Here are my 2023 goals

1. #Lose23in23 - clocked in at 222 lbs on 1/1/23
2. Be present and enjoy the rounds/company
3. Swing it like Nelly - I have a tendency to take too hard of a swing. I play better when it's a smooth 80-90% swing
4. Lower Scoring Average - finished 2022 with a 18 hole average of 81 (it was a rough start to the season)
5. Break 70 - broke par for the first time in 2022
6. Birdie every hole at the home course - got 17/18 in 2022
7. Hole in One - still looking for that first ace

I was just typing up a new 2023 goal thread this morning.  You beat me to it!

My main goals are as follows:

1. Get into the best shape of my life.  I'm not looking for a specific weight or strength benchmark; I'm focused on quality of life and being able to do anything reasonable without pain or limitations.  I couldn't lift anything heavier than 10lbs for 8 weeks in October and November after donating a kidney to my father (he's doing great now).  Being limited like that really shows how important taking care of yourself and your body is.

2. Pass the Certified Internal Auditor exam.  I've been doing a form of auditing for the last 15-20 years, but just last year took a role in internal auditing where the CIA exam finally makes sense.

3. Enjoy every round of golf.  I know I'll have some great rounds and some absolute sh#t shows out there, but I'm going to try to enjoy at least one thing from every round.

4. Be more active in the MGS forum.  I didn't post a ton last year but hope to get back into it more again this year.

Primarily I am going to keep up with the commitment I made last year, which I succeeded  at 100%. and that was to not let anything about this game upset me, and just enjoy the time with my two older brothers who play with me(I walked off after 9 in early 2021).    After some really bad holes this past year 10 on a par 5, and more than a few really bad quads on simple little par 4's, and some other brain fart bad decisions, I did it all with a smile on my face.  Some of you older people may get the reference.  In the words of Bill Murray from "Meatballs".   "IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!!"

Specifically game wise I am gong to keep working with my putting green. Thanks MGS for the Birdie Ball Putting Green test!!    16 more 1 putts from 0-8' in 2022, 17 more 1 putts from 9-14'.  Total of 33 more 1 putts 0-14' (6%).   So I'm hoping to increase 1 putts under 14' again for 2023, and also hopefully continue to  reduce 3 putts over 16'. Practice reduced it from 27.3% in 2021 to 23.2 % in 2022.  Hope to get it under 20 % for 2023!

1. Get back into the gym at least 3 times per week. Before the pandemic, I averaged 4-5 times per week but I am way busier with work and family now. I reactivated my membership today. The pandemic hiatus is over!

2. Play more golf. Doesn’t have to be good golf, just golf.

3. Play golf slower. I have a tendency to play way too fast. When carrying my bag, I have been known to start running after a ball when it’s still in the air. I still want to play fast, but I’ve noticed my best rounds come when the group ahead of me forces me to slow down a little.

I sure hope that I come closer to 2023 goals than I did in 2022.....

2022 Goals:

Play more golf. -  I only recorded 65 rounds last year.  I want to play over 100 this year. Hoping I can get there.    NOPE

Win more $ than I spend in entry fees. - NOPE

improve short game. - SG from 100 and in was abysmal last year.  Difficult to quantify. I feel more confident, but scores did not reflect improvement.

Reduce the # of rounds with a Double or worse. Would like to get this number down to 20% or less. HAHAHAHAHAHA   No.

Make more Birdies. - Averaged 3.2 per competitive round last year.  Would like to average 4+   - Nope

By all metrics, 2022 was the worst year of golf I have played in the last 20.  Scoring average was up, fairways missed was up, lost balls were up, blood pressure was up, and total number of wedges broken on the course was at an all time high..   There is hope, I think.  I have never putted better. I still hit it as far as I need to in order to be competitive in the events that I play.  I just need to clean up some thinking errors and address the root causes of my bad play.   So, here are my 2023 goals for golf:

  1. Practice more, play less.  I need to treat golf practice just like I would treat any other athletic endeavor that I have ever done.  Practice with Purpose. I am writing a schedule for practice and planning around my events for this year.
  2. Stretch.  A lot.  I have become quite stiff and inflexible in my old age.  It becomes an issue late in rounds, or on the second or third day of a multi day event.. I just stiffen up and cannot swing the club.
  3. Win a Chapter event.    1+2 = 3
  4. Play more rounds with different people.  I have almost never met someone on the golf course that I didn't enjoy.

GL me.

hahahaha as for golf goals...

» hit confidently off the tee and get the ball into play;

» hit the rest of the shots within a reasonable proximity of intended targets;

» regularly score in the 80s (gross).

You can come play at my course anytime!  A few people I regularly play with think that 4:30-5:00 for a round is fast even when no one is in front of them.

I have to say my goals are pretty simple for 2023.

1. Continue to have fun each round no matter what. (Easier said than done but that's why it is a goal)

2. Continue to keep walking at least 9 of the holes I play.

3. Break 80 at least 20% of the rounds I play.

Actually a good goal that I can also relate to!

So another goal I'll add for myself is to play at a nice, steady pace .. walking, even talking, getting ready for the next shot and .. most importantly .. executing each shot.

1)Break 70- shot 70 a few times this year and had a few more under par rounds, now I need to improve my putting/approach play to break into the 60’s

2) get down to a scratch handicap: finished ‘22 as a .6 - If I improve my putting and approach I should get there.

3)Continue thinking about course management and not thinking about my actual swing on the course.

4) Not worry about my score when I play with my wife: just enjoy the fact I found a gal who likes me enough to go golfing with me.

Only item on the agenda is checking out a grip change for greenside only work, using Claude Harmon Sr's grip- which was a baseball grip with lead hand thumb off shaft hold with interlock fingers too.    Getting some arthritis in the lead thumb, not bad, but I can tell it's there so planning a few years ahead by maybe by taking some strain off now it if not needed.  Won't be too difficult to trap it but will certainly feel weird at first.

I'm trying to keep my goals for the year simple.

1) Better practice. For me that's going to mean a lot less time taking full swings and a lot more time on the putting green and around the short game area.
2) Regulate my expectations on the course. Even though I know what shots I am capable of, I need to do a better job of understanding what is reasonable to expect instead of getting upset about anything less than perfect.
3) Keep working on flexibility and mobility. More of a quality of life goal, but it also translates to golf because my left hip tends to catch in the swing, so I have to keep working on it so that it doesn't become a limiting factor.
4) Try to play at least 15 different courses this year. There are only really 3 courses within about a half hour of me, but with work travel and more courses about an hour away, I want to start experiencing more courses instead of playing the same one repeatedly. Funny thing is 15 different courses would be more rounds than I played all of last year, so this one might be difficult.

I need to find a way to fit in golf and lifting weights.  I really like to golf and will choose it every chance I get, but I need to lift.  It keeps me healthy and is a huge mental boost.  With work/life/family obligations, non-golf exercise fell by the wayside the past few summers.

Play bogey golf consistently and break 85.  Last year I wanted to shoot low 90s and break 90.  Both were achieved and hoping to continue the progress.

I thought about starting a separate thread, but this thread seems to be a better place to update the progress on our respective goals. I’ll go first. I quoted my original post for reference.

1. Go to the gym—I’ve been getting to the gym consistently at least twice a week. Not the three I’m shooting for, but I’ll get there. Mostly been focusing on getting my muscles and joints used to weight lifting again with kettlebells and dumbbells before hitting the barbell. I don’t have a set workout plan, I just try to hit every major muscle group at least once a week and throw in some cardio and stretching. Stretching and mobility is key.

2. Play more golf—It’s still winter and the courses are closed. But the one simulator session I’ve gotten in is more than last year at this time.

3. Play golf slower—Mostly just thinking of a plan I can execute on the course to make sure I’m not rushing things.

It’s slow progress, but progress nonetheless.

How is everyone else doing?

Along with the general play better type goals which I'll go more into and have in my state of play thread. I want to play 4 new courses. It's simple, but variety is important and fun so hoping this will happen!

I’ve never established a true handicap before, just an estimated one based on my scores. So establishing a handicap and then lowering it, even if it’s not a significant number.

Not getting frustrated with poor shots, etc., because my soon to be 6 year old will be playing lots of golf with me and I want to set a good example of behavior for him.

If I can improve one specific thing in my game, it will be consistency off the tee as that was really poor for me last year. Looking forward to 2023!

Have given this some thought since initial posting:

1) My over arching simple goal is the same….keep the ball in play. For me this is going to be taking less risks. I always penalize myself when I realistically I know I should not be trying to accomplish a certain shot. “”Usually it’s “I don’t need driver on this hole” and then I take driver or “I can reach the green in 2” and there is water and other issues in range.

2) Sign up for the VGA. There are several tournaments locally that I’ll be able to play and one that’s close by that I play all the time. I just keep talking myself out of it and I shouldn’t be doing that.

3) Play new courses when on vacation. Going to Maine (few courses there I have not played but have played most in the area where we go.) and then in Disney and North Carolina where my Memere is.

4) More rounds with my son. I asked him the other day if he wanted to do golf camp again or play more rounds together. He chose more rounds. He enjoys just being on the course, not that he didn’t like the camps but he just wants to be on the course learning.

I'm happy to say I met my golfing goals in 2022, which were:

- Play more golf, and enjoy it.

- Begin to practice golf with a purpose, trying to improve, rather than just whacking balls around.

- Break 95.

- Finally upgrade ALL of my golf gear.

Now that all that is out of the way, my 2023 goals are:

- Break 90.

- Figure out my driver and get comfortable/more confident with it off the tee.

- Play golf at least once per week.

- Better course management to avoid quads.

- 3 putt a maximum of twice per round, or once per 9 holes.

Try to play 60 rounds or more.   Last year was 55 and I hung the clubs up a little early, also a rough spring getting out of the blocks.

I'd like my sand save % to fall between 45 and 50%,  fairways above 50% and greens above 55%

Just picked up a new set of T100 irons so getting used to those will be key - can't wait

Likely going to take out my 3 wood and try to use the 3 hybrid more often for placement

Try to practice more, specifically around the greens with chipping and putting

I broke par on 7 individual nines but only one 18 round.  I'd like to get that full round number above 3 this season.

I’ve been so busy with work and teenage daughters 😳😳👯‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️, my game has been…neglected. Get out once a month or so, either shoot 75 or 82 depending on short game and putting. But for the last 4 months I’ve made time, built an area in my third bay of my garage, bought a used GC3, a Rapsodo (for when I go to the range, and down the line video with my iPad), net, mat, 70” Samsung from my neighbors yard sale and set out to get back to scratch. My biggest areas of concern were poor posture and everything that comes with that, most notably, the dreaded “EARLY RELEASE!” Hitting a minimum of 100 balls every other night, with few swing thoughts other than posture and picturing my butt up against a plane of glass. I have made so much progress, my best friend and playing partner said “holy s***, that looked like you 15 years ago!” on the first tee on Sunday. Shot 73 on a really tough track (Wigwam Gold Course). Sorry for the long winded answer!
