Popular Post revkev
I truly appreciate all of the support - I thought I'd take advantage of a teachable moment here because we've seen a few comments on testing. Please understand that I have had to deal with trying to keep people as safe as possible since early March when Pastors received a letter from the Surgeon General encouraging us to be leaders in helping our people be good citizens during a time of pandemic. Additionally our school was required to submit a safety plan for approval by the State before we were allowed to reopen. I'm not a doctor but I have taken my role seriously, studied the data particularly in the narrative forms released by the CDC and local health authorities, our safety plan wasn't just accepted but commended as exemplary by health officials. So here's what I know based on the current data, about a virus that is highly contagious and particularly dangerous to a vulnerable group of people. Many of us have regular contact with those folks and some of us are those folks. We've had two of our beloved active forum members get very sick from it so please take this to heart if you are reading it. Testing - always consult your doctor before you test - what you think may be symptoms, may be but they may not be - once you go for a test you should be self quarantined until you receive the results. A test after an exposure is worthless if it's done prior to day 6 even if you are experiencing symptoms - the test lags behind the incubation period by a bit. That means that if you develop COVID or test positive you were contagious 48 hours before your symptoms emerged. Rapid tests are next to worthless. The health department in our state will not accept a negative from a rapid test as a passport back to the work place. Since you have to wait 6 days after exposure to get a valid test and the results will take at least 3 days to come back you are going to be quarantined for a minimum of 10 days if you are exposed regardless of what you do. I'm not intending to test from my exposure - I'm just doing my 10 days and holding my breath - why risk another exposure going for a test at this point - I either will get COVID or I won't. If I do, I'll know it and a new timeline will emerge - 72 hours after my symptoms abate. If you have had COVID there is no reason to get retested afterwards unless your employer or some other agency requires it. (which is ignorant at this point because people may continue to test positive for up to 90 days after contracting COVID) If you had symptoms the CDC and most health departments will allow you back to work 72 hours after they abate. You are no longer contagious at that point. If you go for a retest and test positive your 10 day clock restarts at that point, Again you should consult your doctor if you have questions. A negative test only means you didn't have COVID when you tested - it doesn't mean you won't get it or even that you don't have it as you're reading the results. The incubation period is 2-14 days after exposure. 5-7 days is the normal with 5.1 days being the median time for symptoms to develop - I'm almost done with day 5 and remain symptom free. Over 90 percent of cases occur between days 2 to 7. Exposure is being in close contact with a person who has COVID for over 15 minutes. In my case I was in the same living room as someone who tested positive the next day (inside the 48 hour contagious window) for nearly an hour. She was unmasked, I was both masked and unmasked at times. I was masked with gloves on during the only time that we were within 6 feet of one another - while giving her communion. That was considered exposure because of the length of time. I consulted the health department with the particularities of that encounter and they confirmed what I thought. You can always consult your local health department if you are concerned that you have been exposed. I hope this helps bring some understanding - I know that COVID has at times been controversial, at least in the US. Have some used its circumstance to their advantage? I'm sure, yes. Have some even twisted statistics to push their agenda - more than likely. But regardless it is real, people die from it and some will experience yet to be determined life long effects from having it. Be careful, stay safe and listen to your local health officials. revkev
As an update I'm now on day 8 of my quarantine and have no symptoms. Sadly the woman whom I was visiting when I was exposed passed away on Sunday morning. Her daughter has almost fully recovered from her symptoms other than the lack of taste thing. To illustrate the possibility of this being very serious for someone without pre-existing conditions a friend of mine has had COVID since early January. It started as a mild case but as his outward symptoms were receding he felt weird. I turned out he had a collapsed lung. He recovered from that and just as he was cleared to go back to work this week he felt weird again last night. His lung collapsed again. This is a guy in his early 50's who is in other wise great shape. Be careful, not just the mask, keep your distance, wash your hands frequently, all that common sense sort of stuff that all of us should adopt. Popular Post revkev
Sorry that I did not update post surgery and truly appreciate the thoughts and prayers - very difficult and huge (for COVID) funeral this weekend - close family friend as well as a parishioner I went on my COVID quarantine bringing her Holy Communion for the last time (her daughter tested positive the next day - I never got it, daughter only had minor symptoms for a few days, son tested positive but never had symptoms. At any rate, as suspected the surgery was more complicated for Penny than most. The doctor looked like she went 15 rounds with Marvin Hagler when she came to speak to me but it went fine. Penny is home, recovery for quickly, she even made it to the funeral. The doc told me that had this been her first surgery, she might have never done another one - it took her 20 minutes to find the gall bladder because Penny's body now treats the tubing from her shunt as if it is another organ - that means her entire abdominal anatomy has shifted around and nothing is where it's supposed to me.
