rotating side planks

have been trying to change my workout routine and trying different exercises.

I use the following book and it is awesome. I highly recommend it

one new exercise I am trying is a rotating side plank. the purpose of this exercise is to strenghten the oblique muscle group and shoulders to help strenghten the muscles that improve stability.

 

wow. do 3 sets of 10 per side. you really feel it in the oblique muscles.

 

basically be in a plank position. then put your hand on your head and use the oblique muscles and sholder to rotate the torso and hips and shoulders.

Squat, bench and deadlift

 

Correct. I would add standing military press, but I can't disagree with this. Full body compound movements.

 

The most potent core exercise is anything that requires you to stabilize weight above the shoulders.

 

These exercises, while intimidating at first, really help with longevity too.

I do squays and lateral bounding exercise.

I use bands for isometric and plyometric movements. Make a good anchor point and hold the bands waist height and rotate with different resistance. About 30 bursts and I can feel it. I usually like to go play after I do that too, swing speed booster.

This is a great exercise. Another variation on this. To strengthen the back - regular sets at normal speed.

Overhead squat is probably the absolute best, but it isn't exactly an exercise an inexperienced person can do.

 

Standing military press, lunges with a weight held overhead. Think about how hard your core needs to work when you have a weight extended overhead—it creates a lot of leverage on your trunk. The key is you can't shy away from heavy things.

 

grab something heavy from the ground and lift it over your head onto a shelf. Do that 20 times each side. Grab a kettle bell and hold it extended overhead—push your shoulder into your ear—then walk around, lunge around, sit up and down in a chair, etc.

The first time or two it's a little tough to get down but after than it's easier to perform but it will kick your butt
