it wouldn't be used very often.  So, I save by not having to purchase one of those common golf consumables.

Same.  I haven't worn a glove in many years.  I keep trying periodically; I even thought it would help to wear winter golf gloves to keep my hands warm, but with old age comes poor circulation, and my fingers are actually colder with gloves on.

I used to wear a glove and when I did, I would not take it off to putt.  Looked awful with a tan to have a white left hand.  😆  I tried taking it off to chip and putt, but then I would forget to put it back on until several holes later.  I also decided that I didn't have full control of the club with something between my skin and the grip, at least that's what I believed.  Besides Freddie doesn't wear one!!

This is an interesting question as I wear my glove from start to finish for every swing and putt. I have tried taking it off between swings and when I chip and putt, but keeping that glove on just seems more natural to me. If during the heat and humidity of summer when the glove gets drenched, I will switch to another glove as needed. I guess this is a habit I retained from my baseball playing days.

I keep mine on for each game, but I open the velcro fastener for putting, as I find it increases the feel of the putter head during the putting stroke.

During the summer months, I wear a glove for tee shots and iron shots but no glove around the green or for putting. I also tend to take it off between shots to keep my hand from over heating. Once it gets below 45° or so I tend to leave it on for everything except putting.

Putt glove off, and all shots <50yds.

I also try to remember to take my glove off between shots, but this is mostly about keeping my gloves dry as I have sweaty hands. If it’s really cold or raining, I’ll wear a pair of rain gloves for everything.

Never putt with the glove on. Never chip/pitch with glove on either. Need to "feel" the shot. Always take the glove off between full swings. Also, rarely if ever, take a full practice swing - maybe a partial motion at most but never full practice swing. I take too many full swings as it is. Baaahahaha.

I always leave my glove on. I’ve tried putting glove off but didn’t really sense a difference. Perhaps I’m not a “feels” player. I take a pretty analytical approach to things. So I’m not sure how much I’d benefit from putting with a glove on or off

Glove off for putting 100% all the time. I hate the feeling of my glove on. It was probably engrained in me from High School gold days seeing other juniors doing it but by now I cannot stand wearing it while putting. I will say though, however, that where I tend to be indifferent is when I am chipping. For me, I find that I am either/or when it comes to gloves on for chipping. Guess it is just kind of a how I feel that day kind of feeling. Now, something I have noticed is that when I do as @Javs does when it comes to taking the glove off more my gloves last longer. Is that something to test? Maybe, but for me, I do notice a difference. The biggest being that it seems like less sweat seems to be soaked up and in so doing the glove stays a little more fresh. Just my thoughts haha.

Glove is on for everything except putting and short chips. I know leaving it on was more popular back in the days of Jack and Arnie but it seemed to be more of a thing in the 80s to put without. I’m definitely more of a “feel” player so that’s the only reason I take it off around the green. I’ve never read anything to show a statistical difference with it on or off.

I take my glove off to putt when it’s hot, but not for “feel” like pros do, I’m just trying to dry my glove off whenever I can. I also rotate between two gloves some times in summer, again to have a dry glove. I leave it on when it’s cool/cold season, even wear winter gloves on both hands when it’s really cold.

Depends on the temperature. Colder weather glove stays on all round. Warm weather glove comes off between shots to keep the glove as dry as possible. I’ll rotate gloves if needed. Putting is glove off unless it’s cold.

This is the same for me. The glove is not part of my routine so keeping it on/off is weather dependent. If it's cold and windy I'll keep a glove on each hand the whole round, even putting. Having two gloves on takes a few shots to get used to. On nice weather days, I'll take my glove off between each shot and not use it on greenside pitches/chips or putts.

A while back I saw a video of Kyle Berkshire (long drive maniac) and he took his glove off for any iron shot that isn't a full swing. I've never tried it, but it intrigued me at the time.

I agree that taking the glove off between shots makes them last longer. Especially, in the Texas summer heat.
