DIY shaft pullers

Recommended Posts

Okay, here is my quandry:

  • I have a growing interest in testing different shafts with different heads - this is new for me but growing
  • I have a strong aversion to paying someone else to have a shaft pulled + travelling to the shop to get it done
  • I have a strong desire to do more DIY projects
  • I have limited tooling experience and little access to tools

So, what I want to do is build a shaft puller/extractor (to be used on graphite as well as steel). What I'd like to know is what you guys use, whether you built your own, any pictures/directions/recommendations you have (threaded extractor vs hydraulic, etc etc etc) and whether it is actually worthwhile going the DIY route.

If your recommendation is not to go DIY, what shaft extractor do you currently use, and what works well / what would you change on it?

The thread jaskanski linked was one I was going to go look for, i've seen a couple other as well.  Search youtube and you will find some good video's on DIY shaft pullers.

All that said I'm going to buy one.  Well I'm going to ask for one for my birthday (it's in 3 weeks so should be soon).  I'm all for the DIY projects, but the last thing i want to do is screw up a $300 shaft so in my mind it's worth the added cost of getting something that works well.

This is a thread were i asked for advice on pullers over on WRX, got some good answers and I'm leaning towards the golfworks.com one if they do the 20% off tools again.  That or the Mitchell that's around $200.

This is the upgraded version of the one I have and it's awesome. I prefer the hydraulic puller because I feel you can use a lower heat. Only because you can apply pressure and as soon as the epoxy starts to break down it pops off. So there is less of a chance of ruining a shaft.

I use whichever one is the most expensive on golfworks, thank you 20% off coupon. I had waited four months from mitchell when they told me it'd be another three I told them to go pound sand.

I'm of the opinion that if you screw up one $200+ shaft because you didn't want to spend $200 on the proper tools and went the diy route then you're an idiot. But if you don't and your machine works, I'm the idiot. I can live with that.

  • 3 weeks later...

I ultimately decided to go the route of the Tutelman shaft puller - http://www.tutelman.com/golf/measure/shaftPuller.php - it looks pretty straight forward, so I'll let you know how I get on.

The first lot of supplies for my shaft extractor arrived last night:

  • drill vise
  • pulley puller
  • hosel protector
  • club shield paste

I need to get some bracket and a couple of bolts tonight and I should be able to finish this over the weekend
